Chemistry Essay: Impact of the use of chemical reactions on the efficiency of a car In this essay I will explore two chemical reactions and how they impact the efficiency of a car. I have chosen to talk about airbags, and nitrous oxide. I will explain how they work, how they enhance a car and talk about how the implication of science has solved everyday problems of a car. Lastly I will talk about what affect these chemical reactions have on the environment. Nitrous oxide is a molecule made through chemical bonding. It is made when two nitrogen atoms are bonded to an oxygen atom; YouTube, (2009). And it has the formula N2O. Nitrous oxide is a non flammable and colorless gas. It is also sometimes called NOS or just nitrous; Wikipedia, (2015). …show more content…
Sodium azide (NaN3) decomposes at 300oC which produces sodium (Na) and nitrogen gas (N2). The nitrogen that is generated then fills the airbag. The purpose of the KNO3 and SiO2 is to remove the sodium (N2) which is highly explosive and dangerous metao, by converting it to a harmless material. Secondly, the sodium reacts with potassium nitrate (KNO3) to produce potassium oxide (K2O), sodium oxide (Na2O), and additional nitrogen gas. The N2 generated in this second reaction also fills the airbag, and the metal oxides react with silicon dioxide (SiO2) in a final reaction to produce silicate glass, which is harmless and stable; Chemistry.wustl.edu, (2000). The nitrogen gas inflates the bag at around …show more content…
Well chemicals in both of these reactions can be extremely harmful and dangerous. Firstly, nitrous oxide is actually a greenhouse gas meaning it contributes to the cause of global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer. When the chemical is used in cars, sometimes the chemical can escape the engine or the tank causing it to go into our atmosphere. Nitrous oxide is over 300 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2. and accounts for 5% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities and 6.3% in the UK; The Conversation, (2015) and Www3.epa.gov, (2015). Secondly, sodium azide a chemical found in airbags, is a highly toxic and poisonous compound. The presence of the compound is a threat to humans and the environment. Only a few grams could kill a person if ingested. Also sodium azide can kill and degrade the seeds of many plants as well as sterilizing soil, killing soil bacteria and fungi; Isaacs, T and Sdearthtimes.com,
Tyler White CHEM151LL 32658 04/01/2018 Different Types Chemical Reaction Types and Equations Purpose: The purpose of this lab experiment is to examine different types of chemical reactions such as Decomposition reaction, Synthesis reactions, Combustion reactions, and different Chemical equations. The experiments were conducted online using Late Nite Labs. Materials: Because the experiments were conducted online there wasn’t any physical use of materials, only digital ones, for these labs to be performed. Only the registration for the website was needed to perform these online labs, as well as a desktop computer.
Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to identify given Unknown White Compound by conducting various test and learning how to use lab techniques. Tests that are used during this experiment were a flame test, ion test, pH test, and conductivity test. The results drawn from these tests confirmed the identity of the Unknown White Compound to be sodium acetate (NaC2H3O2) because there were no presence of ions and sodium has a strong persistent orange color. The compound then will be synthesized with the compounds Na2CO3 and HC2H3O2 to find percent yield.
The principal at Riverwood High School recently proposes that all school bus drivers shut off their bus engines while waiting for students to board buses in the school parking lot or whenever buses are parked for several minutes. As the bus drivers turn on the engine, whether while waiting for the students or delivering students from home to school and vice versa, several gasses are produced such as carbon dioxide (CO2) that are emitted from the vehicle into the atmosphere. As CO2 in the atmosphere increases, more heat is trap in the atmosphere which contribute to the climate change. In addition, carbon monoxide (CO) have contributed into polluting the atmosphere while the bus are idling. CO are a poisonous gas that are odorless and colorless.
Transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another. The invention of the car was a revolutionary breakthrough in the history, along with the invention of ships, planes, trains, buses and subways. For over a hundred of years, since the invention of the first car, cars have been manufactured with differences in design, appearance, and performance, all with the intent of improving transportation. This generation, more than ever, demanding manufacturers to keep up with the fast pace of life; to get more knowledge of cars, such as muscle, hybrid, and electric cars, one should further look into the history and progressions that have been made thus far with the three types of models. The electric car has made
Just as the computer and music industries changed their products to advance technology and improve portability, the implementation of the catalytic converter, during the 1970s, sought to provide a cleaner, more environmentally friendly way to reduce hazardous auto emissions. A catalytic converter converts toxic auto pollutants in the exhaust gas to less toxic levels of pollutants
Lab Report Experiment 6 Rates of Chemical Reactions By Nikhola Mirashirova Lab Partner: Dina Abetova Section 3, Saturday October 31, 2015 Introduction Rate reaction is the measure of the change in concentration of the reactants or the change in concentration of the products per unit time.1,2 Rate law for this experiment: Rate = k(I-)m(BrO3-)n(H+)p There are several factors which affect the rate of reaction: catalyst, reactant concentration, and temperature.1,2 A catalyst is a substance that changes, increases or decreases, the rate of a chemical reaction but is not being used up during the reaction.3 It provides an alternative way, so that the rate of reaction changes.4 Catalyst, which is used in this experiment, is (NH4)2MoO (0.5 M).
“Why Electric Cars are the Future” Introduction Attention Getter: It was Sunday at park, two college students were discussing about cars. One of them said that imagine about two decades ago, it appeared there was no effective alternative to the gasoline and oil, but now there is a better, cleaner, and more effective substitute to them: electricity. Although electric engines are not so widespread, more and more people consider changing their gasoline-fueled vehicles to electric cars. Then I discovered why electric cars are the future.
Many laws, and restrictions have been passed over the last few decades, restricting manufactures to specific requirements for their emissions, vehicles in general, and even the gasoline that they run on, with requirements for detergents and such,. Unfortunately, it is claimed that these systems don’t have big enough impact on lowering the environmental problem, due to the amount of vehicles out there. Luckily, since electric vehicles are becoming more affordable, practical, and appealing, the amount of problems associated with the amount of claimed pollution will
The advancement of automobiles over time has directly affected the advancement of society as a whole. Society relies intensely and increasing on private motorized transport, vehicles are expected to become safer, more luxurious and powerful. These expectation, however do not take into account of the ensuring consequences such as greater emissions of air pollutants and greater exposure of people to hazardous pollution that causes serious health problems. All the evidence points to the magnitude of these adverse effects on health and to the need to identify solutions that both reduce risks to health and meet the requirement for mobility. This creates a major challenge to the governments, public health organizations, environment authorities and most importantly to the design engineers.
The process of food decaying and break down of sewage wastes, results in the release of carbon and methane. Also, fertilizers used for farming release nitrous
I feel concerned that anthropogenic activities have damaged the atmosphere which has led to severe detrimental effects over time. Studying Chemistry enabled me to learn the science behind global warming and the consequences for it. This made me think, what current technology could be further utilised to reduce greenhouse gas emission to the atmosphere? Due to this, I want to talk about electric vehicles as I feel that electric cars are the future of humankind. I will persuade you to leave behind the poisonous, toxic, filthy fumes of your present vehicle and switch to an electric car.
Good Afternoon Everyone “The best solution to pollution is dilution”. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s’ report of 2010 Transportation contributes 13% to the global greenhouse gas emissions. So, have you ever thought of diluting the emissions by switching to Hybrid Vehicles? You may be thinking that Hybrid Vehicles are modern inventions due to technological advancements but did you know that it existed prior to the invention of the conventional gasoline vehicles.
Introduction: Internal combustion engines play a dominant role in transportation and energy production. Even a slight improvement will translate into considerable reductions in pollutant emissions and impact on the environment. The two major types of internal combustion engines are the Otto and the Diesel engine. The former relies on an ignition source to start combustion, the latter works in auto ignition mode.
but it’s hard to make it happen and make everyone to use it because it run slower and few distance than normal car. Now a day fuel is more expensive and most making carbon dioxide in human activity [ 1] and electric car is developed enough to run on the road like normal car that we can see on the road. Thesis Statement: The Electric car have several features that make it as the future of every car. Body1 Topic sentence: Electric car did not make pollution. Support idea: zero pollution Support detail: It use electrical energy instead of fuel that not making carbon dioxide to the air or any pollution to the nature.
In fact, nitrous oxide, which is a by product of nitrogen, is the third most significant greenhouse gas, after carbon dioxide and methane. Consequently, you can well imagine as to how harmful is the use of fertilizers for our environment and the ongoing use of fertilizers across the world
