The movie Psycho by the Oscar nominated and "master of suspense" Alfred Hitchcock is by far the best suspense/thriller movie that I have ever seen. It is amazing how a movie filmed in 1960 in black and white can turn out to be better than a movie filmed with color in the twenty first century. How Alfred Hitchcock thought of ways to create suspense and infused them in the movie is truly amazing. The techniques that I saw Alfred Hitchcock use to create suspense in Psycho were different camera shots and angles, creepy music, jump scares, and foreshadowing. The different camera shots and angles that Alfred Hitchcock used were the principal techniques that created suspense. The different camera shots and angles let us see things that we would not
hurt with Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray in the comedy Caddyshack, and see life from the eyes of mob henchmen, Tom Hanks, in the crime and gangster film Road to Perdition. American cinema has used Alfred Hitchcock to create fear for many years like it was displayed in the horror film Psycho, has allowed us to sing in dance with the cast in the musical Chicago, and check out, momentarily, from reality in many science fiction films. American cinema has taken us back in time as we rode horse-back with our western heroes John Wayne and Clint Eastwood or put on the badge with the brothers of the law in Tombstone. Some of the greatest impacts from the world of cinema have been from films that covered war.

Three sensory details that he used, is when we notice a cop following Marion, we see that Norman is stalking Marion, and when a shadowy figure shows up while Marion is taking a shower. The first sensory detail that creates suspense is when we see the cop following Marion. We believe that the cop recognizes something is up furthermore, is going to assert Marion for stealing the money.

When Scottie was first introduced to the job Gavin offers him, he was told that Madeleine was possessed by a spirit. The reason being was so Gavin’s elaborate plan of killing his wife had a reason to end with her suicide. Although this was the direct reason for the use of ghosts I also think it was used so the audience realises that supernatural ideas are going to be used in the film, and this was a way to ease into it without it being cheesy.

The plot is elaborate and intriguing and the cinematography is legendary. On top of this, the characters, like good characters should, all have their own needs and wants that are evident in the film. The needs of these characters affect each other and they affect the story and they all follow one common theme: control. Our protagonist, John “Scottie” Ferguson’s wants and needs differ greatly throughout the film, but his only constant is his yearning to get over his acrophobia, or fear of heights.
The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.

Basic Instinct by Paul Verhoeven is a sexual thriller, which exploring the ideas of femme fatale women, power games and manipulation between woman and man. This is not a movie driven by its moral lessons; this is a movie about wanting the multimillion-dollar mansion of a murderess. The women in Basic Instinct kill in order to fight against restraints put on them by their families and society. The movie features three women, who in one form or another, have this as their killing aim in Basic Instinct, women kill in acts of rage directed specifically against men and the family.
After watching The 39 Steps (1935), I realized that Alfred Hitchcock really did have a talent for establishing suspense through films. Even though suspense was the primary focus, Hitchcock managed to effectively and intelligently mix humor, romance, and thriller. He uses a variety of techniques to convey these feelings to the audience. According, to some of his interviews with Francois Truffaut, Hitchcock mentions his love for The 39 Steps, specifically about the techniques he uses to create a bewitching experience throughout the film. In this film, he uses a variety of themes that he continued to constantly use throughout his later films.
In the film Rear Window, the director, Alfred Hitchcock uses a variety of techniques to create suspense and leave viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the film. Hitchcock uses a good assortment of tempo to create thoughts in the viewer's mind. He slows down the pace to create anticipation, and speeds it up to show a change in intensity. In the ending scene of Rear Window, Alfred Hitchcock uses changes in pace and tempo, lighting, and a short term deadline to constitute an immense atmosphere of suspense in the viewer's mind.

Made in the 50s, this film revolves around L.B. Jefferies, an adventurous photographer who has broken his leg and is stuck in a wheelchair, watching his neighbours out his apartment window for entertainment. In his last housebound week, Jeff becomes convinced that a murder has taken place in the apartment across from him.
