All The King’s Men
Many readers have and will see Willie Stark as a very ambiguous character from beginning to end in Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men. A firm believer in idealism, Willie Stark has become a very strong, sneaky and persuasive politician known as the Boss. The way Willie Stark changes the way he acts and how he treats people is something that can be very tricky for everyone who reads through this novel. At one moment Willie Stark is once a very kind man who treats others with respect and at the next moment he is blackmailing other individuals in order to have an advantage. In many instances Willie has been seen treating people horribly with no remorse and treating other people like they are gods in the next. Throughout

Willie believes that everyone in this world has dirt and that it is up to him or the people he hires to find out what that dirt is. Willie may be a very bad human at times but he is not a hypocrite, he also sins and Warren does not hide that from the reader. His most grievous sins involve the way he treats his wife Lucy. The spotlight of attention is too much for the Boss and he uses this to fuel his desires sexually, keeping several mistresses during the course of the novel. Lucy becomes the symbol of innocence and simple, country virtues, as Willie sleeps around with no care for how it might affect his marriage personally. He only sees his actions in the way they will appear in his political life. Whatever he can accomplish under the table is fair game. Appearance is much more important than the reality of Willie’s depraved moral state in the political arena. The scene in which the Boss forces a man named Byram to write a letter of resignation because the man would not fawn to Willie is an excellent example of the way Willie uses people for personal gains. The Boss lambastes the man for trying to move up in the world and argues that he is less than human. The Boss is the Boss because no one can rise to his level in his own eyes. He is not corrupt in that he is drawn to …show more content…
The Willie seen in the first chapters cares about the little people of the state. He is disgusted by the corruption of a schoolhouse deal that resulted in children falling from a poorly constructed fire escape. Even when it is up to Willie to sign a deal for the building of his dream hospital, he refuses to strike a deal that will benefit him in a financial way. He would rather leave a legacy with a hospital run by the best doctor in the state, Adam Stanton. Willie rises in the political standings by promising better education and tax reform in his state. He believes this in his heart, and the crowd can see this as well. While the Boss is constantly involved in digging dirt on his opponents, he refuses to use a lie to bust them. The Boss says that the truth is always enough because there is always something. Is it noble that the Boss only accepts the truth? That is the question that the reader is forced to ask. It may be that the truth is more practical in the long run for Willie’s operations. Because Willie sees the world as a rotten and sinful place, he believes that the good must be shaped from the bad. He is the bad, but maybe he can be an instrument of something good in the end. The Willie Stark Hospital is the embodiment of this idea. It is built out of self-interest and through corrupt dealings, but
He was on the way to a bar one night and he got side tracked and changed his mind and decided to go to the liquor store with these two men. When they got to the store an argument between the two men and the storeowner which ended up in a shootout that resulted in the storeowners death. To know more about the novel “A lesson Before Dying“you need to know more about the original story of the Willie Francis case. Willie
Prescott shows the character of Willie by bluntly stating how he transformed and what he became. The power rushed to Stark’s head and turned him into a politic guru. Politics, however, was not in Willie Stark’s
Willy's logical inconsistencies brings confusion towards the audience itself toward the start of the play; in any case, they soon turn into a characteristic of himself. Willy's conflicting conduct is the after effect of his powerlessness to acknowledge reality and his propensity to control or re-make the past trying to get away from the present. For instance, Willy can't leave himself to the way that Biff never again regards him on account of Willy's affair with another woman. As opposed to concede that their relationship is irreparable, Willy retreats to a past time when Biff appreciated and regarded him. As the play goes on, Willy disassociates himself more from the present as his issues turn out to be excessively too much, making them impossible to manage.
Civil disobedience is the refusal to comply with certain laws or a system of laws. In the documents written by Henry Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr they clearly state their terms of just and unjust laws through a majority of appeals to emphasize the efficiency of their main idea on what civil disobedience is. Thoreau highlights his advocacy on civil disobedience in sufficient literal detail while King’s letter to the clergymen uses more examples of ethos and pathos to illuminate his main idea ultimately making his appeal more effective in my opinion. Henry Thoreau believed that the government was being unjust and he proposed the means of justice by using a more dry ethical and emotional appeal to prevail his main idea. In Civil Disobedience,
All good leaders find a tyrant or all tyrants have a good leader stand in their way. King Duncan of Ireland had his life taken away by the following tyrant and former friend Macbeth from Shakespeare’s Macbeth; The young Ralph and the anarchist island lord, Jack from The Lord of the Flies. Many more are known throughout each story, however only a few pose as actual threats to these prime leaders outside their tyrants. Each leader has certain qualities that make them leaders; the identical instance goes for tyrants.
We learn that Willy is a salesman, who is has only had minor success. Willy blames this on the fact that he is not well liked. In the beginning of the play Willy has had a car accident and his wife Linda wants him to ask his boss if he can work only in New York instead of having to travel. When we see Willy in a flashback he appears to be happy and affectionate with his sons, who seem to return the affection.
Willy Loman was a troubled man who didn't have respect for his wife and degraded his children every chance he got when it came to their failures, especially with his son Biff. He only cared about achieving the American dream which he did not succeed because of all his problems that stood in his way. His constant obsession with achieving the American dream only made his family distance themselves from him more only due to the fact that he believed that achieving this would lead him to happiness and success. This also leads to the other major theme which is resilience. Willy came from a poor socioeconomic background and he is making all the efforts to pull himself out of his current situation through whatever he can do in hopes for something better that will make him feel like he's achieved his
No human is perfect so you shouldn’t expect a child to ace everything they do. That’s where Willie’s dad went wrong, he expected too much from him and when he got injured it’s like Willie’s dad’s dreams were ruined. That’s how the family slowly started falling apart, the father and son relationship wasn’t all that good to begin with and now that he’s injured really messed it for the both of
(Garland). I do think that Willie's interactions played a part in shaping him into what he became. Self-Control Theory states that criminality comes from adding together a lack of self-control and opportunity. That could explain why Willie decided to murder the man on the train without a second thought. He simply saw the chance and he took
“Courage is not the absence of fear but the acquired ability to move beyond fear” (-Unknown). Courage is a person who steps up to do something they don’t want to regardless of what other people think of them. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird the novel highlights themes such as, racial injustice, improper judgement, thinking in other perspectives and lots of courageous acts through the use of her many characters. Atticus is a character of courage in a way he steps up to defend an black man,Tom Robinson, in a tough case.
If people know that he's working for Charley, then there will be no denying the fact Charley has done better in life—and Willy's delusional pride just won't allow
Linda defends Willy and insists that Willy, as a traveling salesman, merely exhausts himself rather than become crazy. Even if Willy’s financial reality reveals the fact that he can never come true his American dream, Linda still refuses to break his fantasies and see through his lies. Instead, she supports Willy’s American dream and believes in Willy’s idea that success is possible for anyone. Even though Willy is often rude to her and ignores her opinions, she protects him at all costs. She loves Willy, so she can accept all of his shortcomings.
As Mr Peterson wrote "A helpless victim is never a tragic hero. There's nothing to be learned by watching the deer approach its death; there's an enormous amount to be learned by watching Hamlet bring about his own destruction. " We learn a lot from watching how Willy interacts with his sons, his wife, and how he handles his job. We learn from his mistakes, and his lies. Making Willy a modern tragic hero.
What is it to be good or evil? Truthful versus deceitful? In Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is given a prophecy by three witches that he shall be King and Banquo, his noble friend, shall be the father of kings. Macbeth didn 't like the idea of sharing power and wanted it all to himself. He contemplates killing King Duncan but is forced to commit to it by his wife, Lady Macbeth.
In order to show this, I will analyse two fostering aspects which play a big part in his development and setbacks, these include punishment as well as encouragement. We get to know characters through scenes and descriptions, as well as speech and actions. We get to follow Willies mental state as well as his physical development through these aspects. Willie is the protagonist of the story; he is the main character the plot is addressing. His mother in London is depicted as the antagonist who causes him pain as she believes he needs to be punished for his many sins, which consequently seems to relate to her own mental issues.
