Always Running Final Paper Today it isn’t difficult for a Chicanx or other minority to get a degree or create a prosperous life for themselves through hard work, but back in the mid-1900s, that was not the case. The American Southwest in the mid-1900s was not the most inviting or friendliest place for Mexicans and Chicanos. Many were born into extreme poverty or already came impoverished, many were degraded and sometimes dehumanized by racism, and many felt like they did not belong in the land of the free. Often times, young Mexicans and Chicanos had no choice. They had to resort to roaming the streets, doing drugs, committing crimes, and joining gangs in order to feel like they belonged and to give meaning to their lives. According to Rodriguez, one of his first experiences in school was being put in the back of the classroom, being ignored and isolated. His first teacher basically let him “‘play with some blocks until [they] figure out how to get [him] more involved’” just because he did not speak any English (Rodriguez, 26). Often times, many teachers during this time did not know how to deal with Mexican or Chicano students who did not speak much or any English, so they usually were neglected or not favored over their white counterparts. Consequently, many young Mexicans and Chicanos grow disinterested in school (usually even drop out) due to the fact they are left out or not accommodated for. Rodriguez calls this type of education system, a “two-tiered” education system, where whites were given a better quality education compared to their colored counterparts. After reading Miguel and Valencia’s “From the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to Hopwood,” I was shocked to find how Mexican Americans were treated in American students. I was expect poor treatment from our discussions in class as well as other readings, but after reading what the authors reported, including schools failing to address learning issues and pushing kids instead into economic mobility, I am deeply troubled I was not made aware of this sooner. Along with segregation on race basis, I would argue the struggles of Mexican American students was the greatest struggle for education equality in the 20th century, though the struggles gone through by other minorities surely should be discounted or overlooked. The Running Man essay- Jamie Bouzianis The Running Man, by Michael Gerard Bauer (2004) portrays the theme of outsiders within a society. As Michael Gerard Bauer demonstrates isolation and exclusion, through various characters, this depicts the dangers of institutionalising and “Putting people in boxes”. The characters that illustrate this efficiently are Tom Leyton and Joseph Davidson, due to them being judged and deceived by others which therefore makes them feel like outsiders within their own community. This is portrayed through characterisation, metaphors, similes and motifs.
“According to the U.S. Census,” Muñoz writes, “by 1930 the Mexican population had reached 1,225,207, or around 1% of the population.” As a result the discrimination became more widespread and an overall greater problem in the U.S. Soon, this racism became propaganda and was evident throughout the media, “Patriots and Eugenicists argued that ‘Mexicans would create the most insidious and general mixture of white, Indian, and Negro blood strains ever produced in America’ and that most of them were ‘hordes of hungry dogs, and filthy children with faces plastered with flies [...] human filth’ who were ‘promiscuous [...] apathetic peons and lazy squaws [who] prowl by night [...] stealing anything they can get their hands on,” Muñoz writes. Run Lola Run by Tom Tykwer is a very unique film, the has no specific plot, nor a specific beginning or end. While there is no particular course of events, one particular event remains consistent throughout the film, Lola has twenty minutes to get 100,000 marks to her boyfriend, Manni, before he has to face Ronnie. Throughout the course of the film, Lola goes on three different runs, that all result in three alternative endings. It is evident that each of the alternative endings occur based on one thing, the pace that Lola runs. It appears that Tykwer is uses the structure of the film to make a general statement about the distinction between how one person’s actions influences other’s and fate .

The plot summarized into one line is that Lola has to get 100,000 marks within twenty minutes to save her boyfriend, Manni. “Lola runs in three experiments or 20-minute rounds – all in an attempt at continuity. In “theory” she must find 100,000 DM with which to save her boyfriend, Manni, who in his attempt to prove himself to several members of organised crime, acts as a courier for their cash and then proceeds to lose it on Berlin’s U-Bahn.

The sentiment that this system is long overdue for restructuring is felt across the board of educators, instructors, administration, and communities. The current system does not work for our students anymore. However, why would this system work for students anyway?
Decades ago, children of various races could not go to school together in many locations of the United States. School districts could segregate students, legally, into different schools according to the color of their skin. The law said these separate schools had to be equal. Many schools for children that possessed color were of lesser quality than the schools for white students. To have separate schools for the black and white children became a basic rule in southern society.
The passage, “Always Running” by Luis J. Rodriguez evokes the tone of indifference. Rodriguez demonstrates these tones through imagery. For example, at the beginning of the passage the narrator, Luis gives us background information about his living situation to set up imagery for the rest of the passage. Then, Luis sets the tone of indifference with this sentence “So without ceremony, we started over the tracks, climbing over discarded market carts and tore-up sofas.” This quote uses the literary device of imagery because the narrator is painting a picture of their environment.
Dr. Chris Faltis, a scholar on bilingual practices, race-radical vision in bilingual education and immigration theory, brings into light the discrimination that many Mexican immigrant families face in his article Eradicating Borders: An Exploration of ScholArtistry for Embracing Mexican Immigrant Children and Youth in Education. In the article he discusses the history of Mexican immigrants and America and how the Mexican immigrants during WWII “[worked] in the fields of Arizona and California, tended the fields that fed the nation, while living in deplorable conditions.” (51). He claims that metropolitan cities like Las Vegas would not have been able to achieve the levels of growth they were able to achieve without the labor Mexican immigrants provided (51).
Culture is an essential part of a community’s identity, because it links individuals to a collective bond. The Americas have always contained a vast variety of cultural communities, especially in the United States. The US is known for being one of the most diverse nations in the world, housing hundreds of different cultures. Mexican-Americans display a strong sense of a cultural background, which falls as a subset of the bigger Latino culture that links all Latinos. Oral history is a major aspect on the Mexican culture, which contributes to the truth of how history in the United States actually happened.

For this book review, I am going to be talking about David Montejano’s book entitled Quixote’s Soldiers, A local history of the Chicano Movement, 1966-1981. The author’s purpose is very well explained and it is not hard to understand. The author clearly tries to explain different ideologies, individuals and organizations located in one of the Southwest’s major cities, San Antonio, Texas, during the late 1960s and early 190s.
