Was the Constitution written for you? This is a speech named “America has gone to sleep” written by Shirley Chisholm. On October 3, 1983, at Greenfield High School in Greenfield. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to Congress. While being a member of the congress she attacked a massive problem America was sleeping on. So she delivers a speech discussing a coalition between African Americans and women. To help make this world a better place. The way the author Chisholm uses figurative language in this speech is to acquire us to understand that this is how this makes us feel. In the middle of the speech she states “So they came because the words at the foot of the statue of liberty beckoned to them and gave them the …show more content…
Right after that she quotes “Our confrontation must be against women in the kitchen” These three quotes try to get the people to understand that to change the confrontation there needs to be many changes involved. The use of Syntax in this speech is very successful because she repeats the first two words so that people gain the feeling this is something that they thought of. These three quotes all target what has to change in confrontation in order for change to come. With this in mind, the author Chisholm also uses logos as a way to back her reason up with logic, so that people are more prone to agree with her since the information she’s giving will give them a reason to. An example to back that up is a quote where she states “We must remember that when the constitution was written, that women were regarded as property and that blacks were only regarded as ⅗ of a person.” As I stated before she gives women information on how like African Americans they were looked down upon including not seen as human beings when the constitution was written. This is very successful because it makes them look at the constitution in a different way including questioning their own worth, which would cause them to want to bring a change to …show more content…
The use of pathos and logos in this speech is successful because it helps her argument on how African Americans and women of American problems are similar and if they were to work together they would be able to make a change. In the final analysis Chisholm uses logos and tells us information that’s very important as to why a change should be made, which will cause us to agree because what she gives us are facts. So she has a great reason as to why a discussion ought to be made along with changes. The use of logos transfers into pathos because down the road realization hits and it shows that America is considered the land of the “free” yet the way that African Americans along with women are treated unequal doesn’t represent that, so it makes them feel guilty. Which also stores the use of syntax and figurative language. The way that Chisholm uses logos is a way to give people facts and inform them about what is wrong so that they are more inclined to agree since she’s correct. Pathos which is another rhetorical device uses the fact that America is a
John Lewis used primarily logos. John Lewis wanted more from the civil rights bill, so his purpose was to inspire the crowd to want more. He Uses logos when he says “Unless Title III is put in this bill, there is nothing to protect the young children and old women who must face police dogs and fire hoses in the South while they engage in peaceful demonstrations.” (Lewis pg.1). This is an example of logos because he logically explains that if they don't change the bill there will still be problems, this inspires people to want Article 3 and that they shouldn't settle for less, he does this by mentioning the repercussions of excluding this bill from the civil rights act.
Seeing how big of a problem racial injustice in America was, she decided to fight against it. In her speech, she mentions, “And when I screamed loud enough,
African American women not only perform duties traditionally performed by men, such as cleaning homes and working in fields, but they also fulfill the role of women by having children. Therefore, do they not deserve the same rights as men? If men can do this, and so can women, are they not equal? The appeal to logic that Truth applies is difficult to argue against, thus using it is extremely effective. She is proving that black women can complete tasks that are identified as "manly," emphasizing the strength and skill of black women that are not acknowledged enough.
The only thing white people can do is stop denying black people their freedom.” These are both examples of Carmichaels use of logos, to convince his audience the need for black rights. Since his audience is mainly colored, The logistical side of this connects with them, as they understand and believe this is how colors are treated, creating a very influential and empowering speech for
Finally, she uses ethos, which is the appeal to credibility. She used logos, pathos and ethos in hope of persuading her audience to vote for her as the next president. Firstly, Chisholm use logos to add logic and reasoning to her speech. An example of logos that she said was, “I do not intend to offer to you the tired and glib
Logos, or logical appeal, uses a clear line of reasoning supported by evidence, such as facts or data. Pathos, or emotional appeal, uses loaded or charged language and other devices to arouse emotions. Using these, he influenced people to follow him. If he would not have spoken up, the world could have ended up still being segregated today. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used pathos and logos in his speech to draw in people so
When analyzing “Remarks on the Assassination of MLK” I noticed that the speaker, Robert F. Kennedy use the rhetorical modes of ethos, pathos, and logos in his speech. This speech is a eulogy regarding to death of Martin Luther King Jr. spoken in front of a large mass of his supporters. In the third, sixth, and ninth paragraph, Kennedy uses ethos to try to win over the supporter by appealing to their morality. He explains that in order to move the country in a direction away from polarization they should make an effort to understand, comprehend, and replace violence with compassion and love just as MLK tried to do. Later on in the sixth paragraph, Kennedy states that America does not need division nor hatred but instead needs wisdom, compassion,
The world has developed in many areas such as in gender, sexual, and racial rights. Shirley Chisholm stands as one of these individuals in history that has paved a path to equality. Her Presidential bid, delivered on January 25, 1972, is one moment cemented in history. This paper will analyze that speech by examining her pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos is Greek for an appeal of emotion.
Clinton attempts to use propaganda, empathy, and logic to present her point, that women to her audience, and succeeds at it. Overall, the speech is balanced in its argument style and use of rhetoric, such as the factors mentioned above. At this point, Clinton was not a New York senator yet, but only First Lady, yet she used her position to go to conferences, such as this conference, and speak out for women’s rights, as they are the same as human
To begin with Dr. King used logos in his speech to educate the people and give them evidence and logic. Dr. King used both logos and pathos in his speech here is an example of logos used in his speech. “ Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, Signed the Emancipation Proclamation. ”(King 261) is the quote that Dr. King wrote in his speech. He is telling them that the African Americans have been free for five hundred years and that was a great point in history but the African Americans aren’t treated equally or fairly.
The readers of this piece can sense the anger expressed her about the views of the black community and that first line shows that this piece will continue to be as hard hitting as the beginning lines. Another powerful line in the same piece would be a line that talks about being a black woman is not a misfortune on her behalf and is calling out the people who view the black community as
Dr. Kings “I Have a Dream” speech shows powerful examples of logos and pathos. His effectiveness relies heavily on his usage of these two ways to explain the pain and suffering of segregation. By him capturing his true life’s reality through pity and credible sources allows him to become successful in attempting to end the racism crisis. King states that, “when our republic was writing the Declaration of Independence, they were making a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the ‘unalienable rights’ of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Logos is the prime example of King using this event of writing the Declaration of Independence.
Winfrey then utilizes figurative language to emphasize how indebted she feels towards Parks. To demonstrate how grateful she is that Rosa Parks did not move out of her seat she writes, “I know that. I know that. I know that. I know that, and I honor that” (Winfrey Par. 2).
Kennedy used logos and ethos in his speech to persuade and convince his audience that they should join his side of the argument. John F. Kennedy uses logos in his speech when he gives statistics comparing black lives to white lives. Here is one example of him using logos, “The Negro baby born in America today, regardless of the section of the State in which he is born, has about one-half as much chance of completing a high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day,” John F. Kennedy goes on to list many more examples. This application of logos is used to show the audience the factual difference between white and black lives and how it is wrong because it doesn’t make sense to have that much of a difference just because that we have different color skin. John F. Kennedy uses ethos is his speech to persuade his audience that his argument is morally right and the opposing side is wrong.
Martin Luther uses logos effectively throughout his speech. Dr. King says,“ But one hundred years later, the Negro is not free” ( Luther). The fact is that one hundred year has past still no improvement on the situation. Another example is the analogy “ America has given the Negro people a bad check a check which has not come back marked insufficient funds”( King). He reasons that most people are understanding lack of money. King’s speech was effectively because of how he formatted his speech.
