The structure of one’s brain is routed from birth. Traumatic events may cause the routing of the brain to alter or change completely. Amos Decker was a professional football player for the Cleveland Browns for one play. During this play he was running down the field to tackle the kick returner when Dwayne LeCroix blindsided him. Decker died twice on that football field during the opening game. When he awoke in a hospital the next day, his brain had been completely rewired. He now suffers from Hyperthymesia Syndrome. Hyperthymesia is the condition of possessing an superior autobiographical memory. The disease affected many aspects of his life negatively, but it did give a magnificent advantage at taking tests for the police academy and later …show more content…
The next tragic event occurs at Mansfield High School, where eight people are viciously murdered using a shotgun and .45 pistol. These two traumatic events foreshadow the rest of the tale. A transsexual is gang raped, beaten, and left for dead in a high school dumpster. A cop, assistant principle, football coach, and four football players are the males who raped her. After this event she was sent to a rehabilitation center in Chicago to help her understand how to cope with hyperthymesia. Decker was sent to the same rehabilitation center as the young transsexual. During their stay at the center, group counseling meetings were held to help rebuild social skills. Decker explained that his goals in life were to become a cop. “I wanted to become a cop because I wanted to help people. Not hurt them like Evers did you” (320). The killings involved the exact same weapon in order to draw a connection between all the murders connecting to Decker. After the forensic team identified the matching bullets, other messages were revealed in different locations. The messages were cleverly designed for Decker to solve the case. Once he solved the case it would lead him right to the serial killers and maybe his own death. The technique of foreshadowing allowed the reader to become curious about how to clues could be perceived, thus keeping the story
The victim was threw in the river. The victim’s husband return home from an overnight trip to discover his wife missing and home a mess. The same day the husband discovered his wife missing her body was found by some fishermen. Christopher Simmons’s was going around town boasting and bragging about how he killed the victim and robbed her. Simmons’s was later arrested where he attended high school.
A superintendent, Gus Sayer, from South Hadley High School informed the staff and students about the fifteen year old Phoebe Prince's death. However, the small town of South Hadley already knew Phoebe Prince was dead. The message about Phoebe Prince’s death was sent out on Thursday and by Friday there was a student-run candlelight vigil on the school's softball field. Local papers began to say students knew Phoebe Prince was miserable at school. These local papers had horrible headlines such as “Teenager Bullied to Death” and “...Phoebe Prince 15, Suspected of Committing Suicide Because of Bullying”.
Since the passing of Mike Webster in 2002, a number of high-profile former NFL players have been diagnosed with CTE. High-profile players such as Ken Stabler, the former quarterback for the Oakland Raiders and 2016 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and John Mackey, the former tight end for the New York Giants and 1992 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. And similarly, to Mike Webster, players diagnosed with CTE, faced cognitive difficulties and behavioral change during their time on earth. For example, before Justin Strzelczyk, former offensive lineman for the Pittsburg Steelers, died in a car crash when he hit a tank truck while driving 90 miles per hour against the flow of traffic in an attempt to evade the cops, Dr. Jim Doran diagnosed Justin with manic behavior, psychoses and hospitalization necessary. In addition, his wife felt “the man who passed away [wasn’t] the man [she] was married to.”
The first example is future hall of famer Junior Seau. In 2012, he was the first of many NFL players to get diagnosed with CTE. On May 2, 2012 he was found dead at his home in California with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest (“What is CTE”). Later he went in for an autopsy and it revealed that he had CTE.
One wrong move and he’s dead. The goliath of a football player lay there motionless as grasped his head tightly making sure not to move even ever so slightly. The scorching rays of the sun burned at the back off my head as I stayed frozen like statue a simple twitch could cost a life. Although I knew that this was merely a simulation of an on field concussion I had to prove it to myself and my classmates that I was strong enough to spine board this colossal football
In the true story based movie and the documentary, the dangers of head injuries in football are laid out for the viewer. Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered the brain injury chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE; however, the NFL was in denial about the effects football had on the brain and had on causing CTE. I believe that the NFL’s denial to the accusations were detrimental to many football players and that serious consideration should be taken into the way football is played overall. When Dr. Omalu originally diagnosed CTE on Mike Webster and the NFL denied that football was the cause for his death and disease.
But the precogs don't know, the detectives don't know, because all the events leading up to the possible murder are exactly the same. The detectives figure out where and who is committing this possible murder. They storm into the house, snatch the knife from the possible murderer’s hands and arrest him for the future murder of his wife and her lover. A murder that was never going to happen because the second future was the one that played out.
Concussions are always going to be a huge deal due to the fact on what they lead to, which is CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). In “Seau 's Suicide Helped To Make Concussions In Football A National Issue” David Greene provides a statistics on Junior Seau and what doctors found in his brain after he died: “And there was CTE - chronic brain damage caused by repeated blows to the head” (Greene). CTE is a disease that peopl obtain from multiple head traumas and Junior Seau played in the NFL for a long 20 seasons, ended up having CTE and doctors believe this lead to his suicide. In “Headbanger Nation” Jeffrey Kluger provides some very tragic information on college football player at penn state: ¨Owen Thomas committed suicide in april of 2010 and got examined by Boston College and he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) which is seen mostly in NFL players who have had many concussions Owen never had a concussion”(Kluger).
Head Trauma: An NFL Player’s Worst Reality The ideal autumn Sunday, for many of us, involves dedicating time to watch football with friends or family─we consider this a great source of relaxation. Whether it be a classic rivalry or a sensational divisional matchup, people across America enjoy football. However, most viewers do not examine the safety of the players providing entertainment.
“Deadly Hits” by Lauren Tarshis analyzes the topic of concussions. Over 300,000 concussions, or brain injuries, occur each year in sporting events. Ms. Tarshis analyzes 13-year-old Zackery Lystedt, a Tahoma Junior High football player, who suffered a near-fatal concussion while playing football in Seattle, Washington. According to the author, Zackery ’s injury was the result of a head injury.
With the movie "Concussion" appearing in theatre 's last December, I took it upon myself to dive deeper into the subject. This time with the same concept, but with a different group of football players. More specifically, the young football players in which the injuries received, being both minor and major injuries, contributes to the development of their brain structures. Within each hit these young players take, the still growing brain comes to a halt every time the team makes a tackle that damages the brain further than most humans do throughout their lifetime. Many different scientists have been conducting experiments to provide proof of how concussions can cause a decline in lifespan of young football players.
Football concussions can lead to brain injuries or other serious health issues that can be fatal. Concussions can happen in many different ways, which all involve big hits to the head. Hard hits to a player's head can cause his or her brain to move in different ways which can cause brain bruising or bleeding. A hard hit to a player’s forehead causes the brain to accelerate in a back and forth motion that can make a player feel nauseous or unstable. If the hit is focussed in the left or right side of a player's forehead it can cause the brain to move in a twisting motion which will leave the player light headed and with a headache.
2. An academically and socially struggling 11-year-old female student, Irina, comes to speak with the school counselor, Mrs. Moon, about her increasing awareness of herself as lesbian. Irina’s parents are conservative Catholics and the culture of the school community is likewise politically conservative. She would like to meet in a group with other gay and lesbian students in the school. As a result of the school’s emphasis on the Common Core, group counseling has been eliminated this year.
The long-term side effects of these traumatic injuries have led spectators and doctors to speculate the dangers of head on collision in sports. Furthermore, concussions lead to TBI which leads to depression and problems with their functioning. Brain injuries have led to famous NFL players committing suicide and losing their families and
A Streetcar Named Desire exhibits multiple examples of behavior such as sexist, patriarchal, and/or sexually hostile attitudes. By allowing students to read this play in educational environments, these heavily flawed demeanors are being tolerated and thus promoting rape culture. An article on rape education explains that, “The many factors that both singly and in combination contribute to adolescent acquaintance rape are well documented in the literature. These contributing factors include [various rape myths, acceptance of or ignorance surrounding dating violence, alcohol and drug usage and male–female communication problems]” (Fay and Medway). Factors of pieces of literature similar to A Streetcar Named Desire have the potential to advance adolescent acquaintance rape, which is a severe situation.
