Before the narrator’s crush arrives for dinner she contemplates, “What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas?”   Her questioning shows her fear of embarrassment in the about the upcoming dinner. Tan’s use of the word “shabby” focuses on the narrator’s feelings that her traditional Chinese dinner is not as good as the traditional American Christmas

Gene Luen Yang, born August 9th, 1973, attended the University of California. When he was a child he did research on Walt Disney, which made him want to grow up to be an animator. He majored in computer science, while minoring in creative writing. He then became a teacher of computer science. Gene Luen Yang informs and promotes understanding about Asian history and stereotypes through his literary works American Born Chinese, Boxers, and Saints.

In the passage written by Amy Tan the author uses adjectives and feelings to reveal that an embarrassing experience in her youth changed her prospective on her heritage by showing her she needs to always be reminded of her heritage. One of Amy’s emotions in this passage is she feels embarrassed that her Chinese family that came over would get up to get their while the American would wait patiently for the food to be passed. One thing that made Amy embarrassed was when her dad took the fish cheek and said “Amy your favorite.” Another emotion was she was scared that the boy wouldn’t like their Chinese food or wouldn’t like there Chinese Christmas. But Amy’s fear was realized because the ministers family didn’t eat a lot nor did they talk.

The poem has life experiences of a fourteen-year-old girl who is caught between the Japanese and American culture. The young girl claims that she does not know how to use Japanese chopsticks that are symbolic of the Japanese culture. In fact, the girl claims that she understands more the hot dogs as opposed to using chopsticks (Rhea 7). This means that the girl seems to understand the American culture as opposed to her Japanese culture. The girl identifies more with the American culture and thus the issue of American identity.

The author Amy Tan, in her text she deals with living in the American society more than the other author because she gives the reader a clear idea of what she is going through at the moment. What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked poor proper American manners?” Tan

During Christmas, Tan is worrying about how Robert is going react about their culture. Tan’s mom sees that she does not like the culture of her family in front of Robert. Furthermore, her mom does not want her daughter to be ashamed of her family and her culture. The best way for Tan’s mom to teach her a lesson is to follow their culture on her way to cook and act, and she says something unique, “Your only shame is to have a shame.” Its change the way she thinks after year later (111).

In "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan, the author utilizes the symbolic beige tweed miniskirt to represent the main characters yearning to be the same as American girls. After her parents invited her crushes family over for dinner she is apprehensive as to what he will presume about her traditional relatives and culture. The text states,"What will he think of our Shabby Chinese Christmas"(2). Which reveals that she wants to be like traditional Americans and doesn 't appreciate the unique differences about her culture. She also spends too much time caring about what the boy will think of her relatives and the non-american food served, that she doesn 't fancy over the fact that all her favorite foods were served.

This story is about a young chinese girl, who is embarrassed about her culture. And that night people were coming over for dinner and so she did not want them to judge her culture or the foods they eat. Then at the dinner table her father embarrassed her. She wanted to leave because her father asked her if she wanted the cheeks out of the fish.

Some information about the author: She was born in China and studied in a local Chinese school for a few years before switching to an International school. It provided her the chance to experience first hand the real meaning behind "broken English", and understand how non-standard varieties of English have their own rules and shape a community 's sense of identity. In this story by Gish Jen's called “Who’s Irish?" it tells a story about an elderly Chinese woman living in America as she and her family struggle with issues concerning the correct way to raise a child, and cultural differences between the two families. She is an old fashion elderly lady who migrated from China. When she came to America she had a hard time and struggled to adapt to the new lifestyle. Having a daughter that's married to an man who is not Chinese and having a mixed granddaughter made it more complicated for her to adapt emotionally as well.

At the end of the dinner Amy's father burped loudly as it is a sign of respect towards the cook showing gratitude for the food. After everyone had left, Amy’s mother noticed her embarrassment all night and said “You want to be the same as American girls on the outside.” She the handed Amy an early gift, It was a beige tweed colored mini skirt. After she told Amy that she must always be Chinese on the inside and to be proud of who she was, because the only shame is to be ashamed. It took Amy years to truly figure out what her mother was trying to teach her, and after she figured it out she was proud of her ethnicity.

Amy Tan is a Chinese-American author who was born on February 19, 1952, in Oakland, California. In Tan’s early life she had many struggles because her parents desired for her “to hold onto Chinese traditions and her own longings to become more Americanized” (Encyclopedia). While she wanted to become a writer when she was still young, her parents wanted her to become a neurosurgeon. When she got older and went to college she majored in English then started her career in the 1970’s. She was a technical writer and then started writing fiction stories.
