The 1989 film Glory highlights the bravery displayed by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. It is a powerful and engaging film that holds the attention of the audience with action-packed scenes and emotionally-charged performances by the actors. It touches on historical events such as the Battle of Antietam and the storming of Fort Wagner. Glory chronicles the struggles faced by one of the first all African-American Infantry Regiments as they fought the Confederate enemy, while also fighting injustices in the army in which they served. The film opens with a scene portraying the Battle of Antietam where Union soldiers are being led by Captain Robert Gould Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick. This battle took …show more content…
The partial victory of the Battle of Antietam gave President Lincoln the backing he needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which states "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." However, there were some limitations, such as slavery was unaffected in bordering states and it was dependent on a Union victory. Ultimately, the Emancipation Proclamation itself did not end slavery but it did provide a great boost in the moral of many …show more content…
Their pay was indicative of that. It was assumed upon enlistment that African American soldiers would receive pay as white soldiers. However, it came to light that while white soldiers received $13 per week, African American soldiers only received $10 per week. In protest of the injustice, the soldiers and officers of the entire regiment refused pay until black soldiers and white soldiers were compensated equally. It was not until the war was almost over that this happened.
Initially, the 54th Infantry was given menial duties, such as manual labor; it was questioned by many whether they would see battle. However, on July 16, 1863 they faced Confederate troops on the battlefield on James Island, South Carolina. The 54th Infantry was successful in halting an attack by the Confederates at the cost of 42 Union
What does the Union assault scene at the beginning of the movie tell you about the ferocity of modern combat during the Civil War? War during the time period of the American Civil War was particularly brutal. When the union soldiers attempt to attack the entrenched confederate soldiers they try tunneling beneath them to detonate several kegs of gunpowder. When the actual assault begins, Inman is witness to one of his fellow soldiers being stabbed fatally with a bayonet.
In this essay, I will be concentrating more on the facts of the Battle of Antietam then the tactical movements, or all the decisions made during this battle. I will however cover some key points that do point to poor leadership and execution of plans. Most of this essay will cover facts of Special Order 191, errors in judgment by General George B. McClellan, the sunken road, the importance of victory needed for General Robert E. Lee, and lastly the overall analysis of the outcome. At dawn on the morning of September 17, 1862, the nation’s bloodiest battle and bloodiest day in American History occurred. The battle began with an attack by General Joseph Hooker to capture the plateau in which the Dunker Church now called sat upon and a small creek that ran through the battlefield named Antietam Creek; hence, this is where the name The Battle of Antietam originated.
This is were Glory begins the movie depicts the story through Shaw’s eyes from the battle of Antietam where Shaw is dumb founded by the horror of war, now this is a tad bit of a history let off because he would have already seen combat casualties in the 1st battle of Winchester where there were huge casualties
The Confederate forces were soon joined by back up reinforcements of their own as 30,000 Confederates drove back approximately 20,000 Union troops on the first day of the battle (Civil War Trust 2014). Day Two saw an increase in personnel on both sides as Union forces held an area populated by hills and ridges at the Southern region of Gettysburg while Confederate forces slowly wrapped their men around their opponent's positions. The Confederates were advancing to take the fight but the Union stood their ground (Civil War Trust 2014). By the third day, the fighting continued at a number of vital areas but the most important element of the battle was the Confederate assault of 12,000 infantry on the center of the Union line at Cemetery Ridge, aka Pickett's Charge. It would prove to be a big mistake for Lee and the Confederacy as the Union brigades drove them back, inflicting immeasurable harm on their Southern adversaries and forcing them into retreat (Civil War Trust
Glory vs Dances with Wolves What if there were no emotional or character developments in Glory and Dances with Wolves? Throughout the movie Glory and Dances with Wolves, a lot of major character and emotional developments occur. Characters that are deeply hurt, broken and were able to change because of another person or event. The way the movies show events in very good details are very good and excellent.
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22 1862 freeing slaves. The battle of Antietam was the first battle that was fought on northern territory. This battle is one of the bloodiest single day battles in American
Since the battle took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland it would be the first attack by the Confederates on Union territory. The Confederates were very hopeful that they would be victorious because this would definitely have a big impact on how the war would turn out because it would give General Robert E. Lee the knowledge that he can attack the Union on their home soil and have a chance of winning. “The action of the army against the rebels has not been quite what I should have best liked. But they have been driven out of Maryland, and Pennsylvania is no longer in danger of invasion.” This quote is by Abraham Lincoln explaining that he was not proud of the battle because of the number of casualties, but regardless they still came out with a victory.
Lincoln found slavery heinous, but he knew that neither Northerners nor southerners would support the abolition of slavery as a war aim. By mid-1862, Lincoln saw slaves fleeing to join northern armies; which convinced Lincoln that abolition had become the morally correct war aims. He waited until he had a Union military success before he gave the proclamation. Five days after the battle of Antietam, Lincoln gave the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. As of January 1, 1863 all slaves in the rebellious states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”
The Emancipation Proclamation The President Abraham Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union rather than the removal of slavery while the Civil War began in 1861. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January, 1863, and it said all slaves in the rebellious states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” The Emancipation Proclamation was a big turning point for the war, transforming the fight to save the nation into a battle for human freedom. The Emancipation Proclamation did three important things to the Civil War. It changed the main goal of the Civil War, it allowed the slaves to serve in the Union Army and it affected European nations.
Regardless of this, the unit showed extraordinary courage and dedication (“The 54th”). Their attack on Fort Wagner caused great damage on the fort, leading the confederates to leave it soon afterwards (“The 54th”). Glory tells this story almost flawlessly but there are some minor historical inaccuracies throughout the movie: Robert Gould Shaw in the film is shown to accept the job of commanding the
In the beginning of the occurrence Shaw Initially only took the the command of the 54th regiment to satisfy his mother and father. Shaw
The Battle of Omaha beach was a turning point for the Allies to run the Nazis out of France. The infantry that were fighting at Omaha beach were the 1st and 29th. This battle was remembered as the most bloody American battle of the Second World War. The director, Steven Spielburg in his film provided clear imagery for the perspective of the American 29th infantry, in Saving Private Ryan made in 1998. The whole movie was set around Captain Miller and his 2nd Ranger Battalion in the 29th infantry division having a successful battle and winning Omaha beach.
The men of the 54th regiment proved themselves worthy of the freedom for which they were fighting, and the respect of their fellow white soldiers. Through the eyes of Shaw the movie glory is told . At the beginning of the movie, Shaw is fighting in a battle and manages to survive despite heavy union losses. Horrified by the violence of the war
Fights continue so coach Boone makes are choice to take the boys to the field that the Battle of Gettysburg had happened. Coach Boone speaks to the boys “Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight we are still fighting among ourselves today’’. There is more to the speech but this part really speaks volume and shows the struggle at the time. Two of the alpha’s on the team come together.
This proclamation was issued to help end slavery, as Mr. Lincoln believed that slavery was very wrong. The Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery right when it was issued, as many people think, however the emancipation proclamation,"did not free all slaves in the United States. Rather, it declared free only those slaves living in states not under Union control." (pbs) The final document of the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863.
