An Indian Father's Plea '

In 2008, Father Jeff Bayhi was a pastor in Louisana at the parish of St. John the Baptist in Zachary, Louisana when a fourteen year old girl came to him in confession. She revealed that a member of the church had been abusing her. Father Bayhi, now six years later, faces possible excommunication because the parents of the girl had sued him and the Diocese of Baton Rouge for not reporting the crime. In the district’s court, the parents won the appeal for forcing the priest to testify. However, the state’s highest court reverted the district court’s decision.

In life you have many choices. One of which is deciding whether or not you are going to succeed or fail in life. In other words, choosing to stay hopeful or not. In the “Absolute True Diary of a Part- Time Indian” Junior goes through many situations where hope is needed. The author Sherman Alexie puts Junior as well as other characters in situations to make those hard decisions.

In “Legal Aliens”, “A Indian fathers plea “and Everyday use how that it affects cultural diversity because as individuals we don’t give each other respect. In Pat Mora’s “Legal Alien”, she feels like she is cultural unwanted in her own country. ” You may speak Spanish but you’re not like me” (Mora 40). One’s eyes look at her like that and she could just see them say that.

An individual’s environment can drastically affect their worldview. From the way their parents raised them to the books they choose to read, anything that they encounter can shape their perspective on religion, politics, or education., politics, or education. For example in “An Indian Father's Plea” the sons environment changed when he starts school, gets labeled a slow learner, and cuts off his hair to be like the other kids. Culture affects how one views others and the world around them in a large way as shown by past experiences, heritage, and family. Family affects our culture because the people we spend our life with have such a large impact on the way we act. Moreover our past experiences affect us by learning from what we and others do and the result. Things one has experienced in the past greatly affects how one views the world. This is clearly shown in Robert Lake’s(Medicine Grizzlybear’s) essay, “An Indian Father’s Plea.”

Jaleah-Pink Without culture we as a community will not have a sense of touch with our identity. Culture brings us life and ways how we see the world in our view. Culture is based on everything you were taught and lived through when you was growing up examples are like playing sports, being respectful to others, being taught from what is right and what is wrong. Culture impacts our lives in many ways and in different circumstances. I strongly agree that culture will be a part of everyone 's lives for generations.

One’s culture is often learned by watching other people and imitating their actions. The same goes for learning a subject or a language. Generally, languages can even define a culture. In the United States, a way into the culture is to learn the predominant language. This is true for other cultures, as well.

Culture is, indeed, the higher learning. But, this higher learning is not acquired at universities; rather, it is assimilated continuously from earliest infancy when human beings first begin to trust in those familiar responses others make to their overtures. “culture must communicate ideals, setting as internalities those distinctions between right actions and wrong that unite men and permit them the fundamental pleasure of agreement” The secret to the vitality of culture is its historical continuity and communication. Culture originates in an organic form from its sources, and national self-interest exists in maintaining secular national consciousness from generation to generation.

Diverse worlds can connect in similar ways. Different cultures can be considered their own diverse worlds when compared to others. The way people with different cultures are taught, along with their cultural background, affects their viewpoints of the world. While everyone lives in the same world, in a way they live in their own world, depending on their culture and ethnicity. The comparison of different cultures shows how they are similar yet different in their own ways.

A tension between Indian parent and their children is how close of a family they are as opposed to American Families. In American society it’s not rare for teenagers to be autonomous, but children from different backgrounds (immigrant families) face a problem when they try to be autonomous. “Young Indian- Americans of high school and college are comparing themselves with their non-Indian classmates, and repeatedly express frustration at their own parents efforts to restrict their movements, monitor their behavior and make decisions for them”( Lessinger, 109). The ways our culture inform the world are very diverse and bold. Because all cultures are important to each and every one of us, thus our culture heavily influences each and everyone and every culture around us. Culture is all around us no matter where you go, it will always with you. It has a massive impact on each and every one of us. Our culture influences our view of almost everything we see and hear in the world.

In “An Indian Father’s Plea” by Robert G. Lake-Thom, Lake-Thom uses transitions to help connect his ideas and create a well written essay. In the twelfth paragraph the author discusses the knowledge that his son possessed before he began going to the school he is currently attending. Since Lake-Thom is listing the knowledge his son possessed before starting at that school he uses the transitional expression “and” frequently in this paragraph. Lake-Thom also repeatedly uses the transitional expression “but” when he says that while his son may not be able to do something that other non-Indian children his age can do such as writing their names he has knowledge of other things that those children don’t have. Sherman Alexie writes the story “Indian Education” using a deadpan tone to build and connect the years of the narrator 's life together in an ironic way. Alexie is able to utilize irony through the use of separate, short sections within the story. The rapid presentation of events, simple thoughts, and poetic points made within the story enable the reader to make quick connections about the narrator’s life to draw more complex realizations. The art that Alexie uses to write this very short story is poetic in nature through the meaning and structure of his writing. By the fact that the reader can draw deeper conclusions about the narrator 's life from Alexie’s writing is evident that his writing is poetic.

One’s perspective is affected by their environment, their surroundings, and the culture they choose to adapt. Due to everybody’s unique cultural identity, we are all different, however, to others, one might be viewed as simple-minded or alien, as shown in “An Indian Father’s Plea”. An example from the essay would be “...I can't understand why you have already labeled him a ‘slow learner’ ”. The son was stereotyped because he is different, darker, and unlike the other ‘white’ children. Both part of distinct culture, the Indians and white people, were educated and nourished differently.

It is Luke’s fatherly love for his daughter that leads to his dilemma between pursuing the truth of doing what is just and right and demonstrating his love for his daughter. " A Father's Story," by Andre Dubus shares that the love of a father toward his own daughter means that he will protect her even if the process calls for him to misplace a part of himself. To protect his daughter, the father is forced to undergo challenges, a battle between his mind and his values. In the story, Luke Ripley, the protagonist, drops his core principles and ethical values deliberately to protect his daughter. I believe that the central conflict in "A Father's story" is a betrayal of a friend's trust and personal values and ethics for the sake of love, because
