Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for equal rights for African Americans. He peacefully protested on various occasions and was a leader of the civil rights movement. For example, he protested at the March on Washington and gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Because he had a great effect on society, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. When Dr. King was alive, society was very different from present day. In the 1960’s the community was heavily divided and was experiencing the difficulty of segregation. The African Americans were not treated equally as the whites so Dr. King worked to improve the civil rights for African Americans. In his speech, he proclaimed that “Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.” If Dr. King was alive, he would not be satisfied with the amount of progress made since the 1960’s.
Additionally, in Dr. King’s speech, he declared that “Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality” and this still occurs. On January 27th, 2017 President Trump placed a travel ban on the following countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Syria. I can relate Dr. King’s speech to today because we still wish for a better future where race isn’t a problem. Our racial problems now don’t compare to the problems of the past, but there still is a long way to go. Fifty years later, there are still people who assume that a person’s race defines who they are, what they do, and what they’re good at. There are still so many restrictions in everyday life because of race. Dr. King’s dream has not yet become reality, but we are still working for it every day.

For example, King constantly describes the Negroes as being “crippled” by the “manacles of segregation”, “Storms of Persecution,” and “chains of discrimination.” Through these metaphors King indicates the crises the Negroes face. A few of King’s strongest metaphors are his references to prejudice: “the quick sands of racial injustice”, the “heat of oppression”, “the dark and desolate valleys of segregation”, and the “chains of discrimination.” King also indicates the unbearable inequality by creating an image: “the sweltering summer of the negro’s discontent.”
