United States presidents are expected to be great: great people, great leaders, and great presidents. But is it really possible for every single president to be great? Would that not just turn what was once considered greatness into mediocrity? Turn greatness into something no more or less than the expected performance of each president, something usual and expected and entirely unremarkable? As compelling as these questions are what first must be considered when considering such inquiries is how to actually determine what presidential greatness is. Barber’s model proposes that there are four types of presidents: Active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive, and passive-negative (Barber, 1972). Each of these four types in Barber’s theory are based off a series of personal characteristics that help to determine what type of president a potential candidate would be and thus how successful that person may be were they in office. Barber’s apparent findings with this model show that active-positive presidents tend to be more successful than passive negative ones (Barber, 1972). Yet while Barber’s model seems to be pretty accurate in determining what a president may be like it fails to accurately predict the success of a president and also fails to show particular difference in the greatness of past presidents. Each of the four categories that Barber theorized includes at least one president who is considered to have been a great president and at least one who has been considered to be an unremarkable president at best. That means that regardless of where a president may fall in Barber’s model they may still manage to make a great president. Presidency Article In Richard Neustadt’s often read book, “Presidential Power and the Modern President”, Richard observes the essence of presidential power while working in the executive branch. He served under President Franklin Roosevelt term and also stayed to serve under President Truman as well but it is said that President Kennedy brought presidential power with him in his time. During the first bit of his well written book, Neustadt expresses how the president’s good behavior and image can come with persuasion of others but the final page concludes Neustadt’s opinion on the struggles the president faces along with worldwide issues. Solinski English 190 17 September 2015 Summary of “Four Types of President” In his essay “Four Types of President” James David Barber distinguished between the four types of the presidential character. James created two baselines that are activity-passivity and positive-negative affect. James categorized the difference as active-negative; active-positive; passive-negative; and passive-positive and gave examples. The narrator wants the people to recognize their president before they cast their ballots for the president.
1. According to Neustadt, a strong president should be able to exert real power, which means influence. The president should be able to effectively influence the behavior of men who make up the government in the United States. A president should be able to get a bill through Congress and settle disputes within his scope of government, meaning Congress and particularly the Cabinet.
When Ronald Reagan was in office people did not think of him as a very good president at all, here is what one person had to say about him, “Reagan was not an extraordinarily well-regarded president during his eight years in office. He averaged a 53% job approval rating during his presidency, slightly below average for all U.S. presidents for which Gallup has recorded job approval ratings.”. More people had mixed reviews, Another person had said “Reagan 's ratings were higher than the averages of his three immediate predecessors, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, and Richard Nixon, supporting the arguments of those who contend that one of Reagan 's major contributions was to restore confidence in the presidency after the battering it took in the 1970s.”. President Eisenhower fit all four criteria for the greatest president. military service, outstanding leadership through a war, proof of betterment of the country by fulfillment of his campaign promises and propitious influence on domestic affairs. This of course is in part to his presidency residing in the Atomic Age in the 50’s to early 60’s after WWII. Eisenhower served from 1953-1961, and was the first president bound by the 22nd amendment.
Thomas Jefferson was America's strongest president. Jefferson has earned this title through his various achievements as an average citizen, and as our president. Jefferson also had a lot of experience in politics before becoming the president, which gave him a large advantage over other presidents on this list. From writing the declaration of independance, to starting Lewis and Clark's expedition, Jefferson was an all around influential, and strong president. Jefferson served the United States for over 50 years!
Based on John Tyler unexpected Presidency in 1841, he should be ranked with a 4.5. Though he was a slave owner and joined the Confederate State Congress during the civil war, he still had a very strong will during his Presidency that positively all Presidents after him. He would have been able to do much more if he was able to get anything past the other branches of the government. President John Tyler did not have much of any goals when he was inaugurated because he was serving as vise president before President William Henry Harrison died, but he did have some major accomplishments. At the beginning of office he had himself immediately sworn in which set a precedent for all Vice Presidents who became President.

Americans today are in a character crisis considering now it's all about reaching for the goal but it doesn't matter how you succeed just matters if you succeed. So in other words, people cheat to be at the top instead of trying and learning how to perform it in the right way. Years ago, churches and schools would preach to have moral ethics, but nowadays it's barely ever taught; what is taught is that you have to succeed no matter how you did it.
What decides whether or not someone is great in history? Is it that that they accomplished many great things or is it that they are a person that is outstanding and morally good person? If look at an average individual it is able to be seen that they are great on some level but first the person judging them will have to decide to judge them based on their character or accomplishments. That decision can change one’s lookout look on that person’s life and whether or not they are considered great.
The men who have dealt with this double-edged sword known as the modern presidency have often walked a very fine line between effectiveness and ineffectiveness, but all have attempted to use their power in one way or another. All presidents have fit into what is known as the six models of the presidency. These six models show the different elements that a president uses in office. Charismatic Leadership Throughout Americas history we have seen great leaders, mediocre leaders, and in some cases terrible leaders. When classifying whether somebody is a good leader, it is necessary to define what a good leader is, and what attributes a good leader obtains. The definition of a leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. Both FDR and Donald Trump successfully lead a group of people and were able to build a foundation through hard work and dedication. Their road to leadership may differ, but the way their personalities have sculpted their leadership is indistinguishable.
We had presidents that were astonishing and stunning as presidents, like George Washington, who led the victory of the continental army. We also had Abraham Lincoln, he freed slaves and gave them hope for their future as American citizens.
Can he be optimistic in times of despair? These are all questions of the president’s leadership, which is my first of three criterions for what makes a great president. The President has to be a man that can balance the institution of our government with strong morals, although some have had their morals in the wrong places. A good President has to have a stern belief in himself and his ideas in order to implement his visions.
In conclusion, the presidents of the past have come and gone ,but not one has been the perfect one. As of right now ,our presidency choices are not very bountiful. The president should be considering what they will be entering once they are declared president. This is a crucial job over a nation that could revolt at anytime, but if they manage to bring out there best traits for us, America could have a chance. These traits are my opinion, others may think the same or not, but we have a chance to find a president who fulfills the job that our founding
What does make a good president? A good president isn 't because of his or her looks or family history. A good president is a person who is humble but speaks their mind. They are not afraid to say what they think even if it makes people dislike them. They follow what their heart says and chooses that answer.
