Analysis Of Sociological Imagination

The five most important things I have learned throughout my semester in SOC 150 are about crime and perception of social problems, how fines and fees keep people in jails, about mobility and poverty, sexual assault on college campuses, and lastly about the school-to-prison pipeline. During our unit on crime I learned about the perception of a social problem in different parts of the country as well as to a single individual. The two readings about crime, “Crime Rates Have Plummeted” and “U.S. Crime Is Up but Americans Don’t Seem to Have Noticed” demonstrate that crime is a social problem to be interpreted differentially based on the person perceiving the problem. Sociological Imagination is the ability to think differently about the familiar routines of our daily lives to how society views them. (Crossman, 2017). C. Wright Mills (1959), characterizes Sociological Imagination as the " the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society". Thus, sociological imagination is the ability to see how things interact and influence each other from a social perspective. (Crossman, 2017).

Prisons: Who are more likely to end up in prison and why? The sociological perspective I chose was the Conflict Theory Perspective. The Conflict Theory Perspective purposes that Conflict theorists would examine whatever situation at hand to see how it promotes social inequality. According to the textbook, Conflict theorists make it their mission to find the underlying existing strains that exist today amongst society.

When a woman chooses to keep her baby, it may not be her decision; it may be her moral duty to the society influenced by her family’s pressure and religious belief. However, if she considers the broad social factors that will shape and influence her views, and that will allow her to make individual choices such as whether to keep her baby or not, she is applying what C. Sociology is the study of the human society. Since I have mentioned in the Sociology Biography Part I, that I and my family immigrated o United States of America in April 2010 from India. That was big changed in our lifestyle and big shocked in culture differences.

The sociological imagination allows a person to tell apart their personal problems from problems that affect society as a whole, however they can see how the two are connected. In doing this a person can discover that the current social structure and culture that surrounds them can be the root cause of their personal problems. One example is that an individual can see their personal problem of being poor as also the outcome of lack of resources in their community for obtaining higher education. Individuals within society are influenced by the socio-economic factors of the society which they inhabit. This essay will discuss Sociological imagination which was first mentioned by author C.W. Mills who wrote a book with the same title. The personal problem that will be discussed is childhood trauma, because it is broad this essay will focus more on depression and how it effects society on a larger scale. Lastly this essay will then show the advantages of using Social Imagination in our everyday life’s and how we can use it to the benefit of society on a wider scale. Sociological imagination can be defined as one’s awareness of the impact that society has on their personal life because of the outside conditions and circumstances. The outside world create standards for people, even if they do not know that they are being looked at in this way. Therefore, society influences a person’s behavior and limits their free will. This theory is clearly demonstrated in The Truman Show. The movie helps to deepen my understanding of sociological imagination and helps me to see how the outside world controls my life.

The Sociological Imagination Sociological imagination is a "quality of mind" that allows one to grasp "history and biography and the relations between the two within society.” (Elwell). Sociological imagination is understanding your situation while taking into consideration the broader society. It allows us to see our own society-, and the people within it- from an alternative perspective that of our own personal experiences and cultural biases. It therefore links society and the individual.

The sociological imagination helps us understand how social arrangements influence people’s behavior. Often people can’t distinguish “between personal troubles of milieu and public issues” (mills 2014, 4) and that is greatly affected by their social environment. This leads us to ask why people do certain things. In The Promise, Mills states that neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both (Mills 2014, 1).

His publication of the sociological imagination is considered a seminal piece, and is still considered relevant to society today. Through reference to the publications of C. Wright Mills, A. Giddens, M. Draper, and P. Christie, this essay will explore the sociological imagination critically and apply the various aspects of the sociological imagination to education in South Africa. This essay will also critically examine the challenge of increased suicide rates in schools in South Africa, illustrating this challenge as a ‘public issue’ and a ‘personal trouble’.

An example of Sociological Imagination in todays world can be the issue of poverty. Poverty is rapidly growing in the United States day by day. The poverty levels in the last few years have greatly increased. When an issue like this starts to form, Sociological Imagination is a very helpful way to look at the issue to understand it better. One must take the issue of Poverty itself and examine it by putting the issue on two different scales.

As Americans, we view the Constitution as a stepping stone to making the great country we live in today. Yet, we the people of the United States failed to realize another component in order to form a perfect union. Which is to establish and promote equal opportunities for a quality education for all. However, we live in a society where social locators such as class, gender, and race are huge factors in the determination of one’s educational future.
