Analysis Of Something In Between Jasmine De Los Santos

In My Antonia, Willa Cather pens a nostalgic story focused on a two people with a unique connection. Jim Burden narrates the story of Antonia Shimerda, the girl next door who happens to be a Bohemian emigrant. Jim moves to his grandparents’ house after his parents die; Antonia arrives in the United States with her family and little else. The two are vastly different, but bond quickly on the Nebraska prairie. Most people who study the novel acknowledge the obvious impact that Antonia has on Jim and see Antonia as “in one way or another, the center of the novel” (Lucenti).

The book I am reading is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. I predict that the author will explore the human rights issue of Immigration Laws and the plight of illegal aliens in the United States. I believe that this issue will be important in the story because Enrique the main character in the story is very driven to find his mother who has gone herself illegally to the United States to earn money to provide an education for her children and to better the life of her family. I made this prediction because Lourdes leaves her children in Honduras as she goes to make money in the United States and her son Enrique is left saying “Donde esta mi mami?” “Where is my mom?”

We are not our true selves. In fact, most of us don’t even realize this until much later in life when disaster strikes and we must face the harsh reality. We must face the harsh reality that for most of our life, we do not know who we are and we are not who we are meant to be. In reality, we are not the most-developed versions of our selves during times of joy and happiness. We are not our most-developed selves when everything seems to be falling into place and when all of our hard work is finally paying off.

The book that I chose to read for the first quarter is called “The Princess of Iowa”. This book was written by M. Molly Backes. I was really excited to read this book because it mentioned Iowa on the front cover. This book is about a teenage girl named Paige who is from Iowa. She is very popular and her life seems to be perfect.

Imagine being judged for the choices you make. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and The Raisin In The Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the characters in these three novels search for independence under unfortunate circumstances. This results in difficult decision making situations that they are later judged for. However, Hester confronts her sin, the Younger family moves into a white neighborhood house and the Wall’s kids move away from their abusive parents.

In the book Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez recalls his life story and personal history being raised, growing up in a family of migrant workers, in California. Born in Tlaquepaque, Mexico, in 1943, Francisco’s childhood, majority of the time, is spent working farm fields around California and various employments. However, regardless of the struggle of keeping the family household composed after being caught by border patrol, demanding labor, and facing poverty he was able to stay hopeful. Furthermore, he went on having an outstanding collegiate career. He went to Harvard University, but a graduate of Santa Clara University and acquired both a Master’s Degree and Doctorate from Columbia University.

From the start, it is clear that T.C. Boyle’s Tortilla Curtain aims to shed a light on the topic of Mexican immigrants in the United States. However, by having both a Mexican and an American woman share similar violent experiences with men, Boyle also places an emphasis on the less pronounced theme of sexual violence and discrimination against women, even in polar opposite realities. Early on, an invisible bond begins to form between the two main female characters, America, a recent Mexican immigrant and mother to be, and Kyra a successful white businessman. And while they never actually meet one another, as they endure and recover from their own personal problematic experiences with certain men, they are affected immensely by these events. America tries her best balance her new life of being an illegal, living in the ravine of Topanga Canyon with Candido, finding work and preparing for her baby to come.

One of the toughest adjustments, having been born to Mexican parents, is migrating to an unknown country where traditions and languages differ from one 's own. Though many pursue an education and strive for a better life, the purpose behind an immigrant, like myself, differs from the typical American. Immigrants strive for a life that was once impossible, going to school is not only to attain an education, but to better prove that we can also become successful regardless of our traditions and skin color. I lived in a country for over fifteen years, fearing deportation, not only losing a home, but potentially saying goodbye to a bright future. Although many feel empathy for Mexican-Americans, it is undeniably difficult to truly comprehend the immense trauma children and even adults undergo  upon experiencing racism and prejudice.

The short stories “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and the adapted version of “Big Gene” by William H. Cole both reveal the risks of expressing intellectual freedom. For one to have opinions and thoughts is to have intellectual freedom. In the event of two characters in particular however, stating their own right grants them issues. For Tessie Hutchinson of “The Lottery”, her point of view contributes to her grave fate. Big Gene faces discrimination from his wife and the rest of the black community as well as being further shunned by the white people he encounters.

The American Dream differs from person to person. Every dream consists of striving towards success for a better future. In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C Boyle delves into what the American Dream is to the middle class American family, the Mossbacher’s, and to the illegal immigrant family, the Rincon’s. Throughout the story, it becomes apparent that that the ability for the poverty-stricken Rincon family to achieve their dream is unrealistic. The American Dream is presented to be close to unobtainable to those who need it the most through the use of the coyote, the Arroyo Blanco community, and Cándido’s luck.

Children should not have to sacrifice so that they can have the life they want; individuals make sacrifices so children can have the life they deserve. The Glass Castle (2005), Jeannette Walls is the third child who is tall and skinny with red hair like her siblings Brian and Lori. The Walls family are the poorest family on their street. The day she will always remember is being burned by a fire while cooking hot dogs at age three and believed she has connection with a fire. She spent her whole life by dealing with skedaddle and living in the desert with careless parents (Rex Walls and Rose Mary Walls).

Leon, Leila’s stepfather in Bone, by Fae md ng, is an inventor and a collector. He entered America through Angel Island in San Francisco and assumed the identity of Grandpa Leong’s son in order to enter the country. He had to assume another identity, and keeps heaps of paper records to keep track of his names. Paper sons illegally entered the country by claiming relation to a current American citizen.

While reading the story, you can tell in the narrators’ tone that she feels rejected and excluded. She is not happy and I’m sure, just like her family, she wonders “why her?” She is rejected and never accepted for who she really is. She is different. She’s not like anyone else

The Story of the Vargas Family “Rosa Vargas’ kids are too many and too much. It’s not her fault, you know, except she is their mother and only one against so many” (Cisneros 29). In the novel The House on Mango Street, the author, Sandra Cisneros, touches on the many negative consequences of a single, impoverished mother raising an overwhelming amount of children. Poverty, discrimination, parental and neighborly responsibility, and respect are all issues and social forces that act upon the family; their presence or lack thereof cause several grisly occurrences to take place. Poverty was almost like a curse given to Rosa Vargas by her husband, who “left without even leaving a dollar for bologna or a note explaining how come” (29).

Have you ever had to eat a rice sandwich? If so, you might identify with a certain little girl named Esperanza. Esperanza Cordero is the main character of the book The House on Mango Street. Esperanza exhibits many strong character traits. Esperanza is a very timid, or shy girl.
