After a traumatic event, it is the people in your life that can help you recover. This relates to the book, Ordinary People, by Judith Guest. In the book, the main character Conrad goes through lots of suffering in his past, but shows his commitment to getting better. His brother dies, he becomes very depressed, tries to commit suicide, and goes in and out of a hospital. When he comes back from the hospital, the school year starts, and all he tries to do is get through it.

The concept of an American Dream has been around for a long time. The way people live their lives should be based on their passions, but many times people form false passions around objects and money. In The Professor’s House, by Willa Cather, a situation is given of a man who lives in a society built up by a 1920s American chase for money and success. This way of life eventually leads the Professor to become dissatisfied with his life despite achieving the perceived elements of success in 1920 America. Cather provides a solution to the problem the Professor faces inside the character Tom Outland.

Jana Hensel was thirteen when the Berlin wall fell, and in her memoir, After the Wall, she laments her youth and the sudden disappearance of the German Democratic-Republic that occurred almost overnight, especially in her memories. While Hensel finds nothing wrong with her now Western life, this memoir is dedicated towards people like her, who even now are straddling the line between the East German past and the West German future, and she discusses her loss of identity through her nostalgia, her transitions, and her parents. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a Fascinating Book and Movie “So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” (2). The book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, written by Stephen Chbosky, has a very bumpy storyline featuring a teenager named Charlie. Charlie starts out his freshman year with no friends, but he eventually he meets Sam and Patrick, two seniors at his school.

In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.

If we were able to make our children smarter, better looking, or more athletic, should we? Amy Sterling Casil had that exact scenario in mind when she wrote her short story, Perfect Stranger in 2006. Written in the first-person narrative that takes place in the distant future, Casil weaves a terrifying story of genetic alteration to “fix” our children’s flaws. Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.

For instance, maternal separation can negatively impact the hippocampus, I.e. working mother's. The lower the income a household has, the more stress it faces. Outstanding stress can have long-lasting negative effects on the hippocampus (1.).

In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Mr. Antolini gives Holden Caulfield advice when he is at one of his lowest points. Already aware of Holden’s mental state and position on school, he quotes Wilhelm Stekel, a psychoanalyst, “The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.” (Salinger 188). Although Holden fails to grasp Mr. Antolini’s message, the quote applies directly to his life because of his relationship with death as a result of his younger brother, Allie’s, death. Mr. Antolini uses this quote specifically because he wants Holden take a step back and try to live for a noble cause instead of resorting to death.

The film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, follows the story of Charlie as he braves through the challenges of freshman year. Throughout his first year, Charlies experiences friendship, alienation, love, mistakes, depression, acceptance of past events and newfound motivation. With the help of his love interest Sam, her stepbrother Patrick, and other likeminded individuals, Charlie is able to gain a sense of belonging and a boost of confidence that ensures his survival for the high school years yet to come (Halfon, Chbosky, 2012). This essay will delve into an in-depth analysis of adolescence from a socio-cultural perspective, using events from the film to provide examples and further enhance arguments. Furthermore, topics highlighting what I believe to be the most crucial aspects of adolescence will be discussed.

In Perks of Being a Wallflower, the novel introduces a character named Patrick, Patrick has suffered from bullying because he is unique; his sexuallity choices have made him stand out from the rest of the average crowd. He is also experiencing problems with his partner Brad. Brad and Patrick are in a relationship and Brad is not quite ready to come out . He also bullies Patrick to demonstrate that he has no connection with Patrick. Because of this, Patrick is hurt and does not know what to do to escape from the fact that Brad is not ready to go public with Patrick. Nevertheless, he consumes drugs to try to forget what he is going through.

Adolescence is a time of many changes including puberty, high school and finding one’s identity. Among the many changes in this period of development there are many new experiences combined with a greater amount of responsibility. Adolescence can be a difficult time for many people especially when trying to find out who they want to be. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a movie about a freshmen in high school who is going through experiences most kids his age do. Depression, suicide, peer pressure, first love, and the importance of friends and family are all elements in the development of an adolescent.
