Andrew Hamilton's Trial: The Zenger Trial

The John Peter Zenger case led to one of the rights mentioned in the Bill of Rights, the freedom of the press. Because of it, we are able to publish anything as long as it is true and does not demeaningly lower a person's reputation. The case involved these people: John Peter Zenger, the publisher of the New-York Weekly Journal, William Cosby, a governor who took Zenger to court, James DeLancey, the chief justice, James Alexander, William Smith, Andrew Hamilton John Peter Zenger was born to Nicolaus Eberhard Zenger, a school teacher, and Johanna Zenger in 1697. The Zengers immigrated to New York in 1710 with the German Palatines. Nicolaus died before he settled down, so John became an apprentice of William Bradford for 8 years before he was able to start his own printing press in 1725 with William Bradford.

On October 22, 1734 the Governor William Cosby ordered for the Public burning of some of John Peter Zenger 's journals entitled: The New York Weekly Journals. Since the Journal’s said so much about the affairs of the Governor, the journals became extremely popular and were purchased by the majority of people living in New York City. To the Governor this event was looked at as a disturbance of the peace. Zenger 's Journals were said to have contained false accusations against the governor and therefore were in violation of bringing contempt toward the government itself. Only the Journals 7, 47, 48, and 49 contained Libel.

In 1924, the nation was shocked by the news of a kidnapping and murder in Chicago, Illinois. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two nineteen-year-olds from wealthy families, confessed to the brutal killing of the fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks. These two young men did not show any sign of remorse. Right off the bat Nathan and Richard readily admitted that they had been strategizing for some time to commit the perfect crime. Their plan was ruined when Leopold left his eyeglasses at the scene, which eventually led to their arrest.

Establishing political rights for citizens in the American colonies was sometimes a rocky process. In 1735, John Peter Zenger helped establish the right of freedom of the press. Zenger was a German immigrant, who went to work for a newspaper called; The New York Weekly Journal. Zenger and the Newspaper attacked corrupt officials in New York, by printing articles that told the truth about the actions of the officials. Zenger’s articles printed in the newspaper, but soldiers were ordered to burn the newspaper in the public square.

In the 18th century America, a great division existed between the majority of blacks whom many were slaves, whites; men and women; and the upper and lower classes. New York City in 1741 had an economic decline intensified conflict between slaves involved in marketable activity and working-class white colonists who felt as if their jobs were threatened. These two types of people were competing against each which caused a chaos. To make things worse Britain had gone to was with Spain, and Spain promised the slaves for their freedom which made them turn their backs on Britain. This trial is similar to the Salem witch trial where they persecuted, many of who were slaves and a few poor white men.

Rubin Carter was a man whom which had to undergo punishment for crimes he did not commit that later lead to his involvement in others imprisonment. Carter was born on May 6, 1937, in Clifton, New Jersey. While growing up in Paterson, New Jersey at age 12 Carter was arrested after attacking a man with a Boy Scout Knife; The man was said to be a pdophile trying to molest one of Carter’s friends. Carter then joined the army after escaping from the Jamesburg State Home for Boys. There he began his training as a boxer, later winning two European light-welterweight championships.

Andrew Jackson should not have been court-martialed for seizing control of two Spanish forts. To begin, in 1818 General Andrew Jackson took control of two Spanish forts in Spanish East Florida without permission to do so. Jackson had only been ordered to end Seminole attacks on American land in Florida. Because of this, John Calhoun demanded that Andrew Jackson be court-martialed. President Adams ,however, disagreed.

This is an essay about an unforgettable time in history, which was known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. The Scopes Monkey Trial occurred in the 1920’s. During this time period most people believed in fundamentalism. Their belief was so strong that they created a law prohibiting the teaching of it in public schools, the law was known as the Butler Act . There was a guy named John Scopes who was a school teacher who willingly broke the Butler Act and decided to teach evolution one day.

These past few weeks I have read the book The Brass Verdict, written by Michael Connelly, and is the second installment in the Haller series. This marvelous book was published on October 14, 2008 and is 422 pages in length. The crime and fiction novel is based around the main character named Michael (Mickey) Haller, who is a defense attorney in the city of Los Angeles. Despite spending a year recovering from his wounds, as well as an addiction to painkillers from the previous installment, Mickey is requested to return to his career of law after an old defense attorney friend of his, Jerry Vincent, was murdered. He is called to take on Vincent's workload, which contains many cases, such as the notorious trial of Walter Elliott.

The Alger Hiss trial is recognizable throughout the entire United States as a trial that went down in history as the greatest. The trial involved Alger Hiss, a former State Department official who was convicted of perjury. Hiss was convicted of having decepted the jury under oath with his testimony about not being involved with the Soviet Union and the spying that was occurring within the United States government during World War 2. Hiss was caught in his own lies and was approximately in jail four years, yet he protested and fought for innocence in jail and after incarceration. The case against Hiss began in 1948, when Whittaker Chambers testified in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee, and to judge Samuel Kaufman,

It is the winter of 1944, and 84 Americans lie dead in s field by the town of Malmedy. These were the men of Battery B, who were slaughtered by the tank formation of Kampfgruppe Peiper. A man by the name of Joachim Peiper would later be tried for the death of these men and found guilty. He would later be lease on the premise that the trial was unfair. Though Joachim Peiper was released from his sentence, it is commonly known that Peiper was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent people and should have been punished.

As a whistleblower, he took it upon himself to write what was the truth, not just how it was meant to be perceived. The meaning in this is that what the people of the colonies were supposed to accept was that while many royal governors and judges were corrupt, the people of the land were not supposed to comment on that. They were supposed to simply accept this, regardless of whether it did them harm or not. John P. Zenger would have none of that. He saw these unethical men for what they were, and acted to expose them.

State vs. Mayfield Trial On December 27th, 1989, State Police Officer Edward Mayfield pulled over Donna Nugent to a shady area where he strangled her and threw her body off of a bridge. We don’t know why he pulled her over. He then proceeded to strangle her with a rope. I believe State Police Officer Edward Mayfield is guilty of murder in the first degree because he had and hid the murder weapon, pulling over specifically blonde women, and he changed the activity log.

There has been a lot of controversy of Andrew Jackson, whether he was a good president or one that destroyed the office of the presidency. However, Andrew Jackson is not guilty. He was a good president and should not be accused of degrading the office of the presidency. The first aspect which people accuse Andrew Jackson of wrong doing is what everyone calls The Spoils System. Andrew Jackson came into office, and designed a rotation.

Zehmer’s wife also testified about the event, adding that Zehmer told her that it was nothing but a joke. The rights of the case were that of common rights as the law judged an agreement between two parties exclusively from those expressions of their intentions which are communicated to them. The decision made for the Zehmers to perform a proper contract as the decree appeal was
