The Seminole legend “Two Hunters” introduced by Betty Mae Jumper presents the short story of two hunters on a hunting trip that highlights the consequences and life lessons of parsimonious hunting. In the Seminole legend by Betty Mae Jumper two hunters are on a trip to hunt and bring food back to their families, they embark on a journey to a big lake to gather the food necessary to support their families. One of the rules made known from the beginning of the legend is “ They only hunted when they had to, when the meat supply had run out”. (Jumper, pg.1). Meaning that the hunters only hunted and killed when the meat was needed or scarce.

In the book Black Elk Speaks the main character Black Elk started to tell his life story to the John G. Neihardt. Black Elk spoke of his early life and how “The Grandfathers” spoke to him telling him things like, take courage and he now has a cup that gives life. He then goes on and talks about his first major accomplishment which was killing a buffalo at the age of ten. Some of his childhood stories were told too. When he and other kids would play they would do things like, cut off the uppermost portion of a flagpole which resulted in Redcloud talking peace into the soldiers with words of wisdom.

In Growing Up Hard the writer Joe Wilkins talks about his life growing up on the Big Dry and living in Montana. He begins mentioning how his family had little money, so for food they depended on the animals on the land. He went into detail on how he helped his father and grandmother kill chickens for a Sunday dinner. When his father died, his grandfather taught him to hunt. The writer’s detailed description of his first hunt by himself from what he smelled to tasting dust helped me imagine what exactly went on at the time of the kill.

Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat is a non-fiction story about naturalist Farley Mowat, on an expedition to find out why so many caribou were being killed. Mowat’s superiors believed that wolves were killing the caribou. He spent almost a year investigating the wolves’ way of life focusing on a small pack made up of two males and a female with her pups. Mowat camped near their den and observed their eating and hunting habits. He observed that wolves rarely ate caribou and when they did, it was the weak and sick ones.

Walking through the woods on a peaceful, fall day, I stumble onto a herd of cotton tails. BANG! THUD! Dinner is served. Hunting has been argued to not be the best method practiced for controlling whitetail deer populations.

The first day if hunting we went into the Black Hills and did a lot if walking to find some deer. When we finally found some my brother was the first to shoot, since he picked the bigger straw out of three, which was how we decided who gets to shoot first, he missed. So I was next up and when we saw another deer it was really far away and it took my seven shits before I killed it. It wasn't even worth trying to kill it because it was just a fawn and I wasted seven shots killing it and that was the end of day one.
