The imperial mission and mindset of European’s drastically changed the course of history. Driven by their lust for money and power, the Europeans ransacked the lands of the Natives of America and devastated the people of Africa. At their encounter with these foreign bodies, to which they declared were less than their white, Christian selves, the Europeans saw nothing but economic opportunity in these lands. In the Americas, Natives were disregarded and killed, and their land stripped of all the bountiful resources it once provided. In Africa, the people were taken as slaves and treated with less respect than garbage. All these atrocities committed for one thing; profit. Money was the singular motivation for the Europeans, and with their blatant disregard for human life, …show more content…
The Europeans seen the Natives as purely savage creatures, and held little to no regard to their lives or well-being. There is a difference in the Europeans treatment towards the Africans. This is because the Europeans treated African slaves as goods. As told in J.B Romaigne’s journal, the Captain punished a fellow European for damaging the goods. “The Captain, seeing this, knocked the butcher flat upon the deck with a handspike. ‘I will teach you to keep your temper,’ said he, with an oath. ‘He was the best slave in the lot.’ (Romaigne, 593). The Captain did not care about the well-being of the African due to his kind heart, or his outstanding humanity, but rather because he was property and being damaged reduced the price he caught. This was the main difference in the European’s treatment towards these two groups of people. While both endured horrific treatment from the European’s, the Natives were beaten and killed so that the Europeans could prosper off their land and wealth, whereas the African people were beaten and reluctantly killed because they were taken in as
Africans were captured from africa to sell and trade as slaves. They were traded on the middle passage. They were shoved into slave ships, and had barely any room to move. Many of them died in the process. Though in 1700’s people began to realize it was cruel, and formed groups to stop it, though many people still agreed.
The colonist issued a counter-attack on the natives to rid the natives of the Region. The counter- attack killed hundreds of Natives. In my opinion, if the natives were considered barbaric for their reactions to the colonists’ intensive control of lands that was once theirs, than the colonist should also be considered barbaric. The colonist could have reacted more maturely about the situation. The colonist could have created a peace treaty with the natives instead of just counter-attacking them killing more people.

In the nineteenth century, Europeans had a desire to explore the boundless world in front of them and impressive transportational technology like steamboats to get them places. The desire to become “imperialists,” the desire to make an empire by conquering weaker countries, was also strengthened by a racist worldview that Africans and Asians needed the influence of Europe’s “civilized” society. So Europe set off, each nation vying for its own colonies, to wage wars, create treaties and expand their borders. It sounds glamorous on the surface, but in reality, millions of natives lost their lives in the desperate struggle to save their homeland from the greedy invaders.
There are many similarities and differences incorporated in West Africa’s and Southeast Asia’s patterns of interaction with Eurasian trade routes. In comparison, both used the silk road as a method of trade and commercial interaction, which let to both continents being able to assimilate the factors of gaining new resources and customs; second they both took advantage of the use of water for travel and this led through many Eurasian routes in order for them to culturally diffuse. However, Southeast Asian’s from the interaction of the Eurasian routes, was mainly or religious purposes; meanwhile Africa used the routes for profit through slave trade. The role of trading and commercial selling was a big deal in the interaction aspect of the Eurasian trade routes. And one main similarity between Southeast Asia and West Africa is the method of gaining new resources from either direction of the trade routes.
There are multiple examples of major changes in Africa that I could talk about for this exam. But being that I only need a few pages, I will focus on, for this exam, rise and end of the Malinke Empire and Songhay, the religious influences throughout Ethiopia, trading towns in the east of Africa, and most of the Iron Age societies. The examples of change will display how towns and kingdoms would come and go, the people settling there, or development of new productions and technology. I will then explain if the examples were of benefit or not to Africa’s continents for years to come.
By 1914, only Ethiopia and Liberia remained free from colonial rule and its damage in Africa (Doc 6). Those under European rule saw imperialists as rapacious exploiters. The demands and needs of Africans were not addressed by their ruling nation. Instead, their rights, liberties, and dignity were stripped to feed the greedy mouth of imperialist rule. Africans could not find the supposed benefits brought by Europeans to be worth the loss of their life and freedom.
The Europeans did not count Africans as civilized humans. They wanted to imperialise Africa to help. Document F states, “your new caught, sullen peoples, half devil and half child…” as a description of the African people. Every single country in Europe believed that African countries were extremely uncivilized “animals”.
There was no concern for the Africans' well being when it came to their treatment. The Europeans physically and mentally abused them. In document one it says “Their masters are making them work too hard and giving them too little to eat”. They were starved, making them too weak to work.
The treatment of African Americans and Native Americans in the 1800s was significantly different from each other. Despite both groups facing oppression, slavery, and discrimination, their experiences varied greatly. While Some might argue that African Americans deserved it and that Native Americans didn't rightfully own the land now known as the US. African and Native Americans were treated very poorly because of the difference in race, beliefs, and the wanting to claim discoveries that have already been found. The colonists feared an alliance between African and Native Americans if they realized that their real enemy was the English, who took native land and forced Africans to work it.
Colonialism and Imperialism affected our world both positively and negatively. On one hand, Imperialism has often been linked with racial segregation, manipulation, and hardship. On the other, it has been said that many colonial powers contributed much in terms of schools, roads, railways, and much more. Whether this time period was constructive or harmful, it has played a large part in shaping our lives today. European Imperialism started long before the 1800’s.
Although the Africans on the coast had never had direct contact with Europeans before, they had traded with the same people and probably knew of their existence. Because of the amount of deaths and other hardships the Europeans brought upon the Native Americans, they felt the worst of the Europeans need to expand their land and
The undeniable truth is that colonization did harm Africa through its unfair and violent practices. (Houngnikpo, 2006) Colonialism is responsible for the stagnation of the economy and technology in Africa. It is necessary to acknowledge that African economy has financed the so –called European capital. The capital is a result of robbery of land and labor of Africans. Colonialism transformed pre-colonial African structures and made them into structures that satisfy the economic needs of the imperialist world.
So in their minds they are the saviors and they don’t care about the horrors of what they have done, only what other people have done to them. The novel gives off a perception of what an inferior race is supposed to be like, they are supposed to be invaluable and useless in the eyes of Europeans, the “superior” race. The Africans are just relied upon to collect ivory and be slaves. Unfortunately, some of these racisms and ignorance of a superior and inferior race still exists
Although, the Colonization of European powers can be seen as a success, it was a calamity because many Native individuals were tortured, through military force to conquer land, and many Africans were enslaved in order to create the Americas. The tragedy of the European colonization of the Americas is such a crucial point in time, because this violence and hate still coincides with today’s generations. Many African and Native Americans are still being oppressed and taken advantage of.
