Is Cheerleading a Sport? Lots of people are constantly arguing about cheerleading being a sport. Cheerleaders practice about 2-3 hours 4 times a week until comp season and then usually everyday. Cheerleading should be recognized as an official sport because it has physical exertion and a specific skill set. Physical exertion is a main element to a sport being a sport. According to one article on the BFA Mercury, a sport is "An activity involving physical exertion..." (Hayden). Football players have to be strong and football is recognized as an official sport. In cheer, the cheerleaders have to be able to lift girls above their heads. Cheerleaders have to be tough and not give up; they have to persevere no matter what goes wrong. As mentioned in an article on TheLily, cheerleading is an "endurance sport..."(Mcshane). Therefore, cheerleading is a sport that cheerleaders can not give less than 100% at all times. …show more content…

In cheer, the cheerleaders have to be able to jump well, tumble, lift, and of course, have a lot of volume. According to an article on Varsity, "you have to jump high and well and great tumbling skills to impress judges..."(UNKNOWN). Cheerleaders work as long and as hard as they need to. As stated in an article on BFA Mercury, "endurance, strength, flexibility and balance"(Hayden). These cheerleaders give 110% no matter what and they will never give up. Some people claim that cheerleading is not considered a sport because they just sit on the sidelines and hype the crowd up. However, cheerleading has become its own sport with competitions and performances. Cheerleaders have a specific skill set and physical exertion. First, cheerleaders are strong. Second, they have lasting endurance. Therefore, by recognizing cheerleading as an official sport, it will give cheerleaders the respect they truly
