Firstly, the arming of students, faculty and staff should be prohibited because its unsafe. The debate on whether staff, faculty and students should carry firearms on campuses has been going for years now. Some colleges have debated that a law should be passed were staff and faculty should carry firearms on campus, but other colleges have dismissed this case because it is dangerous and unsafe. According to Jesus Villahermosa’s essay “Guns don’t belong in the Hands of Administrators, Professors, or Students” he states, “I agree that allowing guns on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” This statement is true because not everyone is capable to handle a gun or even use one. Also, according to the website The Campaign to Keep Guns off …show more content…
For this reason, security professionals believe that arming students shoot back would actually make matters worse in the extremely rare instances where mass shootings occur on campus.” This can create a bigger problem than the one before. Such accidental shootings are not accountable for which leaves families of innocent victims upset and frustrated because justice is never served. According to The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus “Despite the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois, college campuses are far safer than the communities that surround them. Ninety three percent of the violence against college students occurs off campus, where guns are widely available. To prevent future mass shootings, we must strengthen our gun laws to make it as hard as possible for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons.” If gun laws are strengthened, campus shootings might decrease and innocent lives will not be
Also, guns could accidentally go off if it is in the student backpack and it dropped and could hurt someone. According to Admiral William H. McRaven a Texas Chancellor, “We survivors do not think that it is a good idea to have guns on campus. There is no evidence that a bill like SB 11 would do anything to stop a mass shooting, but SB 11 would make the average day on campus more dangerous in an environment where students are dealing with failing grades, alcohol abuse, relationship problems” (McRaven). People should think about the future on how many people lives are taken because of guns on campus and should decrease the
But this much is clear: guns do nothing to help universities attain the kind of safety they desire and need -- the safety that enables intellectual and political exploration. Guns by their very nature dampen speech -- they chasten it. Colleges simply cannot tolerate
Every year in the United States, we are saddened by the news of more mass shootings. Whether it takes place in a school or public area, these shootings are both disastrous and mortifying. In 1990, congress passed and the president signed the gun-free school Zone Act (“National Crime Prevention Council” 1). This law was developed to keep students and staff safe from guns and other weapons. In a survey done by the National school safety center in 2001, more than 60 percent of high school boys and 15 percent of middle school boys said they could get a gun if they wanted to (“Texas Crime Prevention”1).
A constitutional right: Carrying firearms on college campuses The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Due to the alarming increase of mass shootings and violence, which have occurred on colleges nationwide, many students, staff, and pro-gun activist have brought attention to the right of allowing concealed firearms on campus. Like other law abiding American citizens, they believe that they are entitled to protect their persons freely without their rights, which have been beautifully bestowed to them by the U.S. Constitution, to be limited or infringed upon. I believe that firearms should be allowed on college campuses.
On the other hand, people for gun rights claim guns on campus are what students need to keep themselves safe. The reasons for this are: the right to bear arms, being able to avoid shootings, and also gives the individual a chance to fight back. They believe perpetrators choose to strike a campus because it’s a venerable place in which there is a “no guns” policy. According to Timothy Wheeler, he mentioned shooters “…were drawn to the soft target a school offers
According to Armed Capuses.org, “The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses”. The controversy that surrounds the concealed carry on college campuses vary from negative comments to positive comments. The focus should not be would weapons make people feel uncomfortable like most articles are introducing. The main focus
However, for some people, the sight of an open gun will not make them feel safe and uneasy. By allowing open carry, you are ensuring trust amongst your peers and those around you to protect you with your life; however, relying on a stranger to protect your life is a gamble and one that several people are not will to make. Finally, open carry on school campuses will lead to more violence. As reported in various school shootings, such the shooting in Albemarle High School in North Carolina on September 2014, some shootings were caused by arguments between two students. The incident, and several others public shooting incidents, would have been avoided if the shooter did not have a weapon on his person and if the country had more strict gun control laws.
The various challenges that are inherent in campus life include issues of alcohol and drug abuse, social obstacles, and stress. Adding guns to such an environment is the perfect ingredient for an explosive environment that may increase the safety risk to students and everyone else within the campus. There will be an increase in accidental shootings while the mere presence of firearms in the environment might lead to conflicts among students that may escalate to levels where people are killed (Skorton, & Altshuler, 2013). Even if it is the last option, guns should never be placed at the hands of emotionally volatile young persons such as college students. Doing so will only increase the probability of lethal and near-lethal outcomes from the behaviors that manifests themselves in the context of such
So far, 9 states, including WIsconsin and Kansas, allow guns on school campuses. With all of these school shootings and bombings happening everywhere, why shouldn’t we arm teachers to protect the students in case of anything happening like this? Things like these happen because there is little to no protection in schools. By training and certifying teachers to help protect the kids, schools could become safer places for them. Of course, not everyone would agree upon arming teachers, but if those people look at what potential good can come out of it, then they can realize that by doing this, schools would be safer for them and their children.
Gun control has been one of the top issues facing our country for quite some time. Recently in Texas, a bill called SB11 has been passed that allows for concealed carry of licensed weapons on campuses of higher education. College kids are stressed about balancing their social life, maintaining a good GPA, and getting enough sleep to keep themselves sane. Now those same kids are also carrying around killing machines in their back pockets. Although people believe that this new law is protecting schools from more mass shootings, I believe that allowing concealed carry on the college campus is a bad plan of action because people of that age don 't know how to react in a situation where a gun could be needed, people will abuse their "gun-rights" powers, and it has the potential to cause even more outbreaks of school shootings.
Why Not Conceal Carry? On April 16, 2007, 32 people were murdered and another 23 were wounded, either by Seung-Hui Cho, the man doing the killing, or by jumping out of windows to escape him. That day Seung-Hui Cho used a Glock 19 and a Walther P22 to commit the second deadliest shootout in US history. While many people, like Josh Sugarmann and his Concealed Carry Killers report would have one believe that allowing people to conceal carry on campus would of made things worse, but I believe just the opposite.
To start off, having staff members and teachers walking around school with guns will put the school in far more danger that we already are. Teachers enter their career to teach children, as police officers choose to protect citizens by force if necessary. No amount of training will be enough for a teachers to grab their gun and answer to a mass shooting, instead one day the teacher may be out of the class or distracted, and the student might end up taking the gun and do something dumb with it, his
26 Oct. 2015. This article talks about the supporters and non-supporters of gun control and what all of it could lead too. It talks about our Second Amendment rights and how the Democrats as well as The Republicans wanted to make it harder for the mentally ill to get firearms in their hands. They would increase the funding for the prosecutions and they would even get more strict on the control of gun trafficking. This article also states that The Democrats were very quick to blame The Republicans for the broken gun laws.
But even if we do this does not mean that more deaths will not occur as a result of this, in the heat of the moment people are not going to be thinking about what is the safest thing to do they are just going to shoot. So it is not safe at all to allow any type of guns in the college campus. Lastly, permitting guns in the college campus in very unsafe thing to do. If we allow guns in college, students in the dorms might steal it and commit even more violence. It is very possible that gun can go off by accident.
Have you ever been in a situation in which you’ve felt as if your life was at risk? Throughout the country there have been multiple reports of violence taking place on college campuses. College students can be seen as a relatively easy target, due to the mere fact that in almost all cases, they are defenseless. This is an issue that is guaranteed to recur considering the fact that a majority of college campuses do not permit weapons. Students have a right to defend themselves just like every other citizen, however college campuses implemented these nonsensical rules that almost completely take away students rights, and causes them to become vulnerable.
