Shift working According to the European Union (EU) Survey on Working Conditions , carried out in 2000 in the 15 EU countries, only 24% of the working population (27% of employed and 8% of self-employed workers) are now engaged in the so-called ‘normal’ or ‘standard’ day work, that is between 7.30-8.00 and 17.00 – 18.00 Monday to Friday and 18.8% of workers are involved in shift work that includes night work (Costa 2003). This means that the majority of the working population is engaged in shift work, night work, part time work, varying working hours, weekend work. These trends are likely to continue as economic demands, market globalization and societal changes push us into a 24 hour society. Most studies and reports that refer to shift …show more content…
Sleep disturbance is a major complaint among shift workers. Fatigue, poor sleep, difficulty falling asleep, insomnia, wakefulness when trying to sleep, irritability, poor concentration are all symptoms of shift lag syndrome or shift worker syndrome. There has been much research done on the effects of sleep, performance and accidents comparing shift workers with day workers. Shift workers invariably report more sleep disturbance than day workers (Åkerstedt 2003) There is some evidence to suggest that rotating shifts clockwise every 2 weeks are better tolerated. Employees rotating between morning and afternoon shifts have greater sleep difficulties than daytime workers, more difficulties initiating sleep and night or shift workers also have a shorter duration sleep. Also there is more daytime sleepiness in rotating shift workers and night workers. (Ohayon et al. 2002) Gastrointestinal Disorders are more common in shift workers than day workers. They often complain of abdominal pain and alterations in bowel habit such as diarrhoea and constipation. (Saberi and Moravveji …show more content…
A Japanese study has shown an increased prevalence of peptic and duodenal ulcers in shift workers compared to day workers (Segawa et al. 1987). Also the ulcerogenic potential of H pylori infection increases in shift work and should be considered a risk factor for duodenal ulcer disease in infected shift workers. Treating infected workers in the this high risk group may reduce the risk of ulcer disease (Pietroiusti et al. 2006) Cardiovascular disease: There is strong evidence linking cardiovascular disease and shift work (Knutsson 2003). Many studies have been conducted and an important review of 17 studies looking at shift work and cardiovascular disease in 1999 found that there is a 40% increased risk of cardiovascular disease in shift workers compared to day workers (Bøggild and Knutsson 1999). Some studies suggest an increase in cardiovascular risk factors in shift workers such as raised cholesterol and triglyceride levels (Romon et al. 1992), however the exact causal link or mechanism are still under investigation.
Research from The Balance suggests that work hours and anxiety contribute to the decline of officers health. Because their occupation already threatens their life, it makes the unknown risks much more stressful. Likewise, their irregular work hours, specifically unplanned shifts, promote unhealthy sleeping schedules which can cause officers to be tired on the job. All of these problems began to produce awful exercise and eating patterns which become hard for deputies to cope with while working (Roufa). Considering the fact that Jerome maintained two other jobs, five children, and other health issues at the same time, these stresses became extremely prevalent for him.
I can 't imagine feeling tired after an 18-hour day, as my job is enormous fun. As much as I enjoy my work in
Working on a farm, getting hardly any sleep is probably not the job you would want. Well if you think about it, this job was what we called slavery. We have men getting up in the morning to go get work done outside on the farm. Women in the kitchen, cleaning and cooking. These human beings got treated horribly and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
According to the US Federal Aviation Authority, fatigue can be defined as a “condition characterized by increased discomfort with and lessened capacity for work, reduced work efficiency, loss of energy or capacity to respond to stimulation, and is usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness.” Due to the increasing demand for air travel the services has to run 24 hours 7 days basis in the whole year making the employees working in the aviation services to perform long duty days, circadian disruptions from night flying or time zone changes scheduling change, work under pressure in dynamic environments causing them to bear higher stress level. These irregular work schedules and higher stress levels may lead to deterioration of the physical and mental stamina causing fatigue. Aviation related organizations such as ICAO IATA has performed different researches to identify the causes for fatigue, symptoms of fatigue and determined directives to prevent fatigue.
Strauss discusses the issues with a 40 hour five day work week as it relates to sleep disorders. The issues surrounding five day work week cost employers $2000 of production annually for each worker. Flexible work hours keep people happier and healthier while increasing productivity for there employers. Europe has begun to implement these new ways with policy. The eight hour work day in the U.S. started in 1876 with congress passing a law for federal workers and there work day structure.
The Effects of Working the Night Shift, written by Julia Tortorice, is an article about it affects health or nurses and how it affects their families. The author also mentions that currently acts are pending to improve staffing and the overall health of nurses. The author successfully uses humor and the logical appeal of pathos to make it easier to understand. She also gives advice of what a nurse can do which will help me brain storm my solutions in my paper. For instance, Tortorice (2014) says, “Studies have suggested that napping nurses suffer from less fatigue than non-napping nurses” (p. 3).
If a nurse has not had adequate sleep, they will be putting themselves and their patients at risk. "The number of errors made by nurses increases when nurses work more than 12 hours in a shift or more than 40 hours per week (Lally, 2009). Nurses also play an important role in tracking down and correcting medical errors, "nurses may be the first and sometimes last line of defense in preventing errors before they reach the patient" (Lally, 2010). When sleep deprived your memory and cognitive abilities aren't functioning as normal, and as a nurse you need these skills functioning properly and quickly. Motor vehicle accidents are also a terrible risk they could take after working those long hours.
Sometimes overworking and neglecting health can become a serious issue for them. They are more prone to chronic diseases and digestion related problems. Health Tip Eat foods such as fish, seeds, nuts and green vegetables to maintain a healthy diet. Also, meditate for few minutes daily to remove work related
I thought about nursing burnout through watching the video by speaker Madelyn Blaire. Burnout is categorized as physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Burnout can lead to dulled emotions and detachment. I wonder why nurses are burning out.
State Thesis & Main Points: Having trouble sleeping can cause you not to function as efficiently, but there are ways to help
Sleep deprivation is the lack of sleep needed to function to full potential. While college is known for staying up all night, and cramming for exams, this term of sleep deprivation is starting to take a serious toll. Over the years the sleeping patterns of students attending college and universities has changed dramatically. Studies show that as time goes on the average night of sleep students are getting is decreasing drastically (Jensen, 2003). The way students are falling into this lack of sleep are by forming an irregular sleep-wake cycle, which consists of getting little to no sleep during the week, then on weekends catching up on all the missed sleep.
Nurses fatigue is growing problem nurse face each day in the healthcare environment, and he can be caused by long hours, sleep deprivation, and possibly by accepting extra assignments can be dangerous for both nurses and patient. These inadequacies can result in major implications for the health and safety of registered nurses and can compromise patient care which can lead to fatalities. (American Nurses Association, 2014). In my experience, being fatigued from working much 12-hour shifts consecutively was very difficult as I felt extremely tired, resulting in lack of focus, missing important details during the handing over the process with impaired cognitive functioning. This I found was detrimental to the patients and myself as it impedes quality and has a deleterious effect on patient safety.
INTRODUCTION Adapted from the course module notes, there are two categories of theories and techniques in job design to motivate employees: 1. Content theories by Maslow, McClelland, Herzberg and Alderfer. 2. Process theories such as Job Rotation, Job Enlargement and Enrichment; Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, The Hackman and Oldham Model and Empowerment.
World had make transformation for working time or schedule by producing “work flexible schedule”. Many people like the new transformation. This is because people can make a dual income at the same time. There are many people in moderate class so they need to get a more job to support their-self or family. To increase their income, they need to get two jobs.
INTRODUCTION Today, most of the employees when they want to choose jobs, they are not only looking on how much salaries alone, instead they explore other benefits that jobs can offer to them. One of the benefits that employee will look for is does the job they want to apply offers flexibility especially in terms of work schedule. This is because many employee already have other demanding commitments and the recent changes in the nature of work, along with the introduction of new technologies (cell phones, email and other means of electronic communication) have led to many employees struggling to balance roles in their work and personal lives (Hayman, 2009; Hobsor, Delunas & Kelsic, 2001). Therefore, employees hope to get a job that allows them to do other commitments without disrupting their commitment to work.
