Student loan debt loads have been spiraling, doubling over the last decade, and the enrollment rates of young people from lower socio-economic groups are rising far slower than middle and upper groups. Governments must recognize the renewed public investment in post secondary education is an economic and social imperative. 6.7 million borrowers in repayment mode are delinquent (Snider 1). The sad fact is that many lenders aren't exactly incentivized to work with borrowers. Unlike all other forms of debt, student loans can't be discharged in bankruptcy. Forgiveness programs can be lifesavers for borrowers drowning in student loan debt (Snider 1). However, jobs for recent grads are harder to find and salaries are lower, but that won't last forever; in spite of all of this, the data make clear that getting a college education is still a good idea. College graduates earn more and are more likely to have a job in the first place, and is especially important for some Americans (Webley 2). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for those with only some college and more than 10 percent for those with just a high school degree, but it was 5.4 percent …show more content…

As the problem continues to grow it becomes more and more critical to find a solution to help the well being of everyone in the nation, student or

In USA Today’s article by Sandra Block and Christine Dugas titled “Five Proposals to Solve $1 Trillion College Loan Crisis,” the authors mention five ways to solve the student debt crisis in America, illustrating things like Bankruptcy reform, loan forgiveness, increasing federal pell grants, and the education of borrowers. Evaluating this article, it provides an informative view on the solution of student debt, and overall expresses many different spectrums on ways we can solve this social problem. The five ways to solve this problems
With student loan debt on the rise across the United States of America, measures must be taken to address the issue of millions of Americans facing tens of thousands of dollars in debt immediately after finishing college. According to Robert Applebaum, a man that began a petition for the United States federal government to offer a one time deal of forgiving all student loans, to forgive these loans is a necessity and may prove to boost the economy. In Kayla Webley’s “Is Forgiving Student Loan Debt a Good Idea?”, the journalist and correspondent for Times magazine takes a long hard look at Applebaum’s proposal and just how forgiving the student loan debt is likely to play out. Throughout her article, Webley dissects the argument for forgiving
As we read “A Lifetime of Student Debt? Not Likely” we learn that the title is correct if student loans are used wisely. Many don’t pay attention to the debt they are building. Whether it is important for them to go to a certain school, or to always be partying, students will quickly use all the money they have. For some reason, when they find out how much they owe, they are shocked.
“Generation Debt” by Alethea Spiridon is an argumentative essay that outlines the harsh reality of student loans. The author examines the consequences of student loans as well the reasons higher education should not come as an expense to the individual pursuing it. In the current job market a post-secondary degree is a prerequisite for almost any profession and the sad reality is that this costly degree is not a guarantee of future wealth. The author effectively explains why treating education like a luxury good can impoverish everyone, and outlines ways student debt can burden graduates’ lives. However, she fails to examine the reasons student loans can be advantageous, and this is problematic because there are several missing benefits including manageable reimbursement options, lower interest rates, as well as student friendly terms and conditions when compared to a standard loan.
Student debt is the nightmare that many people live with on a daily basis. It is nearly ironic how people use education as a potential ticket that hopefully will bring financial stability, along with many other things, in the future; yet, people are graduating with high amounts of student debt under their name that take years to repay. Now that the nation’s student loan debt have surpassed 1.4 trillion dollars, policy-makers are extremely concerned. From 2008 to 2012, there was a .2 million increase of students graduating with debt, meaning that ever since, there are more than 1.3 million people with student debt (Student Loan Hero). I think that student loan debt is a problem in the United States.
According to the last recording of student loan debt, the total amount of the United States student loan debt is roughly one and a half trillion dollars (A look at…). Statistics like these present the urgent need to resolve the major financial issue of student loan debt. Solutions have been given by many people to solve this issue but most solutions fail. The main reason behind student loan debt is falling to far into debt to the point where it is almost impossible to come back. The origin behind all of this is a lack of a student loan amount cap.
Author, Sandy Baum writes about how student debt affects individuals in the book Student Debt: Rhetoric and Realities of Higher Education Financing. “It seems quite clear that student debt has generated serious harm to some individuals” (Baum 70). In stating this, most people do not want to go to school because they believe
However, even after deciding to go to college with the assistance of scholarships and financial aid, the overwhelming amount of student loan debt that one accumulates throughout his or her four years of college follows them throughout adulthood. The fact that student loan debt accumulates the biggest source of debt for most people is prevalent (Federal Reserve). Because of this massive socioeconomic obstacle in between high school graduates and college education, many young people cease their education after high
The student loan issues are causing huge problems on both students and society it seems clear enough that students are borrowing a lot of student debt, and they are failing on that debt and aren’t capable of paying it back and that is destroying their ability and threatening their ability to access any more credit in the future. The approaches students are taking to a student loan debt collection are fraught with many problems, including bad recovery tactics and failing on making repayments on the debt. There is no escaping the fact that the cost of college tuition is on the rise and it’s not declining, and that is making it more difficult for students to obtain a degree which is really important to acquire to be able to function in today’s
Most of my friends who are currently in college have between 5000$-20.000$ in federal and private loans. In many cases, besides for the loans, students have to work and study at the same time, which results in a stressful life for the student. In fact, many students are not able to finish their education because, since they can’t afford it, they have to work over their studies. Out of all the possible reasons to drop out of college, “the No. 1 reason many young adults drop out of college is an inability to juggle school and work” (Johnson). Finishing college is the most decisive forecaster of prosperity in the workforce and the inconsistency in college completion between children of rich and poor families duplicated since the late 1980s (McGlynn 55).
The tuition and cost of college is detrimental to thousands of families across the country and brings student debt to future graduates. Some students have seen their debt climb over $30,000. Friedman writes, “The average student in the Class of 2016 has $37,172 in student loan debt…” (Friedman). With the debts being over the average income for single people households, college has transformed from a benefit to a burden. Young adults not only have to worry about their education but also paying for the next semester or years of college ahead of them.
Many people dream of a life filled with riches, but that dream is hard to obtain without a college degree. It is somewhat ironic how people dream of being a successful student and going to college but the cost of tuition turns that dream into a horrible nightmare. It is not a shock to most people when they that college tuition is expensive, but in the past few years it has increased to an all-time high. Lower and middle class students have now begun to realize that college tuition is holding them away from their dreams. Even though college tuition could provide opportunities for job creation and economic growth, tuition is not affordable for the average American household which in effect, prohibits students from taking opportunities like going to college in the first place.
Loans allow receiving a college education seem like a smoother process considering that such a hefty amount to pay is divided so that it can be paid for in moderation. Despite the fact that it’s split into many payments, it’s still a large quantity all in all so unless indebted students aim for high income jobs, there would many years of difficulty to come after college. For this reason, undergraduates make it their goal to go after jobs which would prevent them from being constantly pressured to pay off debt. Thus, student debt is both a crisis and a reason to encourage persistence towards greater ambitions (Hillman, 41). It is a tremendous thing when a student seeks to be financially comfortable or even rich in the future but not when it is for the wrong reasons.
Student loans have always seem to be a controversial topic. Many people are in agreement and disagreement over the opportunity to student loans. Student loans can be a great advantage to many students, but it can also drown them in an immense debt, that will follow them for many years. The more we analyze this perspective, we are able to distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of student loans. There is a variety of perspectives on student loans, some involving annual salaries, interest rates, and commodity.
The student debt crisis has remained static for many years, and our future relies on the young people, like myself, to find solutions to our problems in education
