28th Amendment: Gun Control

The subject of gun control is hotly debated not only by the media and special interest groups but also by law enforcement agencies, and ordinary citizens alike. Some feel that since the Second Amendment was written before the advent of modern firearms that it is outdated. Others believe that it is an inalienable right that must be preserved in order for Americans to remain a free people. The Second Amendment states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. ”(archives.gov)

Our group’s job was to propose a 28th Amendment to the constitution by making changes to article I section 8 and article II section 2 of the constitution. Article I section 8 of the constitution states that the congress has the power to declare war and raise and support armies. Article II Section 2 states that the president shall be the commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States. We proposed that the Congress should have the option to elect a new commander in chief in case of an emergency or if the Congress feels that the president is not doing a decent job with the situation. We also proposed that the president should have the option to withdraw from the commander in chief position if there is an emergency in the country

When the original people wrote the amendments they had no clue the advancement of guns that would come in the future ( ). In the end, no guns should be carried around like

Making guns unavailable is only going to cause more crime. Criminals will not stop trying to get their hands on them, illegal or not. The government should not be able to take away our “freedoms”; gun control is one of them. Choosing to remove our weapons will only make our America a more hostile environment to live.

The Bill of Rights is something the American people hold close to them, especially their right to bear arms. Recently there has been a lot of debate over implementing gun regulations without infringing on the rights of the people. While a position of this is expressed in Wayne LaPierre’s “Universal Background Checks Mean Gun Registration, Gun Bans and Confiscation”, Jeffrey Toobin’s “So You Think You Know the Second Amendment” provides a more valid position evaluating the issue of gun control. Universal background checks are a big discussion lately in our country’s current climate.

Each year about 4.5 million firearms, including approximately 2 million handguns, are sold in the United States.” More than 30,000 U.S. citizens are killed by firearms every year and about 30 people are shot and murder everyday. By changing this amendment this will lower the death rate by firearms in America. The 26th amendment does not limit younger people's freedom whoever it does hold them from expressing who they think should be president.

The Second Amendment was never actually intended for everyday citizens. In the writing of the amendment it states militia meaning that it was only intended for them to bear arms. Citizens have found easy access to the weapons that they use in their shootings. Therefore, guns are put into the wrong hands, which means gun regulations should be stricter and allow a more detailed background check with mental health evaluations. There have been gun purchases where there has been a flaw in the background check system, allowing mentally ill or irresponsible people to obtain guns.

Complete gun control for rifles is irrational, unconstitutional and hard to implement. The restriction of rifles in the united states is irrational due to crime statistics from the FBI. The FBI homicide statistics state that in 2016 there were 11,004 firearm homicide but only 374 of those were performed with rifles vs the 7,105 performed handguns. These statistics show that the handguns were used in 64% of homicides vs rifles being used in 3% yet rifles get more negative news coverage. The fact of complete gun control for rifles is unconstitutional because the 2nd amendment is intended for the american people to be able to defend themselves from a tyrannical government.

During this time, the British troops were still attempting to overtake the new land, one of the ways they did this was by attempting to take the people’s guns. There was still reason to believe that British would still attack the new country and the United States did not have a real army, so any military action needed to be responded to by

Statistics show that comparable to other democratic nations the United states has a higher proportion of gun related violent incidents than those states where gun control legislation has been adopted. An example would be the case of the United Kingdom, which had approximately 2,261 Violence Against the Person (VAP) Offences involving firearms, including low velocity Air weapons in 2015/16 . If this is then compared to the United States which had, in the same period, 9,616 gun related murders and a million VAP offences that did not end in a fatality, then it can be argued that the NRA’s outdated mantra is illogical . There are many further problems with the NRA argument that can be identified in the modern era. , but the main issue would be the NRA’s reasons for the existence of the Amendment.

The Second Amendment to the Constitution, which concerns the right to bear arms, is always a hot-button issue, especially during election season. Gun rights and gun control groups alike have been lobbying Congress for decades to craft legislation in their respective favors. While many citizens think gun be banned, there is a huge among of people who still disagree. Whether gun should be prohibited or not it is still mystery to American. Proponents of more gun control laws state that the Second Amendment intended for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed; and that a majority of Americans, including gun owners, support new gun restrictions.

Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Having gun control would help lessen the deaths by firearms in the country for a variety of reasons.

The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.

There is an estimation that about half of the households in the United States owns at least one gun. As such many people can have access to guns, including children and other family members. Many school based attacks involve young people carrying guns owned by their parents and going on a rage through schools and other places. Similarly, the ease of acquiring guns has led to vulnerable deaths of people across the country. Moreover, this leads obsessed people to escape their frustrations on minorities by murdering and threatening them.

To begin with, the second amendment of the US constitution gives citizens the right to carry or possess a gun. As a result, gun violence in America has increased drastically over the years due to guns being utilised in a reprehensible manner and people getting wedged in the crossfire, hence why stringent law enforcements need to be put in place regarding guns in the US. “Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms; in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally”.
