Molly Guptill Manning would argue that censoring a book is equivalent to burning it to ashes. Manning uses her own book, When Books Went to War, to convey an argument against Title V, an amendment to the 1944 Soldier Voting Bill created by Robert A. Taft that “placed restrictions on amusements distributed to the servicemen, including books, so long as they were provided by the government and made some reference to politics” (Manning, 2014, p. 135). The eighth chapter titled: “Censorship and FDR’s F---th T—m”, chronicles the proposal of Title V, its consequences, and its ultimate elimination. Once Title V was approved, it led to limitations of Armed Service Editions, books sent to soldiers, and resulted in a great deal of controversial censorship. When critically analyzing the text, a few errors in reasoning are found, however, Manning’s manipulation of the audience is completely overshadowed by her rock solid logical argument. Eve is lacking credibility and character because she is not an established author. Eve is not a credible author because she is a freelance writer. Eve does not have good credibility because she blogs and contributes to an opinion magazine and website.
Therefore, this weakness does not detract from his strong use of appeals, ethos, and his persuasive use of logos. Essentially, Sloan delivers an effective argument for his readers through his use of ethos and logos, aside from what might be considered weak pathos. For his audience of everyone, his use of ethos and logos are strong, since he is a highly educated, and a critical thinker that uses logos very effectively. The dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, and the political cartoon “Control of Internet Speech” although created in different times have a large amount of similarities regarding the rhetorical devices and themes used. Multiple editions of Fahrenheit 451 have been published throughout the years, however the version this essay will be referring to was published in June, 2013. The book revolves around Guy Montag, a fireman living in a futuristic and technologically advanced world where freedom of knowledge is censored. Forbidding books is a form of censorship(suppression of information) because books are platforms for authors to share their thoughts and readers to gain knowledge. This is achieved through forbidding books and having firemen burn those that are found.
It is sometimes difficult for individuals to settle the discrepancy between truth and illusion, and consequently they drive others away, by shutting down. Mrs. Ross, in The Wars by Timothy Findley, is seen as brittle while she is attending church, and cannot deal with the cruel reality of the war and therefore segregates herself from the truth by blacking it out. As a result, she loses her eyesight, and never gets to solve the clash between her awareness of reality and the actuality of the world. She hides behind a veil, and her glasses to distance herself from reality. Mrs. Davenport has to wheel her around in Rowena’s chair to keep her awake, so she doesn’t harbour up subconscious feeling within her dreams, which she is unable to deal with.
