Equality is something people want till people actually have it. Equality often limits a person’s abilities and disables to do something for themselves or inspire themselves. Equality's, the main character in the book Anthem, the primary motivation is proving that he is smart enough to become a scholar. Equality has a right to be motivated in this way since he believes that he can help the society so he is giving into the collectivism. I think that if everyone was motivated in this way, there would be a more progressive society where people sought to improve themselves and society at the same time. Equality's motivation is to prove that he bears the same intelligence that the scholars bear to the Home of Vocations. We can see that is his primary motivation for him making the light bulb. He spent so much time and effort making …show more content…
If everyone was motivated and inspired the same way today, the world and people would be much different in terms of ideas and innovation. We, as people, wouldn’t have to worry about a problem because it would be solved almost immediately since everyone is motivated to seek answers including myself so someone wouldn’t be dependent on someone else for their work or problems. At the same time, while people solving their own problems and were becoming independent, people would also, as a reaction, help the world. Sometimes, like Equality, when you are trying to solve your own problems, you end up solving other peoples’. Equality was trying to prove that he was smart enough to be in the Home of Scholars and through that motivation, he invented light electricity that could help millions of others. People in the world would also be largely progressive in the terms that they would have more accelerated progress and innovation compared to today’s world since everyone's mind would work to make themselves and the society
In Ayn Rand's story Anthem, the protagonist Equality 7-2521 has a power unlike no other within their collectivist society. One day when Equality was working as a street sweeper, he finds an old abandoned underground railroad tunnel from the Unmentionable Times long ago. This is where he conducts his experiments that fill him with pride and joy. Equality dreams how his new invention that he brought into existence can change the world, but helping mankind is not his true motivation behind his passion to create. Throughout the story, Equality's true motivation is him trying to find his inner self and his identity as an individual.
In the book, “Anthem” by Ayn Rand she explores many different topics about our daily life as human beings. One of the characters she uses to explore these topics is a young man named Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 is a young man that was raised in a dystopian society on which all men must strive to be equal, but Equality is different from them. He’s got different motivations from the rest of the men that he has grown with. He’s curious about the world around him and wants to know how everything works.
Based on a man named Equality 7-2521, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, tells his story as a captive. He was not ordinary like everyone else but was very different in many aspects. He was said to be cursed due to his great height, his intelligence, and his forever wandering mind. Equality 7-2521 was smarter than the other students he learned with. According to the Councils over the captives, everyone should be one or in unity.
Equality within the similar actions indicates in the novella Anthem, how his focus being on ways of changing his city and the thought process the council arranges for the city’s structure. Throughout the novella Equality begins putting himself first and letting his ego drive
Equality finds a tunnel that he thinks is from the “unmentionable times” is his society while he was street sweeping. He goes down in it and finds smooth hard surfaces which I inferred to be glass, in Anthem all objects are raw materials so it is not possible for there to be glass unless the council was hiding the tunnel so no one could find it. He returns to the house of street sweepers late and the council asks where he has been. He refuses to tell them so he gets taken somewhere by the council and they try to whip the information out of him. “ A grill, a grill, a grill” Equality says.
Smarter than any of his other brothers, Equality rapidly starts to realize what his cities council is trying to do to take away his rights as a human being. This short novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, a man by the name of Equality 7-2521 was a more intelligent than his other brothers in the community, and he was not content with sitting around letting the council try to brainwash everyone else, so he breaks several laws in the process of trying to discover new things that the council is trying to hide from him and his brothers. The council was not aware of these things and they were not going to let him try to do anything against them. To try to prevent anything detrimental from happening, they assigned him the job as a street sweeper where he couldn’t use any of his quick-witted mind against them
“Anthem”by Ayn Rand takes us on a journey through the eyes of a young man named Equality 72521 living in the future in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism and where all decisions are made by committee the Council. Equality 72521 struggles immediately from the beginning of the story because he is “cursed” by being intelligent and inquisitive and having individual thought, which is against the society in which he lives in. Growing up as a young boy, his dream is to become a scientist and work on new discoveries and inventions. Instead, at fifteen years old, Equality 72521 is assigned by the Council to a menial job of being a street sweeper. His daytoday life is very routine and mundane and he rebels against this life and starts conducting research in a secret tunnel where he discovers and recreates electricity.
Equality was a creator his mind had driven him to science he had his own mind, his own strength, and his own courage he was independent, he was brighter than the rest. Standing alone in a modern world ruled by the suppressed government he faced the world alone. In a world where being intellectual was a severe sin he possessed gifts unlike no other that were despised by the government: intellectual and psychological strength. In a world where free will was not allowed and any form of diversity was punished by the authorities. Here we find Equality on a path of self-discovery and independence.
Anthem is a book that makes oneself contemplate the future and what evils are bestowed upon it. In this novel, the reader is caught in the life of Equality. Equality’s life is placed in the future, where the feared reality of communism has conquered all but the souls of few weary men. Equality is one of those few men who have a light that is invulnerable to a ravaging wind. Equality’s time captive before his extraordinary escape has taken a toll on his body and mind and now at the end of his journey forces him to question whether the decisions he’s made are full of sin or teeming with righteousness.
Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 is creating electricity. Knowing his invention of light would impact mankind, he did it out of spite of doing what he loved, science. Also, making people happy and sharing his ideas with the world. Equality’s primary motivation is inventing something that the House of Scholars had never seen before.
In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, what was the Council of Vocations thinking when they made Equality 7-2521 a Street Sweeper? The Council of Vocations chose Equality 7-2521 to be a Street Sweeper, there are some reasons that could explain why. They do not want him to be in a place of power because they know he is smart, he broke a lot of laws while in school, and to teach him a lesson to make him just like his brothers. Did the Council of Vocations make Equality 7-2521 a Street Sweeper to keep him away from power? Equality 7-2521 was very smart, so much so that he was punished for not being equal to his brothers.
Intelligence. Something that Equality 7-2521 has a great deal of. Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem, suggests that Equality 7-2521 knows that he is too intelligent to be a street sweeper, and he tries to prove his intelligence through his experiments so he can be “willed” into the Home of the Scholars. She shows this through his time in the Home of the Students when Equality is punished for his quick head, his love for learning, and the idea of learning, and when he escapes to the tunnel to work on his invention. Equality knows he is intelligent when he is punished in the Home of the Students because of his quick head.
His primary motivation was making his invention alone even though it was against the law. Equality is right to feel motivated this way because he has put the time and effort into his light bulb and he has invented something that the House of Scholars fear. He takes pride and joy for the work he has done. The world would not be the same if everyone had the same motivation! There will be no competition, you will not be able to motivate yourself to achieve your goals, the world would turn into a dictatorship, and people will not be unique and different from their
“We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Rand 19). How can an individual be a hero in a collectivist society? In The Anthem, a novella by Ayn Rand, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521 is portrayed as an archetypal epic hero. Equality 7-2521 exhibits the characteristics of an epic hero because he is capable of great deeds, he has a nemesis, and he experiences an event that leads to a quest.
Equality does this by when he first falls in love with Liberty, he is obsessed. However, when his invention is rejected by the council, he starts to realize he doesn’t need to be in a group and in result, starts to love Liberty less. When he understand individuality fully, he becomes very selfish and doesn’t care for Liberty at all and thinks of her as an object. Equality felt he needed to be with a group and with Liberty. Through his journey he discovered that he doesn’t need to be with a group and can be independent.
