For this lab, zeolite and magnetized zeolite were synthesized and compared with charcoal to find out with would be the most effective in the sequestering of Procion Red dye. Finding the concentration and absorbance of each zeolite, magnetized zeolite, and charcoal, along with a calibration curve, the best adsorbent is determined. Charcoal was the overall best sequestration of the Procion Red dye, since the adsorbent was highest compared to the others. Introduction Pollution has increased in the environment over the years, so the purpose of this experiment is to find the best adsorbent of chemicals to reduce the pollution.

In the essay, “Escape from Western Diet”, the author, Michael Pollan discusses that western diet is unhealthy to people, because western diet is responsible for many kinds of diseases. Michael pollan is against with the new theories and he think that the reason behind this diseases is because of the food industry. Nowadays food industry is making more processed food than the healthy food. I agree with Michael Pollan that food industries is using different type of theories to make a new products which is very harmful and unhealthy to those people who regularly eats diet food. I also agree with Michael Pollan’s three rules “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants”.

In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.

The Critique Essay of the “Escape from the Western Diet” In his work Escape from the Western Diet Michael Pollan focused on American negative food habits, their place in different spheres of the society and general possible ways to improve the food behavior. “The Western Diet is known for its lack of fresh fruit and vegetables and its strong reliance on fast-food, high sugar beverages, high-fat dairy, refined carbohydrates and red meat” (“Western Diet”). While many experts focus on its content, Pollan suggested to turn the attention to the effect the diet has on social, industrial and medical spheres. The author highlighted they unlikely will completely abandon the Western diet as it promote their development.

Michael Pollan’s article “Escape from the Western Diet” has provided the knowledge on effects of consumption of western diets which is mostly a processed food and the benefits of consuming a wholesome food which is farm fresh. In contrast, David Freedman’s article “How junk food can End Obesity” compares the nutrition level and healthiness of wholesome and processed food and also discusses the obesity issues and how to tackle it through the proper diet. According to pollan, the nutritionist or scientist published many theories on food which leads to chronic diseases, but such theories are not used to make a healthy diet, instead it has used by food industry and medical community to improve their profit margin. Since these dyes are mainly petroleum based they can cause serious health risks on people, especially those diagnosed with ADHD, attention deficit/hyperactive disorder. Because of these potential dangers, laws dating back to the 19th century have been passed, banning the addition of dyes and other harmful substances to foods. Through the years there have been many debates, laws and protests against food dye and their effects on humans and animals.

Safety and Health Effects Aspartame is one of the most strictly tested artificial sweetener. Independent reviews have examined the published research study on the safeness of aspartame and have found that aspartame is safe for minimal consumptions. According to Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the acceptable daily intake (ADI) value for aspartame is 50 mg/kg of body weight. It was found that the main sources that expose people to aspartame are diet soft drinks, though it is also present in other preserved products, such as food condiments, fruit juices, pharmaceutical preparations, and chewing gums in lesser quantities.

Sucralose (Splenda) Sucralose has been proven to worsen diabetes, abort pregnancies, and toxify the liver and kidneys. These are unmistakable signs that sucralose is an extremely dangerous substance, but it is the least-studied artificial sweetener. It is one of the more recent additions to the diet industry. One of the reasons for sucralose 's fast-track approval is because aspartame cannot be used in baked foods, for it breaks down at high temperatures into toxic substances, as it does during metabolisis within the human body. Sucralose was hailed to be a better alternative for cooking, but it releases chloropropanols when heated, which are toxic chlorine byproducts.

In agreement with said statistics, Michael Pollan states, “People eating a western diet are prone to a complex of chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating more traditional diets.” (421). In other words, consumers who take part of the western diet can, and most likely will, contract a chronic disease compared to those who choose the healthier or more traditional styles of eating. Who would’ve thought that something so insignificant as a single hamburger or large sized fountain drink could be so harmful? Well, it turns out that these items can be very much so.
