Composition of the gut microbiota is dependable on the diet that is consumed. As a result, the metabolic potential can be compromised. Diet that is mostly present in developed countries is a Western diet also called a meat-sweet diet. Western diet is characterized with high intake of red and processed meat, butter, high-fat dairy products, eggs, refined grains, white potatoes, French fries, and high-sugar drinks. Western diet also contains various additives such as sweeteners and food dyes that can impact gut microbiota. For example, artificial sweeteners including saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame were given to mice in drinking water; that combination of the sweeteners changed gut microbial community. Mix of sweeteners entered the large …show more content…
For years, people have been adding colors that are naturally present in vegetables, animals, and minerals. Larger production volumes requested the usage of higher amount of dyes, so in order to reduce the expenses of production, to make sure that it runs fast and can be reproducible the synthetic dyes came into production. They were considered safe because they are stable, but nowadays many researchers are reporting negative effects of azo dyes. The researchers have started to investigate the azo dyes back in the late sixties (Roxon et al., 1967). Synthetic azo dyes are widely used in different industries. Azo dyes have characteristic chemical structure that is called (azo) bond R-N = N-R'. Azo dyes are compounds consisting of a diazotized amine attached to an amine or a phenol and contain one or more azo linkages. Aromatic amines are essentially the products of azo dyes. Nowadays there are more than 3000 recognized azo dyes which are present in different industries such as textiles, paper, food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries (Johnson et al., 1978). Currently, there are six azo dyes used as food colorants: allura red (red shade) (E129), carmoisine (red shade) (E122), ponceau 4R (red shade) (E124), quinoline yellow (yellow shade) (E104), sunset yellow (orange shade) (E110), and tartrazine (orange shade)
For this lab, zeolite and magnetized zeolite were synthesized and compared with charcoal to find out with would be the most effective in the sequestering of Procion Red dye. Finding the concentration and absorbance of each zeolite, magnetized zeolite, and charcoal, along with a calibration curve, the best adsorbent is determined. Charcoal was the overall best sequestration of the Procion Red dye, since the adsorbent was highest compared to the others. Introduction Pollution has increased in the environment over the years, so the purpose of this experiment is to find the best adsorbent of chemicals to reduce the pollution.
In the essay, “Escape from Western Diet”, the author, Michael Pollan discusses that western diet is unhealthy to people, because western diet is responsible for many kinds of diseases. Michael pollan is against with the new theories and he think that the reason behind this diseases is because of the food industry. Nowadays food industry is making more processed food than the healthy food. I agree with Michael Pollan that food industries is using different type of theories to make a new products which is very harmful and unhealthy to those people who regularly eats diet food. I also agree with Michael Pollan’s three rules “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants”.
In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.
The Critique Essay of the “Escape from the Western Diet” In his work Escape from the Western Diet Michael Pollan focused on American negative food habits, their place in different spheres of the society and general possible ways to improve the food behavior. “The Western Diet is known for its lack of fresh fruit and vegetables and its strong reliance on fast-food, high sugar beverages, high-fat dairy, refined carbohydrates and red meat” (“Western Diet”). While many experts focus on its content, Pollan suggested to turn the attention to the effect the diet has on social, industrial and medical spheres. The author highlighted they unlikely will completely abandon the Western diet as it promote their development.
Michael Pollan’s article “Escape from the Western Diet” has provided the knowledge on effects of consumption of western diets which is mostly a processed food and the benefits of consuming a wholesome food which is farm fresh. In contrast, David Freedman’s article “How junk food can End Obesity” compares the nutrition level and healthiness of wholesome and processed food and also discusses the obesity issues and how to tackle it through the proper diet. According to pollan, the nutritionist or scientist published many theories on food which leads to chronic diseases, but such theories are not used to make a healthy diet, instead it has used by food industry and medical community to improve their profit margin. Pollan suggested that to prevent
In the essay, “Escape from the Western Diet”, the author, Michael Pollan discuss about how the western diet is harmful for the people. He think that because western diet is responsible for many kinds diseases nowadays such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and etc. I agree with Michael pollan that western diet is very unhealthy for people and the reason behind it, is because of the food industry. Food industry is making more processed food and they are also using different kinds of nutritional theories to make new product which is very unhealthy to those people who mostly eats diet food. Medical industries is also responsible for this problem because they make new drug treatment to treat the diseases.
The authors then explain the differences in diet across geographic regions, as well as introduce the differences between northernmost village diets and North American diets. Modern dieting is
Type two diabetes can cause many issues and problems for the person involved. For example, one can develop kidney disease due to the fact that high levels of blood sugar make the kidneys filter too much blood. Waste products start to build up in the blood and eventually the kidney starts to fail. Secondly, diabetes can also cause amputations and blindness to occur in severe matters. The cause of nerve damage and poor circulation makes the feet and lower legs at risk of amputation.
I. Artificial dyes are found in a majority of processed foods in America. Most of these synthetic dyes are made of or based off of petroleum, a crude oil. Since these dyes are mainly petroleum based they can cause serious health risks on people, especially those diagnosed with ADHD, attention deficit/hyperactive disorder. Because of these potential dangers, laws dating back to the 19th century have been passed, banning the addition of dyes and other harmful substances to foods. Through the years there have been many debates, laws and protests against food dye and their effects on humans and animals.
Safety and Health Effects Aspartame is one of the most strictly tested artificial sweetener. Independent reviews have examined the published research study on the safeness of aspartame and have found that aspartame is safe for minimal consumptions. According to Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the acceptable daily intake (ADI) value for aspartame is 50 mg/kg of body weight. It was found that the main sources that expose people to aspartame are diet soft drinks, though it is also present in other preserved products, such as food condiments, fruit juices, pharmaceutical preparations, and chewing gums in lesser quantities.
Sucralose (Splenda) Sucralose has been proven to worsen diabetes, abort pregnancies, and toxify the liver and kidneys. These are unmistakable signs that sucralose is an extremely dangerous substance, but it is the least-studied artificial sweetener. It is one of the more recent additions to the diet industry. One of the reasons for sucralose 's fast-track approval is because aspartame cannot be used in baked foods, for it breaks down at high temperatures into toxic substances, as it does during metabolisis within the human body. Sucralose was hailed to be a better alternative for cooking, but it releases chloropropanols when heated, which are toxic chlorine byproducts.
In agreement with said statistics, Michael Pollan states, “People eating a western diet are prone to a complex of chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating more traditional diets.” (421). In other words, consumers who take part of the western diet can, and most likely will, contract a chronic disease compared to those who choose the healthier or more traditional styles of eating. Who would’ve thought that something so insignificant as a single hamburger or large sized fountain drink could be so harmful? Well, it turns out that these items can be very much so.
It depends on the type of the sugar or sweetener and the amount intake. Sugar-free chewing gums have a
Summary Low calorie sweeteners when approved are approved post rigorous assessment by the regulatory bodies. The regulatory bodies are painstakingly scrutinising the evidence from all scientific studies and keep themselves updated with the relevant new studies when published. In this way, the approved sweeteners can be guaranteed to be safe within the limits established by the organizations. Therefore, low calorie sweeteners are a valuable and a safe tool for providing consumers the opportunity to choose foods without compromising on the sensorial benefits of the same.
Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which include soft drinks, fruit drinks, ice tea, energy and vitamin water drinks across the globe. Regular consumption of sugary sweetened beverages have been associated with weight gain, obesity and diabetes. The role of sugary sweetened beverages in the development of related chronic metabole diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, has not been quantitatively reviewed . How is consuming sugary beverages harmful to the body ?
