Race, ethnicity, and gender roles are classified as socially constructed identities rather than biological categories. These are well shown in the "Citizen 13360" by Miné Okubo and "Sultana's Dream" by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. In “Citizen 13360,” Japanese Americans were viewed as threats simply based on their appearance and as a result, subjected them to internment camps. There is no such thing as a pure race except when there has been no racial migration. Today's race is more determined by borders, continents, and even by appearance, which are all a social construct in our society.

In the novel entitled, The Help, race is a socially constructed concept. Jackson, Mississippi is an extremely segregated society where the majority of the white population creates rules that try to differentiate blacks from whites. However, there are a group of white individuals that stand for equality, which in turn could lead to danger amongst each other. Although Mississippi is the setting, seemingly different women joined together to change the way coloured maids were viewed. They set aside the false stereotypes of black individuals as well as white and spoke against it.

Defenders in the entertainment industry argue that those who continue to pin point the stereotypes in television and film are simply “exaggerating”. The characters portraying the groups are all fictional and have no impact in real life. For example, Soul Plane which was viewed as this African American movie showing them in the most stereotypical way. However, Chuck Wilson which was one of the script writers says it was nothing more than another Dumb and Dumber. Robert Mckee who is a creative writing coach says “they aren’t out here trying to change the world” (Mckee).

Annotated Bibliography Introduction: Examine different kinds of advertisements and the problem at hand with how they perpetuate stereotypes, such as; gender, race, and religion. Thesis: The problem in society today is in the industry of social media. In efforts to attract the eye of the general population, advertising companies create billboards, commercials, flyers and other ads with stereotypes that are accepted in today’s society. Because of the nations’ cultural expectation for all different types of people, advertisement businesses follow and portray exactly what and how each specific gender, race, or religion should be.

Addie Crosslin Dr. Bergh COM 314 1 May 2023 The Help The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett, tells the story of a young white woman journalist interviewing the Black help for a book that she is writing. The story is set in Jacksonville Mississippi during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. As the journalist, Skeeter Phelan, forms relationships with the domestic workers, she begins to develop a new sense of respect for the Black women of this time.

Morrison’s Recitatif is a thought-provoking story about an inter-racial childhood as two girls partially grow up in an institution without their mothers. Roberta’s mother was sick and Twyla’s mother wanted to dance all night, or so the girls believed. The two girls were able to bond through their life experiences and different predicaments and become friends. As they run into each other various times in adulthood, the story creates an interesting narrative of the views of society as a whole and individual racism. The way this story is set up causes the reader to not have a clear understanding as to how to interpret and perceive the overall narrative.

I examined the man sitting across from me, who was with his family yet his eyes seemed to not understand what was going on. I examined another lady who was with her family, she seemed so energized and happy, At that moment I began to realize how much things I took for granted. As a teenager I have never thought about aging, I’ve thought about having future goals and what not, but I have never thought about myself as an elderly. . Not only that,I realized that the things that have never crossed my mind, have been what most of the residents have been wishing for.

For decades the nursing industry has been stereotyped as a woman’s place. In 1975, the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest displayed this in full force. In the movie, Randle McMurphy is sent from prison to a mental institution for evaluation. McMurphy has repeated problems with Nurse Ratched, the Head Nurse. This movie is a prime example of the stereotypical view of the nursing industry at that time because all the nurses are women and the orderlies are men.

As I emerged myself into this week’s material, my main takeaway is that I do not think about aging. I know most men in my family live to be in their 70s and women into the 70s to 90s, but I do not think about aging from a personal aspect. I am aware that death will eventually come but with my son about to turn two, it is not something I sit and ponder. Not to mention that I will be reaching the 25 year mark next April, which to me is still very young. This made me recall the comments that Dan Buettner made in his TED lecture and how he compared other cultures to the American culture in terms of aging.

From being around my friends and peers around school, or even outside of school I have seen and been stereotyped. The stereotypes I have been placed with are, the crazy do anything kid, annoying, immature, good athlete, trustworthy, and you can mess/pick on me and I won’t do anything about it. I think most people would believe that I am not popular, but well known in a good way. Also that I am a fun guy to hang out with and do crazy stuff, until I get too annoying.

The Thanksgiving episode in the series Master of None portrays intersections of race, sexuality, gender, and class as the main character, Denise, seeks acceptance from her mother and herself as a homosexual black woman. The episode takes place over approximately twenty years during various Thanksgivings as Denise grows into her sexuality. The episode provides a true to life experience as it was largely written by the actress, Lena Waithe, who plays the role of Denise; however, the downfall of the episode is the use and perpetuation of Black and Latinx stereotypes, seen through the characterization of Denise’s girlfriend, Nikki, and of Denise’s family. When Denise is a young girl asks her mother what a minority is, she responds, “It’s a group

Stereotype a word that harbours judgements and ideas of how an individual or groups should act depending on factors such as social status, culture, sexual orientation and nationality. It is still used very often in today’s society but most of it consist of ideas that are proved to be false or exaggerated but nonetheless these unrealistic judgements are spread amongst society through propaganda, traditional and social media. In some circumstances, stereotypes can be extreme enough to incite prejudice, disrespect or even racism between people. Three stereotypes that I find to be to be really relevant in today’s society are directed towards the culture of Americans, Asians and Muslims. These stereotypes portray how these populaces act and what their characteristics should be or is.

Stereotyping is a way of categorizing certain groups of people or types of individuals with regards to gender, race, culture, religion etc. Stereotyping arises from prior assumptions due to influences by the media, history and personal experience. The statement: “To gain an understanding of the world we need to make use of stereotypes,” appears that stereotyping is required in order to really understand the world, and knowledge issues can be drawn from this statement: Does stereotyping prevent us from knowing someone truly and how are stereotypes created in the first place? One way to examine and discuss the knowledge issues is to look at different areas of knowledge, which in our case will be History and Human Science.

My older population observational hours allowed me to realize that the elderly are active members of society and have a lot of wisdom to offer to the younger generations. I got to listen to great stories from a great person that I met at a local restaurant. I wouldn’t have imagined the astonishing life experiences people from can go through and now more than ever, I feel grateful for my family and our wellbeing. Getting older is something to look forward to since it’s just a misconception that as you age, you lose your happiness. I now understand that getting older means having more time to enjoy hobbies and family, which bring true happiness to your life.
