A millennial is the title of anyone who is born after 1984. The author, Simon Sinek, is not a millennial, but does express his opinion in his informal lecture, “Millennials in the Workplace.” Sinek argues that all of the millennial’s issues stem from bad parenting, technology, impatience, and the environment and their long lasting effect the workplace. The only way to resolve the problem is to have corporate environments take responsibility and train the new employees to their standards. One’s childhood can have lasting effects on their adulthood and excessive use of technology is preventing natural coping mechanisms from forming. Sinek claims that it is unhealthy to be on electronics for extensive periods of time, but millennials are not always going to put it down (Sinek). Millennials are the first generation to experience advanced technology and are not to be blamed for their mistakes. That generation can make mistakes, because the generations prior did not have access to this technology and all of the issues are happening for the first time. Everyone, including the author of this essay, agrees that the childhood in question can be more pleasant, but the psychological effects of the childhood are not ideal in the workplace (Paras). This generation is growing up around new technology and parents who do not have the experience or the skills necessary to deal with those pressures. Raising a child in a new era of discovery is hard and the millennials are being taught without technology; by adding it to the equation without proper training it is going to lead to the misuse of technology. Sinek references that his own protege is considering quitting, because their work is not impacting anyone (Sinek). The millenial in this scenario is in a constant state of impatience and cannot experience the joys of working up to their goals. The lack of instant gratification in corporate environments can discourage millennials from working long hours and this results in less employees for the workforce. The environment is not secure, everyday the media changes with new trends and statements and things like “The Floor Is Lava” and “planking” will eventually be forgotten (Paras). The millennials hurd together, but the issue is that a cohort of clueless and ignorant people will not learn anything new from each other. Technology has been expeditiously changing over previous generations. Those born between 1946 - 1964 are classified as Baby Boomers, and from 1995 - 2012 are catergorised as Generation Z. Over the years, youths become more connected to their mobile phones and given up and lost real connections and relationships? The behaviour standards and the influence from Baby Boomers has significantly altered towards the youths over the past decades. Generation Z has an overall population of 82 million worldwide, with the oldest turning 23 and the youngest turning 6 (Robinson, 2018). As the World progresses, technology has always been a part of it, if not ahead. I for one, have grown up in a time where the use of technology has been intertwined in the society. Since technological advancements began a while ago, the newer generation of children has access to it with ease than those who came before them. This then does arise some concerns about the effect of technology on younger generations. Just like with other controversial topics, there are some negative sides to technology as well as positive sides.
Implementing training programs where all generations can learn about each other’s differences can help employees understand how and why each generation works. Workshops in which multigenerational workforces can share work experience and mentor each other can assist in creating a sense of community and a supportive environment where employees can be open and share their ideas an collaborate with each other in order to better their organization. Millennials are perceived as being disloyal and quick to search for new employment when they unhappy in their work environments, but due to starting their careers during times of recession, Millennials try to maintain their roles in the workplace to remain financially stable. The main reason for turnover among Millennials is a result of exclusion, slow growth within the workplace, and limited development opportunities. Finding gratification and meaning to their work is important to Millennials so that they can excel and be productive in the workplace that is supportive of their work.
The current study is the effects of exposure to technology on young children. The article “The Me Me Me Generation” by Joel Stein mentions how Millennials are a self-centred generation who have been raised with many participation awards and parents who mistakenly believed that strengthening their self-esteem was they key to success rather than focusing more on strengthening up their character and skills. Stein mentions that the younger generation lives mostly through screens, whether those on phones, iPad’s, or computers, and believes someway that it is entitled to success without experiencing the rough situations in lifetime. Stein also presented studies showing that the incidence of narcissistic personality disorder among Millennials is massive.
