Experience, according to Shakespeare, is “the teacher of all great things.” The best benefit about an experience is that its gains are not restricted to only one person. Not only can one gain knowledge, wisdom, and understanding from experience, but one can also use these experiences to reach and encourage others. Through my experiences in volunteering, sports, work, and life, I have become a contributor, collaborator, communicator, challenger, and enlightener. I am constantly trying to help and empower others, and I am excited to use my voice and experiences to contribute to the Towson community by introducing diversity, encouraging and motivating others with my life stories, and helping to challenge others to improve in particular areas of …show more content…
By being exposed to people from different cultures and backgrounds, students may become more accepting of people with different backgrounds and cultures and want to gain more insight about them, which then enhances their social development and enriches their perspective. I am African, and much to my surprise, many Africans in America are not aware of their African heritage. If they are not aware of their own culture, then non-Africans have a greater chance of not knowing about African culture. I would love to participate in the African Diaspora Club (ADC) at Towson and help encourage awareness. I love enlightening people about the African culture and would inform people of interesting things, such as the Ghanaian naming system. In my native country, Ghana, names are given based on the day which one was born or the names of dead relatives who are deemed to have had a good, honorable name. My native name, MaameAfua, originates from the Akan language: Maame means “mother,” while Afua means “born on Friday.” It is very uncommon to find a Ghanaian whose name does not reflect the Ghanaian naming system. In order to make one's name more unique, one can add anything to the names based on the day, for example, …show more content…
I love giving back to my community and am ready to give back to the Towson community by being a volunteer whenever and wherever I can and by challenging others to improve. When I went to Towson’s Open House, I saw how beautiful the campus was and how it was filled with people that seemed enthusiastic and eager just to be there. I realize that it takes work and dedication to maintain the campus. Therefore, I am prepared to help maintain the campus by participating in Adopt-A-Campus and by volunteering for First Fridays. While volunteering within Towson, I will also help the community by volunteering off-campus. Volunteering will help me make new friends, increase social skills, and learn valuable job skills. When I was in first grade, I had a struggle reading in English and took The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). ESOL helped me become familiar with the English language and benefited me a lot. I would like to work with the Reading Partners and help kids who, like me, need help
I plan on volunteering for many different organizations, that I am both currently working with, and plan to. For example, I participate in volunteer events for Special Olympic games, The Everett Theater, and St. Joseph’s Parish. By helping
Here at Frostburg State University, I am the Executive Vice President of a major organization on campus called the Black Student Alliance. Our organizations goal is, “To represent and address the needs of the African-American student body and to culturally enrich the campus the campus as a whole through programs and lectures.” This year alone we have gained over 50 active members, and have had a turnout of more than 70 members at every event. Attending a predominantly White institution would be very difficult if there were no cultural groups on campus.
Being a part of these groups will likely be beneficial to my interpersonal skills and will challenge me to do something that will benefit other students. Likewise, I would also like to become involved in WCU's student government association as I think this would be a great opportunity to continue to hone the skills that I have been developing during my High School student government experience, while also learning to work with a larger and more diverse group of people than I have worked with
Sending out helpful emails of how to navigate social climates at Branson. Helping to direct conversations in wellness classes towards issues on campus. Sending out school surveys to assess the emotional well-being of the student body. Helping students of all walks of life have a friend or an ally on
It is not only my intellectual curiosity, but also my passion towards giving back to the community, that will lead me to success. As a UD honors student, I plan on joining organizations and performing volunteer work that I have done in high school. It will allow me to consolidate my musical and creative passions, while participating in new extracurricular activities pertaining to sports and community service. I believe that with the University of Delaware’s many opportunities, I can have the potential to become a strong leader and active member of the UD Honors community. The lessons that I have learned from working with these children will forever remain a part of me, as I hope to grow to be someone who will one day be able to change society, and will remind me to always dare to
As a freshman in my first year as a member of BHSN Habitat for Humanity, I had many meaningful volunteering experiences. In January I helped organize and clean up the new Habitat for Humanity warehouse. Cleaning up the warehouse was a tough yet a rewarding job, and I was also able to meet other Habitat for Humanity members from IU and from BHSS. Leading up to Evening for Habitat I solicited businesses for donations with my senior partner.
Currently, at Texas Tech University, I continuously strive to spread the amount of diversity within the student body. By being a member of the African Student Organization at Texas Tech, I represent a group of individuals who seek to educate the Lubbock community about the richness and diverse cultures that Africa presents. I believe that it is essential that students of all nationalities feel welcomed because they will then be motivated to embrace their identity and in turn, help contribute to the diversity of the
I have had the unforgettable opportunity to personally raise $1,400 for kids to go to summer camp, whose families could not afford it otherwise. I have worked at food drives, homeless shelters, and kid’s programs in my town, in hopes to make someone’s day a little bit better and ultimately make my community stronger. These experiences shaped who I am today. While I cherish the experience I had making a difference in my own town, I am ready to grow and leave a positive impact somewhere else in the country.
The first benefit would be finding peoples inner self. People who volunteer find a sense of empowerment within themselves. They feel like they are making a difference little by little. They improve and teach themselves in the process also (Borus 19). Another characteristic that they find is self confidence.
The chance to experience a new chapter in my life and learn more about this world and the people in it are the reasons why I chose to attend Berea College. Prior to coming to Berea, I lived my entire life in a rural town in Tennessee that was very closed-minded to the outside world. About 1% of my high-school identified as a minority race, and anyone who did not fall into the white, wealthy class status were shunned. This made Berea College’s acceptance of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, and marital preference all the more refreshing. Through my experiences being an Asian Students Union’s officer, engaging in conversations with fellow students, and studying abroad in Japan, my world-view has expanded such that I have a deeper appreciation
In addition to education, the center strived for health and wellness and community engagement. While volunteering, I did not have the opportunity to participate in anything other than interacting with the children during their education sessions. However, while interacting with the children I engaged in conversations that acknowledged me on the extra activities the center offered. Surprisingly, I did not expect the center to offer any such thing as health and wellness or community engagement. This is what exceeded my expectations.
I am the type of person that likes helping the elderly and the needy; so when I go to India, giving clothes and food to the boys and girls who have nothing to eat and sleep with an empty stomach is a priority to me during my trip. The Atlantic County Library is also somewhere I volunteer; helping young children read books and organizing craft days on the weekends. It is a duty for every high school student to contribute to their society to make the community around us a better
I am a first year student and I was looking for opportunities to be more involved in the Ryerson community. I do have experience in volunteering at an elementary school in the Peel District School Board and I personally enjoyed my time as a volunteer in the past. As a volunteer I had the responsibilities of grading test, assisting students that had difficulty with lessons, planning activities, and supervising students to ensure a safe working environment. My previous volunteer experience has allowed me to build good communication skills with children and teachers. I want to dedicate my time to helping support the youth in our community and hopefully in the process I will be able to make a difference in a students life by helping them overcome
I would like you to know about volunteering this summer to help dyslexic students at Shelton School in Dallas. It was one of the biggest experiences of my life that helped me grow as a person and I realized that I can help people in many different ways. Growing up for me was one challenge after another in school. I felt like teachers and people at school didn’t really understand that I am capable of doing higher level work, I just learn differently than 80% of the students.
Volunteering is a way of helping others. It is giving a person 's time and ability to help someone who may be in need of help. Not only does volunteering help others, but what they may not know is that it can be helpful to themselves. It is a great way for someone to interact with others in their community. It gives someone that time to themselves while also creating bonds when they are doing the greater good.
