Benjamin Franklin Through his efforts to influence and inspire the world, Benjamin Franklin led America to reach new heights that would eventually make it the strongest nation known to man. As one of the most involved men in the United States during his time, he managed to transform America and change it into the country its citizens love today. He was able to do things people only dreamed of. “In Philadelphia, he helped launch the city’s first police force, the first volunteer fire company, the first fire insurance firm, the first hospital, the first public library, and the academy that became the first institution of higher learning (the University of Pennsylvania).” (Powell p 2) Benjamin Franklin is credited with many of his inventions as well as his writings and contributions to society. The lightning rod was intended by Benjamin Franklin to protect houses from very dangerous and destructive lightning strikes. The rod, at the top of the house, was connected to a wire that ran all the way to the ground. When lightning would strike, the electricity was harmlessly transferred into the ground. The American identity has evolved over time. During the 1700’s, the Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, occurred. It spread rapidly across Europe, and then to North America. This revolutionary way of thinking was crucial to the development of the American identity. The Enlightenment was the period for cultivation of science and human reason.
Another accomplishment of his was the fact that he was part of the Constitutional congress, and he also took over as president of Pennsylvania during the Constitutional convention (American delegates of the Constitutional Convention: Benjamin Franklin 5, 7). He contributed a lot of important things that made our constitution the way it is. He helped draft the constitution, and he is an important figure in American history. In our nation, unity is a major issue because a lot of people regard themselves as inferior and do not take time to see each other’s strengths. The constitution acknowledges all of us as one part of a nation who together can rise to overcome any challenge.
At a young age, Franklin was a determined. He would become his brother’s apprentice in his printing press company. This would inspire him to establish his own printing press which would be well known throughout all the colonies. He was then given the rank of postmaster, which made him the head of all the post offices in the colonies. He was very interested in pursuing science and enjoyed inventing; this curiosity of science would lead him to be the first to discover electricity.
