People started running away as they saw Beowulf was losing. One man named Wiglaf stayed to help. He was a very brave and strong man, almost like Beowulf. Wiglaf and Beowulf work together as they defeat the dragon. Beowulf is striked with poison before the Dragon dies. That is the end of Beowulf. This battle shows many things, not only blood, but the courage of Wiglaf to help his king. This battle was indeed very violent, getting bit by a dragon doesn’t seem fun. On of Beowulf’s other attributes were the bravery that he displayed. In Grendel, only recollections of Beowulf's missions are seen. Resulting in the reader not being able to actually read about beowulf’s mission, leading to not giving the reader a actual idea of how strongly he would be able to destroy his opponents. On the other hand, Beowulf's ego is demonstrated well in his poem named after himself, and the very detailed description made by the author when describing the horrific battle between beowulf and grendels mother. He is made out to be this strong brave man who can not be harmed in order to boost his appearance and ego.
Beowulf’s setting could be described as brutal, as it was set in the times of the Geats, the Danes and Swedes that lived in constant warfare with one another. A lot of men, when they went into battle, expected to
Beowulf is the perfect hero, both tragic and epic. He is larger than life with his impressive strength and drive that helps him defeat an assortment of monsters, such as Grendel and Grendel's mother. His overconfidence and pride makes him a tragic hero. In lines 678-684, Beowulf boldly states, "When it comes to fighting, I count myself as dangerous as Grendel. No weapons... unarmed he shall
Beowulf is an epic poem about a brave heroic man that comes and helps a king get rid a monster. An epic poem is a story about someone who has heroic like ideas in a society. Beowulf is a story that was sung by the bards and scops because that would be the only thing that will be passed on even after his death. It was written by the Anglo-Saxons, who did not believe in the afterlife, unlike Christianity. So the warrior would have to do something that would let his memory be passed on.
Beowulf was invincible in his strength. He battles terrifying monster and risks his life. He showcases his heroic stoicism through his super-human physical strength. Grendel was a horrendous monster that was the incarnation of maleficence. Beowulf’s men had tried to use their weapons to fight, but Grendel “ blunted every mortal man 's blade” (Line 485).
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
After being mortally wounded, Grendel cowardly flees. Beowulf's actions in battle reflects that of a hero as Beowulf was quick to fearlessly attack the monster in order to save the lives of the thanemen. Grendel's actions in battle reflects that of a monster as Grendel wanted to retreat when he knew he was unable to win the fight against the hero.
Strength, honor, and resilience are all words that captures the essence of Beowulf. During the Anglo-Saxon era, Beowulf is a hero who strikes fear in his enemies and relief in his allies. Beowulf is widely-regarded as the most honorable and ruthless hero in all of the world; he defends villages of people from blood-hungry predators, defeats sea monsters, and defeats Grendel and Grendel’s mother in the epic poem Beowulf. However, Beowulf can be an egomaniac at times. For instance, before Beowulf’s epic fight and defeat of the monster Grendel, Beowulf strips nude and fights the monster nude to boast and show off.
Beowulf's views on the news of the dragon: “He had scant regard/ for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all/ of its courage and strength, for he had kept going/ often in the past” (2347-50). Beowulf’s courage is so great that he has no fear of any monster or foe that attacks his people or home. He does not see the fire-breathing dragon as a threat at all. In time, Beowulf becomes king and takes on the responsibility of protecting his people and, in this instance, from a fire-breathing, raging dragon. Beowulf declares to his people: “This fight is not yours/ nor is it up to any man except me” (2532-33).
The hero was not scared he just wanted the treasure and to be the epic hero he’s always wanted to be. He had many attempts to kill the dragon, but the dragon was stronger than he thought. He stabs the dragon with the sword and it snaps and breaks. He does not give up though! This shows the strength and bravery of Beowulf.
The reason for that being, he thought it wouldn’t be fair so he used his strength and overcome the evil creature, descendant of Cain, also known as Grendel. Beowulf shows himself aging as the battles keep coming along. The time arrives to fight the dragon and he was weak and old and somewhat knew he couldn’t do this fight alone. The dragon poisons Beowulf with a bite into the neck, and just before Beowulf is dying Wiglaf steps in scavenges through the dragon’s treasures and then returns to show Beowulf and then speaks, “Now that I’ve bought this bright treasure mound with my old lifeblood look to my kingdom the need of my Geats— I must leave you now”. (2799-2801)

Beowulf manifests the features of a literary epic by reflecting the Anglo-Saxon warrior culture from which it came from, and containing great, descriptive language and plots that include great battles and conflicts. The warrior culture is evident from the explanation of the story in Journeys where Beowulf, along with his group of warriors, sails to Denmark, ready to defeat Grendel to the very end of the excerpt where defeating Grendel brings Beowulf honor, pride, and glory. “He was happy with his / nightwork / and the courage he had shown” (826-828). Great battle and conflict, as well as descriptive detail, can be seen in this line from Beowulf and Grendel’s battle, “Every bone in his body [Grendel’s] / quailed and recoiled, but he could not
In a different land, a slave stole treasure from a dragon, incurring the wrath and fury when he would awaken. The dragon would roam the lands destroying villages and kingdoms due to the dishonor of being robbed. Eventually, the dragon came across Beowulf's land and destroyed his home and hall, being defenseless against a dragon's fire Beowulf could do nothing. In response to the burning of his land, Beowulf gathered another group of warriors and went to get their revenge. During the battle with the dragon all of his warriors fled save one who fought with him until the end.
evil. Beowulf is the archetype warrior hero whose one purpose is to defend the innocent and vulnerable of his people. Whether it is the devil incarnated, the mother of the monster, or a fire-breathing dragon, he is capable of defending the Danes and Geats. Without his heroism and bravery, these people would’ve faced certain death under a weakened, but good, King Hrothgar. Beowulf uses the same selflessness as the military that defends our country, and is as great of a warrior as each and every one of the soldiers in the United States armed services.
