Bernice Irene Bilyeu left her mark on the world over many years. She lived to be a 105 years old and survived through many hardships. Bernice was always kind and greeted everyone with a smile. She has expressed her views on the Great Depression as an economical crisis, as well as slavery.

Marjorie Stewart Joyner was born in Monterey, Virginia. She was born on October 24, 1896, and was the granddaughter of a slave and slave owner. After attending primary school, Marjorie moved to Chicago, Illinois to pursue a career in cosmetology. She attended the A.B. Molar Beauty School and she later became the first African-American woman to graduate from the school. At the age of 20, she met and married Robert E. Joyner.

Bessie’s dad died when she was a little girl. When she was 9 years old her mother and brother died, the older sister of Bessie (Viola) took care of her siblings. Bessie would earn money by impoverished household, she and her brother (Andrew) began singing on the street of Chattanooga, she would dance and sing. Her brother would play the guitar while she was doing that. In 1904 the oldest brother from them left home to join a small traveling troupe.

Marjorie Lee Browne was a well-known mathematician and educator who was only the third African-American woman to earn her Ph.D. in mathematics. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 9, 191 to Mary Taylor Lee and Lawrence Johnson Lee. Browne’s mother died when she was only two, so she was raised by her father, a railway postal clerk, and her stepmother, Lottie Lee, who was a school teacher. Her stepmother’s encouragement to stay focused on her studies and her father’s love of mathematics both influenced Browne during her time in school.
