In this paper I will be discussing how Boys and Girls Clubs are used as a deterrence method to keep “at-risk” children off the streets. These programs are all across the country in inner cities and in rural areas. I will be using the Boys and Girls Club to look at its relationship with Social Disorganization theory. The Boys and Girls Club has been around since 1860, when three women decided to open their doors to underprivileged boys. They “believed that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative” (Boys & Girls Clubs of America). In 1906 multiple boys clubs in Boston decided to join together and create the organization that sparked a national movement. This theory gets to the root of most of the troubles and assists policymakers find a solution, even if it is just short term. Many of these policies are designed to protect the rights of children and reduce the number of delinquents. Social Disorganization is an obstacle one has to overcome and the BGCA helps at-risk children defend against stereotypes and build a better tomorrow. The BGCA helps get kids off the streets, thus deterring crime in neighborhoods that are the most vulnerable. The BGCA gives children who are seeing evidence of social disorganization, such as broken windows and graffiti, to have a refuge that is safe and away from the wicked world outside. These organizations help kids struggling to find a place to stay. In areas where there is higher ethnic diversity there is a higher percentage of crime. Kubrin wrote in 2009 that “Heterogeneity can undermine ties between neighbors, limiting their ability to agree on a common set of values or solve commonly experienced problems, including those related to crime.” I think Kubrin is say that individuals who are not ethnically alike will be more hesitant to trust one another, which will cause a strain on the relationship; thus creating an uneasy feeling among neighbors who also live in that same area. The result is criminal conduct in hopes of getting out. The BGCA teaches kids that it is okay to trust others and to create good and lasting relationships. In “The Code of the Streets”, Elijah Anderson go in details and shows us on how teens are getting killed on a daily basis. Dr. Anderson discuss some social intuitions that influence crime in the urban neighborhoods. The first one I would discuss is the “Decent and Street Families”. The Decent and Street Families represent two poles of value orientation, two contrasting conceptual categories Dr. Anderson stated. Decent residents judge themselves as for judging others in the streets as for streets families express themselves as a decent their not.
People that have gone to a good school and have a family with positive influences are less likely to engage in deviant behavior. External structures like schools, churches, clubs, police departments, keep individuals from deviating, these institutions push individuals into conforming to the norms of society. Travis Hirschi introduced four elements of social bonds: “attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief” (Vierra 2014). Reckless believed that these four components could prevent crime and deviant behaviors because they give the individual a purpose and sense of responsibility. If individuals in many of these lower income neighborhoods do not have a job and no source of steady income, then they are ever more likely to resort to deviant behaviors in order to attain the means of survival.
The Boys and Girls Club was started in 1860 in Hartford Connecticut by Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, and Elizabeth Hammersley. Originally the club was known as Boys Club of America and their goal was to keep young boys off the streets and provide them with a more influential place to go. However, it wasn’t until 1990 that girls became involved and the club was renamed the Boys and Girls Club (www.bgca.org). Today, the Boys and Girls Club’s mission is to help boys and girls realize what they are capable of and become accomplished citizens. The program also wants children to be aware of their own importance, impact, helpfulness, and ability as individuals (www.bgcsnv.org).
The federal government’s “War on Crime” by the Johnson administration in the 60s made way for tougher law enforcement and surveillance (Hinton, 2015). However, with this came the separation of children and adults in the criminal justice system; then the separation of juvenile delinquents from status offenders. As mentioned, status offenders are different from juvenile delinquents because they had broken rules which apply to only children. Meanwhile, juvenile delinquents are youths under the age of 18, who committed offenses that would be punishable to adults as well. By the late 1960s, there became a growing concern that juveniles involved in the court-based status-offense system, were not getting their best interests met (Shubik & Kendall, 2007).
Love tends to effect each character’s action differently. For example, love is what motivated the plot of the story “The Valley of Girls” by Kelly Link. For instance, the Olds observed society and performed actions to make sure their children are aligned with success. Love and social status is what makes these people relate, or correlate with each other; it reminds me of a government politically develop by love and society. In “The Valley of Girls” by Kelly Link, from Teenagers and Old are motivated by two specific motives, which are love and social status.
In “The Boys Are Not All Right” by Michael Ian Black, the author uses different powers of persuasion to convince the audience to succumb to his opinion that men today don’t know how to properly express their feelings because of cultural norms that expressing your feelings is associated with weakness and femininity. He starts the article by drawing on the fact that almost all mass shootings have been committed by men. He says that men tend to lash out in anger because they don’t know how to properly express their feelings. He attempts to persuade his reader to start a conversation on how to make it more acceptable in society for men to express their emotions in a way that doesn’t potentially hurt others.

Informal controls once again act in a manner that supports the idea that when neighborhood adults interact in terms of obligations and expectations, they are able supervise and control the activities of children. When this is not present in neighborhoods, such as the one shown in the documentary The House I Live In, the result is the participation of youths in the drug trade and other aspects of criminal life. The destruction of the neighborhood has already been underway as a result of spatial mismatch, but worsens when the war on drug is factored in. These neighborhoods often suffer from the result of the policy known as broken windows policing that doesn’t make situations any better. The supposed purpose of this show is to not only watch these bad-mannered women fight, bicker, and argue, but it is also to watch these women mature and step away from their “bad girl” personifications. Sociological theories suggest that a lack of equal opportunities, neighborhood disarray, and the social environment is the leading cause for crime causation (Hall, n.d.). The sociological theory has a larger impact on the poor and disproportioned. According to the sociological theory crime is due to the environment an individual is subjected too. This is especially true in communities where the crime rate is high. In communities that are inundated with gangs, violence, drugs and murder, juveniles are more likely associate with gangs and violence if it is always visible within their community.
Many critics agree on one fact about Canadian author Alice Munro: one of her most notable qualities in regards to her work is the distinct use of realism in her writing. Her writing provides a strong sense of familiarity to the reader, while also containing stronger metaphorical meanings that one can note when they begin to closely look at her work. Her short story “Boys and Girls” portrays the socialization of a young girl, once very close to her father and unaware of any sort of gender bias within her society, into a young woman with a pessimistic view of femininity and her expected position in society. This story shows the socialization process in a way that makes it easy to recognize, illustrating circumstances that the reader can notice the blatant sexism and misogyny; however, its portrayal is extremely realistic, allowing the reader to recall how oblivious they may have been in the past during times that they have been impacted by social biases in our world. Critics of Munro typically agree on her overall theme of femininity and coming of age in her writings; “Boys and Girls” emphasizes the ways in which young girls are socialized into a seemingly natural understanding of the sexist expectations and gender roles.
The set of the structural-functional theories are among the most widespread perspectives on the juvenile delinquency. The group of the theories regards that the behavior of the underage delinquent is caused by the breakdown of the social process that consequently results in the increase of conformity (Thompson & Bynum, 2016).
