After learning Brad’s vignette it was only natural to smile to see how brilliant of a young man he is becoming. The first thing I learnt from this vignette was that because Brad may be prone to getting distracted while doing school work isn not an excuse. However, Brad knows about how ADHD affects his studies and does not use it as an excuse for letting his grades get down. It seems that Brad works hard on everything he does and sees ideal grades from the work he puts in. Secondly, I never knew that students with ADHD were prone to having speech-learning difficulties. The study by Lewandowski, Hendricks, and Gordon attempted to venture to see how ADHD students stacked up to their non-ADHD having peers. The study had 784 students (38 with ADHD) complete their series of examinations in order to examine certain test-taking skills. The sections of testing that the students would have to do were through; reading speed tests, reading comprehension tests, vocabulary test, decoding/word recognition test, self-evaluation of performance on timed academic reading, timed test anxiety inventory, demographic questionnaire, and effort measure. Through these 8 exams there were multiple tends that were noted. Firstly, it was found that students with ADHD produced a significantly lower score on comprehension accuracy, vocabulary accuracy, and decoding number correct. However, they scored the same on comprehension and vocabulary, reading speed, test navigation, test anxiety scores, or self-perceptions. After viewing the results, the “finding was that the ADHD group spent less time than peers reading the passage, yet more time than peers reading questions (Lewandowski, Hendricks, & Gordon, 2015)”. The study suggests that when a student had better reading speeds and vocabularies it will result in less anxiety and more confident. ADHD is very common and the symptoms our patient, Kevin, is experiencing are in line with the symptoms used to diagnose it. More specifically, Kevin’s symptoms are matching the combined classification of ADHD. As a general diagnosis, ADHD is a very common disorder, and can be classified into three types- Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined. Inattentive ADHD is the type where the patient is easily distracted, a common stereotype (albeit true) of ADHD patients. This type is generally associated with lack of attention to detail, careless mistakes, failure to keep on task (being easily distracted), and being forgetful.
Of course, we are not talking here about students whose comprehension is severely impaired, because they are usually schooled individually and have a special grading system, adjusted to their needs and abilities. But in the classrooms there are often students with less obvious disabilities, which, although less severe, can also create academic challenges. Some of them, such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, are directly related to learning and may affect the speed at which students acquire the material. Others, such as anxiety or ADHD may not only disrupt learning, but also are very likely to cause discrepancies between the students’ subject knowledge and their exam and assignment results.

As academic demands increase in middle school, children with APD can struggle to develop reading skills. If their brain is working overtime to decode words, they don't understand the text. They might hate reading, won't even read the book that every kid in school is obsessed with and have weak reading comprehension.
