During processing, the inmate will be classified to determine their housing. Classifying an inmate helps keep the inmate and other inmates as safe as possible as well as the staff. The classification lets members in the jail know and understand how dangerous the inmate might be and the custody level that is needed. This is where security comes into play with the inmate. During this search the staff will give the inmate a “pat” down and a strip search. Before this happens there must be a supervisor there for review and written approval. These precautions are for security purposes for the entire facility to make sure there are no weapons or contraband being smuggled in. Another form of security is undressing the inmates and taking them out of their personal clothes and putting them in orange jail clothing or identifiable jail clothing. The U.S. prison systems has evolved greatly in the pasts centuries in many ways, but the most critical part where it greatly improved was the security of the facilities, the inmate treatment, and the construction of the building of how stable it is. The first and most important is the security. A prison system has to have a strict security system because without it prisoners can do whatever they want.
