Canada has invented a day called "Buy Nothing Day." They have invented this day because they believe consumerism is out of control. "Buy Nothing Day" is not a good idea because people have needs, small businesses need consumers, and consumerism is a healthy part of a growing economy.
Firstly, people are always in need of things. Perhaps they ran out of tissue paper or forgot to pick up something for dinner. No big deal they can always run to the store unless its "Buy Nothing Day" in which case consumers will have to wait to buy things they need. People need access to goods 24/7 so they are able to have the things they need. Even one day without being able to buy products can be potentially harmful to consumers and should not be allowed.

With "Buy Nothing Day" these businesses will lose customers that they depend on in order to survive. Without customers, they will not have the money to maintain their businesses. This may cause them to close down and look for more stable employment, and with the growing unemployment rate finding a job may be hard. In fact, many unemployed people end up becoming homeless. Small businesses already struggle and they need to be protecting by not allowing "Buy Nothing Day" to derail their profits.
Lastly, consumerism is a healthy part of a growing environment. People need to buy goods in order for businesses to have money so that the economy can continue to grow. With "Buy Nothing Day" the entire consumer market is coming to a halt which will hurt consumers and businesses. Without this flow of commerce, the economy could fail. Consumerism is needed to balance the economy.
In conclusion, the idea of "Buy Nothing Day" is potentially harmful to people, businesses, and the economy. "Buy Nothing Day" is faulty because consumerism is a healthy part of the economy and should be embraces. The invention of " Buy Nothing Day" in Canada is not a suitable
The article, “Shopping Trumps Turkey”, by Gregory Karp, argues between whether or not retailers should initiate Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving day. Karp considers that retailers should not commence the sales a day earlier. I agree with the author, due to the fact that the retailers that begin the sales on Thanksgiving day are careless and greedy, along with commanding people to not spend time with their families. Clearly, retailers should not release Black Friday sales a day earlier. To start off, experts say that the saying of retailers opening because the consumers are asking them to is false.
Those 3 times are during Christmas, gamer conventions, and Black Friday. It isn’t like Gamestop isn't making any money, they just don’t make as much as they used to. If they shut it down there can be a possibility that some people complain but that is not likely. People go to Bestbuy and Walmart, they have reasonable prices and they offer more
By midday Gould's plan unraveled as the federal government began to sell gold on the market, driving down the price. This day is known as Black Friday, no not November 25 when stores offer great deals before Christmas but a much more dismal day for the economy. Although Fish and Gould caused this disruption as well as ruined speculators, by covering up their tracks the two walked away with
In The Next Canada: In Search of Our Future Nation Myrna Kostash assesses the future of Canada, one that she argues is different from her own generation. For the purpose of this research paper I will focus on Kostash’s subsection on culture and media – pages 65 to 76. It begins with the nexus generation, the group of individuals who bridge two periods of technological popularity: Industrial and Information (Kostash 65). This group, who was born between the early 1960s and late 1970s, have a unique ability to acknowledge the past while also living and understanding new wave technology as it grew. Kostash argues that mass media became the language of the generation and their ability to understand its broadcasting was a skill – they were experts.
According to the “Many stores look at the pros and cons of being open on Thanksgiving Day” It states there are ups and down to being open on a holiday. For example in the text it states “retailers are coming to their senses and realizing it's a family holiday”. This show is that Stephen Lebovitz the president of CBL is closing down 72 of its malls for Thanksgiving because he realized it was a family holiday. Another example from a text is “other stores are closing for Thanksgiving this year after being open for several years”. The statement shows other stores are closed down because of respect of the holiday or economics.
Have you ever thought about the origins of our holidays? Columbus day in particular has recently been controversial. Maybe the textbook version isn’t the same as the truth. The truth about Christopher Columbus provides evidence that Columbus day should be abolished. First off, he didn’t even care about any of the Native Americans.
The 1960’s and 70’s were a time of political turmoil and unrest in Canadian history. The October of 1970 in particular, is a period remembered for its violence and hate. The kidnapping of two Canadian politicians by the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ), a terrorist group, changed Canadian society forever. The FLQ and the October Crisis ignited separatist feelings in French Canadians, changed the way the government handled national emergencies and altered Canadians’ opinions on key issues. The October Crisis is a truly significant moment in Canadian history for many reasons.
The result is that, in nearly half the states in the country, the only real effect is that parents have to figure out child care solutions because their kids have the day off while they do not. The net result isn 't a day of rest and relaxation. Rather, Columbus Day ends up creating more work than it alleviates. We 're lionizing the wrong European explorer
Throughout history, consumerism has been defined and changed by aspects such as war, changes in work and production, and government policies. Americans have been able to consume more luxuries over time and have had more control over the way the economy progress and even when to call it to a halt. Consumerism has benefitted American citizens by putting money back into their pockets through policies and procedures such as the New Deal and the increase in union power. Workers’ wages have increased due to consumer and their unions have become more powerful over time. Consumerism is not a thing of the past, but rather a favorable advantage of the future that has allowed America to progress and benefitted American
Defining moments are what shape and help develop a person through stages of their life. These important moments in life are not limited to just people. All things, including Canada have had many defining moments that still have an impact on modern society. The battle of Vimy Ridge granted Canada a global reputation and gave Prime Minister Robert Borden the push towards independence. The FLQ October Crisis was a terroristic incident that stopped Quebec independence.
I’m astounded by how different the views on consumerism are for people living in a developing country compared to a first world country like Canada. I only noticed how unacceptable my addiction to consumerism is when it was time to pack my luggage for the flight home and I wasn’t able to fit everything and thus I’m forced to leave nearly 70$ worth of goods behind. It was the first time where I legitimately felt unintelligent with what I was spending my money on and my relatives to this day create no shortage of teasing about it.
The concept of consumerism was first brought to my awareness in First Year Writing. I admit, before this intro course, I was indeed ignorant of the negative impacts that consumption had on society. FYS opened my mind to the dangers of over-consumption, and more importantly, helped me see beyond what meets the eye. Take for example, Disney, a seemingly innocent corporation, a company’s whose name is practically synonymous with the notion of childhood innocence. Upon initial judgement, one would assume that Disney is merely harmless family entertainment.
The article “The Science of Shopping” written by New Yorker staff writer Malcom Gladwell, is based on retail anthropologist and urban geographer Paco Underhill. Underhill studies the shopping characteristics through frequently watched surveillance tapes to help store managers improve the setup of their goods and services. Through those footages he evaluated his observations and the statistics to help define his theories with the purpose to make sellers conform to the desires of the shoppers. Underhill, an insightful and revolutionary man, provides a view of science to displaying merchandise and creates a positive experience for both the buyer and seller. I agree that Underhill’s scientific theories; the Invariant Right, Decompression
I find the notion that we should “occupy Black Friday””(Andrew Leonard’s “Black Friday: Consumerism vs. Civilization”). According to Leonard one act that a conscientious consumer could do would be a strike that would result in more layoffs, pay cuts, bankruptcies, and foreclosures. Walmart would take a hit of course, however, so would Walmart employees. NEED CITATION
In modern Western civilization, based on Aldous Huxley’s personal views, he implied warnings about the future of modern society throughout Brave New World. Huxley implied the dangers of technology, a big government, degrading humanity and its implication; therefore, modern citizens should be consequently thinking those dangers and how it still applies to modern civilization. If Huxley observed the daily life of modern students in western civilization, he would point out how life in Brave New World is similar to life today through technology, consumption, and how we see each other. Consumerism makes the community and economy stable, which is the goal of the society in Brave New World. In the novel, the buying and selling of goods and services are important to them in their consumer economy.
