“The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story from Richard Connell. About a man named Sanger Rainsford, and his adventures on an island. In his adventures, he meets a strange man, lives three days being hunted, and successfully lives. Rainsford was in his thirties and had been hunting all his life, in this short story, Rainsford is the person being hunted. When Sanger Rainsford meets a strange man after being thrown off a yacht, and landing on an island, the author states, “Rainsford’s first impression was that the man was singularly handsome; his second was that there was an original, almost bizarre quality about the general’s face.” Rainsford also states that “Whenever he looked up from his plate he found the general studying him, appraising …show more content…
“I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve.” He said through tight teeth.” On the first night, of being hunted by the general named Zaroff, Rainsford made a very long trail for Zaroff to follow. Rainsford walked for two whole hours trying to push Zaroff off of his trail. On the second night, Rainsford created a Malay mancatcher, which then caught Zaroff and injured Zaroff’s shoulder. “It was flight now, a desperate, hopeless flight, that carried him on for hours.” Rainsford also found a quicksand pit, and was able to trick Zaroff’s best hound to fall into the quicksand by creating a Burmese tiger pit. On the third night, Ivan, Zaroff’s blind and deaf friend was following Rainsford. Ivan had all of the other hounds that Zaroff had kept at his country house. “But the hope that was Rainsford’s brain when he climbed died, for he saw in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet.” The author exclaims here, that Rainsford was being chased by general Zaroff before Ivan got out the hounds and started chasing him. Also on the third day, Ivan, Zaroff, and the hounds chased Rainsford to the edge of a cliff, and Rainsford figured that it was better to jump than face all three of …show more content…
“A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there. “Rainsford!” Screamed the general. “How in God’s name did you get here?”. Rainsford had been hiding in the curtains for a while, because he was dry when Zaroff found him hiding. “The general sucked in his breath and smiled. “I congratulate you,” he said. “You have won the game.” General Zaroff had said that his game was to hunt people and humans for three days. Rainsford won when he showed up at Zaroff’s house. After Zaroff had congratulated him, Zaroff challenged him again with a sword fight, and whoever won would be able to sleep in Zaroff’s bed at his house on the island, and whoever lost would have to leave the island immediately. “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford
He then wondered what to do from there and decided to jump into the sea and swim along the shore to Zaroff’s house. He had been swimming away from the hounds and soon made it to Zaroff’s bedroom to hide and waiting for him to arrive. Zaroff then finished eating and came upstairs. He went to the window then found Rainsford in the curtains and he was shocked to see him there. Zaroff then congratulated Rainsford and “Zaroff said with a deep bow, One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds.
The sea’s waves took him to the beach of the island and there start another survivor story for Rainsford. General Zaroff refused him to be the hunted after he used to be the hunter. After a nice night, Rainsford had spent it
‘I am still a beast at bay,’ he said, in a low, hoarse voice. ‘Get ready, General Zaroff,’” (Connell 232). After making it back to the chateau, or Zaroff’s castle-like House, Rainsford waits to confront the general and challenge him to one final game. After winning, he sleeps victoriously in Zaroff’s bed, fully solidifying his recently gained freedom.
The most dangerous game was written by Richard Connell in 1924. It is a short story which has mystery, suspense and adventure. Also, it shows how people do their best to survive in different situations. This story consists of two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story begins on a yacht in the Caribbean Sea.
Zaroff went on about how much he hunts, but he got bored with regular hunting, so he created a new game with a animal with more reason--humans. Zaroff challenges him, a 3 day game where Rainsford has to get hunted by him, or torchered by Zaroff's servant, Ivan. In the end, Rainsford wins the game, then
He is willing to risk his life than to be caught in the hands of Zaroff and his hounds. From these two particular acts, we learn that Rainsford is a courageous man, of one's own accord, commits actions that could lead to possible
Metanoia- A journey that changes one's mind, heart, self or way. A man called Rainsford, liked hunting, that was his main sport. But one night, he fell into the ocean and ended up on a island. He never expected that one man, one choice, one game, would change his civilized world into a wild living.
Here in the story General Zaroff is injured by a trap that Rainsfords set. “But he was not quick enough, the dead tree crashed down and struck the general.(232) This quote shows Irony when in the start of the hunt General Zaroff thought that this was going to be an easy kill and he could continue on. Throughout the story Zaroff and Rainsford both exert arrogance.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
The General then tells Rainford that he will hunt him the next day. The next day Rainsford is equipped with some food and a sharp tactical knife then he is let out into a jungle where Zaroff will follow that
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was justified for killing General Zaroff. Rainsford was a hunter who had fallen off his boat and found a desserted island. On the island he meets a mad named General Zaroff. General Zaroff knew Rainsford was a hunter and Zaroff asked Rainsford to hunt with him but Rainsford didn’t want to. The reason Rainsford didn’t want to hunt was because General Zaroff hunted humans and Rainsford didn’t believe it was right.
When Rainsford had fallen off of the ship into the sea, the way he took care of the scenario and worked against the odds of survival showed the theme of resourcefulness. Two life threatening moments when Rainsford had to be inventive and quick-witted were when he had created the traps from scratch in order to survive death by general Zarrof’s hands. Throughout the story there were several moments in which general Zaroff actually congrajulates, and compliments Rainsfords accomplishments in being so resourceful. Rainsford, like people in poverty, shows the theme of resourcefulness throughout the whole story. The author conveys the message that even when being pitted against un-beatable odds.
Rainsford can be hunted by Zaroff or beat to death by Ivan the deaf man from before. Rainsford chooses to be hunted and in the end kills Rainsford and winning “The Game.”
“Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea…” (235). Again, Rainsford had to reason with himself. When he heard the pounding paws of the pack and the heavy breathing of the general, he knew that he would have to jump.
Hunting is a skillful sport. “The most dangerous game” written by Richard Cornell show that the hunters can become the hunted. Zaroff demonstrates that he is rich, clever, and quick. First Zaroff is a very rich individual. “So I bought this island (pg 224)” his father had a quarter of a million acres.
