Would you trust someone who kills their best friend for the good of their country or some guy who thinks they knew the leader? Exactly, you would want and trust a leader who would do anything for the good of their country. Julius Caesar was murder by Brutus and the other conspirators but they said it was for the good of Rome. Brutus and Antony both gave a speeches over Julius Caesars death to appeal to the plebeians. Brutus funeral speech was a more effective speech than Antony because his use of ethos, pathos, and logos made the plebeians focus on his words more. In their two funeral speeches for Julius Caesar, Antony and Brutus both appealed to the plebeian’s ethos. Brutus’ speech topped Antony’s in this aspect because of a couple select quotes. Brutus asked the plebeians that “if any, speak, for him have I offended. I pause for a reply” (Shakespeare 3.2 …show more content…
They both had strong speeches in their logos. Brutus told the people that Caesar was killed for a reason by stating “had you rather Caesar were living, and/ die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, above all/ freemen?” (3.2 24-26). Brutus was telling the people that since Caesar are dead, everyone can be free and no one should have to be slaves by force. Even though that Brutus won in ethos and pathos, Antony had a slightly stronger logos appeal. Antony told the people about him trying to make Caesar king. He told the plebeians that he “thrice presented him a kingly crown,/ which he thrice refused” (3.2 105-106). This was saying that Caesar did not take the crown after three times and he maybe did not want to be king. Maybe Caesar really wanted what was best for Caesars funeral. Caesar could have not been ambitious and really had some good views for Rome future. This may have been true but Brutus did not really believe it. Even though this was a little stronger than that of Brutus’, Brutus speech was still on top because his speech won in ethos and
Brutus “the honorable man” vs Antony “the noble man” In a battle of speeches, Brutus and Antony both give their speeches at Caesar’s funeral. In this paper, there will be discussion on the compare and contrast aspect of their speeches. Both Brutus and Antony give amazing speeches, but they both have different tactics when it comes to giving their speeches. In this paper Ethos, Pathos, and logos will be talked about and how each person used them to his advantage.
Julius Caesar: Analysis of Tone in Funeral Speeches MLK, Jr. once said, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends” (Goodreads). In the play Julius Caesar written by William Shakespeare, actions and words are used and spoken against a friend and a rival contributing to the assassination of their fellow friend Caesar. Two people that were very close to Caesar speak out against each other during their funeral speeches. Brutus, who is a “friend” and also a conspirator against Caesar, and Antony who is a very loyal friend to Caesar, use several rhetorical and literary devices as they create tone of proud assertive and defiant manipulation to get the Roman citizens on their side.
Brutus was a traitor to his country because of his display of treason. However, Brutus may have done what was best for Rome, to improve and reestablish his beloved country. Similarly, people may claim that Brutus was, in fact doing what was best for his country, and that murdering Caesar was not a betrayal. He seems to feel that Caesar would not be an asset to Rome and Brutus wants to really improve the country.
For example, Brutus asks the Plebeians if they would rather have Caesar living “and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all freeman?” (III. ii. 24-26.) This quote demonstrates how Brutus used the rhetorical strategy, Logos, to gain more supporters. This form of rhetoric helped the Plebeians put the dangers of Caesar as king into perspective. The Plebeians were easily persuaded to support Brutus.
While Brutus spoke well, but had no real factual standpoint, Antony gave many examples of Caesar’s achievements. In his speech he uses Pathos, Logos, Ethos, and Situational Irony to sway his audience. He uses Brutus’ and Cassius’ precious honor and Caesar’s achievements against them, saying, “When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept./ Ambition should be made of sterner stuff./ Yet Brutus says he was ambitious,/ And Brutus is an honorable man” (3.2.90-93). In this statement and many other statements following the same pattern Antony degrades the honor and the arguments of Caesar’s ambition that were made by Brutus and the other conspirators.
Rhetoric in the Speeches of Brutus and Antony The death of Caesar is a controversial topic and was even more controversial at the time of his funeral when when senators were trying to benefit from his death by getting the Roman citizens on their side. At Caesar’s funeral, two senators gave speeches as an attempt to get the roman people on their side. Out of the two speeches, Marc Antony’s speech was more effective because of his use of appeals and biases, being 100% true and had a larger variety of rhetorical devices.
In the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar one of the main characters Caesar is killed in Scene 3 act 2.Then Brutus and Antony both give speeches about how bad they feel. Brutus gives a good speech by using all three of the rhetorical appeals to persuade the crowd to want to listen to what he say by using logos, ethos, pathos to his advantage. Brutus gives a better speech that draws the audience attention,Antony not as much. Therefor here are some very valid points on why Brutus’s speech used the Rhetorical Appeals better.
At the funeral, both of Caesar’s friends, Brutus and Antony, made a speech. In Brutus’s speech he was very concise and was saying that he did it all for Rome. Brutus used logos and ethos in his speech. To fortify his speech, he used logos which is logic and reason. In his speech, he says listen to my reasons and he goes onto his reasons that Caesar would have become ambitious and enslaved them all.
Antony then steps up to the plate to give his speech. “The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious… He hath brought many captives home to Rome Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:... I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he thrice refuse: was this ambition?”
In the play "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" by Shakespeare, two individuals named Brutus and Antony give a funeral oration to the people of Rome in concern of the justification of Caesars death. Both of them share an opposite view towards the death of Caesar, Antony thinks his death was unjustified, while Brutus believes in the opposite. Despite the fact that Brutus was able to deliver a better ethical appeal. Antony delivers a more persuasive rhetorical speech since he appeals to the crowd more with his emotional and logical appeal Ethical appeal was used by both individuals in their funeral orations, evidently Brutus was able to execute a better ethical appeal than Antony. Brutus wanted to make the people of Rome feel like the death of Caesar was necessary for the sake of Rome.
Brutus’s Idealism Does Brutus’s idealism make him a traitor to Rome or the BIggest Roman Hero? Brutus’s idealism made him believe that Rome was in danger in history and in Shakespeare’s play, “Julius Caesar” which caused him to betray his friend, Caesar. Brutus’s fear for the Roman Republic caused him to betray his friend who may have became a tyrant without being killed. This caused anarchy among them instead of actually helping the republic, good job Brutus. He even says that he fears for the people if they choose Caesar as a king.
The fear that the conspirator had against tyranny was so commanding that it pushed them to murder their emperor. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. Julius Caesar was an emperor of Rome, a renowned military leader, and a beloved friend to all of his subjects. Cassius created a conspiracy that feared tyranny and what Caesar would become if he gained more power. Cassius corrupted Brutus, who was a long-time friend of Caesar 's, to betray him and join the conspiracy.
Brutus claims were the opposite of Antony. Brutus claims was to convince the citizens that Caesar was a communist type of leader. Brutus says in his speech “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more”. He is claiming that Caesar was not good enough for Rome. Brutus makes another of the same claim, saying that Caesar is not enough for Rome saying, “with this I depart— that, as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall please my country to need my death”.
Marcus Junius Brutus and Mark Antony both deliver speeches to justify the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE and both use Logos and Ethos to convince the Roman citizens to join their sides. Both sides deliver their speeches with vehemence and start by elucidating why Brutus killed Caesar to begin with, why Antony’s desire for revenge is justified, and what the future of Rome will be because of his death. Antony teases the citizens of Rome with the will of Caesar that he holds in hand and claims it will dishonor Brutus and the other conspirators and is also one of his vital uses of Ethos in his speech. Most of the citizens, if not all of them side with Antony and will most likely help him accede to a great title of power in the future and also betray Brutus because of what Antony has them believe, i.e. an ignoble assassin. Brutus and Antony 's speeches were both compelling, although Antony´s speech was more successful, but it is because he was able to manipulate the people of Rome with
Mark Antony on the other hand, wasn’t such a bad guy after all. The speech he gave at Caesar's’ funeral was great. He on the other hand only had good things to say. During Brutus’ speech at Caesar's funeral, he did some weird things.
