What is one of the most used items in the United States, or even the world? What do you use most often to get around from one place to another? What is one of the biggest industries in the world? In this decade, automobiles were changed to help protect people. The Traffic Act is important because it introduces the offenses of careless driving and other issues, which will make drivers more aware and careful on the road. In addition, when the government saw many people were dying due to automobile accidents, the government introduced a law “in 1935 [...] designated pedestrian road crossings, with a bright orange globe on a pole on either side of the road” (Chapman 110). In addition, Chrysler had to adjust the ways of their company to survive the depression: “Chrysler’s success during the Depression [which…] came mostly from Plymouth, its low-cost brand [due to the fact that] Plymouths were one of the cheapest - most popular - cars in the U.S. [in] 1939” (Chapman 124 and 133). This shows how Chrysler dealt with the severe conditions, similar to General Motors, because both companies used lower-priced cars to increase profit. These companies were just a few that found the way to keep their businesses going through tough conditions and were able to compete during the crisis. Furthermore, “during the 1930s British automotive production continued to increase steadily [...] so the smaller companies were not forced to compete for a
When the stock market crashed many were unable to pay their debts not only to their stock purchases but also to their banks. Without payments to the loans given out, banks began to fail. Additionally, the gap between upper and lower classes greatly widened, which only increased the economic issues. On top of everything occurring, a drought developed in the Great Plains that created the “Dust Bowl” and destroyed the agriculture business. The sources of downfall in the Great Depression can be traced to the stock market failure, bank failure, farm failure, and job market failure.
There were many noticeable components that contributed to the advancement and growth of the United States such as: industrialization, the Great Depression, and war. Of the many occurrences, technology had the single greatest impact on the continued evolution of the United States. The new inventions, new discoveries, and new innovation led to greater economic growth and wealth that the American people experienced during 1920-1940. Kyvig (2002) has argued that automobile ownership tripled during the 1920s, and by the end of the decade four families out of five owned an automobile.
Easterbrook explains why the program of road fatalities is being ignored by society (1). According to Gregg Easterbrook’s article, “Road Kill”, he writes that “the first fundamental difference between harm because of accidents and harm because of deliberate action; the second, society’s strange assumption that traffic fatalities cannot be avoided” (1). He writes that, because, unlike terrorism, car crashes were planned to cause harm. Easterbrook writes that
Some of the larger companies such as John Deere, International and Allis Chalmers had built up enough revenue from investors that they were able to stay open. Many of those companies are still in operation to this day
How did Tin Lizzie, a revolutionary vehicle created by Henry Ford, leave its tire tracks in the world? Cars were perceived as an extravagance for the wealthy during the turn of the 20th century. But it wasn't all doom and gloom. People found creative ways to survive, such as bartering goods and services, and repurposing used materials for new things. Additionally, the difficult times of the Great Depression taught us a great deal about resilience, as people found ways to adapt and persevere during some of the most difficult times in history. We can all learn a great deal from the lessons of the Great Depression and use it as a reminder of how far we've come. However, the Great Depression was not only detrimental to the economy.
One important effect of the Great Depression was how it made people and families resourceful. That quality is largely a part of the memoir Digging In, where a man who lived during the Depression talked about his family's frugalness, and how they had to "cut back
While there were many reforms between 1920-and 1970, the reforms made during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1960s have had the most longer lasting effect on the United States.
