The American Civil War that was started due to the controversy over slavery in 1861, was won by The Union supported by President Lincoln against the Confederate states. President Lincoln’s original goal during the civil war was to reunify the nation as quickly as possible and help both sides come to an understanding. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the newly formed United States’ reconstruction era began. The Reconstruction era was put into effect by the Congress in 1866 and lasted until 1877. The Union’s victory in the Civil War had given African Americans a new sense of hope, devastated the southern economy, and eased the history of disunity in American political life. One of reasons the confederacy failed was because the U.S. Congress, with Lincoln’s support, proposed the 13th amendment which would abolish slavery in America. Although the confederate peace delegation was unwilling to accept a future without slavery, the radical and moderate Republicans designed a way to takeover the reconstruction program. The Radical Republicans wanted full citizenship rights for African Americans and wanted to implement harsh reconstruction policies toward the south. The radical republican views made up the majority of the Congress and helped to pass the 14th amendment which guaranteed equality under the law for all citizens, and protected freedmen from presidential vetoes, southern state legislatures, and federal court decisions. In 1869, Congress passed the fifteenth amendment stating that no citizen can be denied the right to vote because of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” To destroy the confederacy and make the south rejoin the union, extreme legal measures such as passing amendments needed to be taken by the government to affirm Union’s power over the south. The government also successfully being able to pass these amendments created a less discriminatory society and helped the south ease their beliefs on slavery, so that it could be easier for them to reunite with the
The year is 1865, the Civil War has ultimately come to an end, thus eventually leading to a new chapter in American history. The Thirteenth Amendment, passed by former president Lincoln, permanently abolished slavery all throughout the Union and Confederate states. Undoubtedly, it became the solution to reconstruct the states back together, yet it brought misfortune to the freedmen and their families. As a result, great tension and hatred instantly emerged within Southern states as African Americans shared the land now equivalent to American citizens with rights. However, freedom came with a high price.
As there were sectional differences among the Union and Confederate states, the Civil War altered and affirmed American principles as a result of presidential decisions that were inspired by events occurring in the war. The Civil War spawned after the South seceded from the Union due to the South not being able to participate in the decision of the next president as well as over the idea that slavery might be abolished. Abraham Lincoln established the 13th amendment, in which the amendment states that slavery shall not exist in the United States, thus affirming the principle that the government has the power to make decisions based on protecting the rights of people and that all men are created equally. The civil war, starting in 1861, lasted 4 years. Afterwards, reconstruction in the south begun, but 15 years later, 1880, marked the end of reconstruction altogether, leaving both sides effected. Between the years 1860 and 1880, the civil war and its aftermath transformed relationships and progress in America. The Union tried to enforce a positive integration for the African Americans but faced resistance from the South.
After the Emancipation Proclamation the North now had a unifier, the emancipation of southern slaves. As the Civil War continued it became less about securing the Union but instead the liberation of slaves, this was supported by the majority of Northerners as they were strongly anti-slavery from before the war. Once the War was over and the reconstruction of the United States began three amendments were added to the Constitution highlighting the rights freed slaves now possessed. The 13th amendment banned slavery in any recognized American territory, the 14th gave citizenship to all freed slaves and their children, and the 15th gave freed male slaves the right to vote. These amendments constitutional overthrew the previous system of racial
A few days after the civil War ended, President Lincoln was assassinated and never had the chance to implement his Reconstruction plan. The Reconstruction Era occurred in the period of 1865 to 1877 under the reign of President Andrew Johnson who was the predecessor of President Lincoln. Congress was not scheduled to convene until December 1865, which gave Johnson eight months to pursue his own Reconstruction policies. Under his Reconstruction policies, the former Confederate states were required to join back into the Union and heal the wounds of the nation.
The Civil War, from 1861-1864, was a collection of brutal battles between the North and South as a result of their sectional differences. Although the North won the military victory against the South, the South was able to keep many of its policies in place after the Civil War. During the Reconstruction Period, 1865-1877, it was evident that the South won the Civil War in many ways because of their political and social policies that they implemented or kept in place. While the 13th through 15th amendments changed social issues for a period of time in the South by allowing more opportunities and rights for former slaves, the South continued their social dominance over black people. Also, politically, near the beginning of Reconstruction and
Gaby Striano Social Studies 807 10 October, 2017 Reconstruction The Civil War was the bloodiest war America has ever faced. The southern states were destroyed, and the Confederacy couldn’t help them. The serious damage and divided country caused a period called Reconstruction. Reconstruction was a period of eleven years after the Civil War, used to rebuild and reunite the U.S.
(Dattel) The Confederacy was militarily outnumbered by the dominant Union States and therefore lost the Civil war. The outcome of the American Civil War demonstrated the strength of the federal government, as their legitimate approach caused the preservation of the American States as a unity. Additionally, they immediately set a foundation for the emancipation of the Black community by implementing the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment in the upcoming years. These amendments were part of the Reconstruction period, the period where the Republicans tried to protect the 'freedmen' and create political uniformity, in specific by impeding the rebellious South to progress in their return in the political system.
The Confederates may have tried to re-enslave the people that were now considered free. Lincoln felt that his Emancipation Proclamation would be ignored by the courts because of when it was established. If the courts did not accept the President’s Proclamation then, the Confederate States may have been able to reinstitute slavery. If this happened, it would have been more difficult to pass the following Amendments that further instated equality. The Fourteenth Amendment passed three years after the Thirteenth.
The South laid in ruins mainly because the majority of the battles during the Civil War were fought on the land of the Southern States. Reconstruction is a time of hope and rebuilding for both the North and the South. President Lincoln is determined to unify the United States. He put forth a plan of action in 1863. His plan was called “The Ten-Percent Plan.”
Peter Schroeder Dr. Christopher Marshall Modern United States History 2/2/17 Writing Assignment 1: The African-American Experience with Reconstruction Reconstruction among the south refers to the point in time which the United States was attempting to establish a relationship between the union and the rebels. The Union had won the civil war, so the next step was to begin to mend the broken relationship between the north and the south. Though historians cannot agree on when it began, there is merit in saying that it started before the end of the Civil War. After victory, had been solidified for the Union, attention of President Lincoln turned towards reconstruction.
Reconstruction was a period of time dedicated to rebuilding the nation after the Civil War. The war ended with the South being defeated and their economy being devastated. Many Southerners struggled after the war with rebuilding their land and lives. The President and Congress had to decide the terms for which the former Confederate states would be permitted to join the Union. President Lincoln’s plan for reuniting the country was found in the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction.
During the late 1800s, because the South had been decimated by the end of the Civil War, .the Reconstruction Period was initiated to aid the South’s recovery. Although the Civil War did abolish slavery and unify the North and the South, the war not resolve racial prejudice, the South’s damage, and the African Americans’ economic instability. The Reconstruction Period was initiated in order to prevent economic instability and the structural ruin, because since slavery was abolished, and the South was completely dependent on slaves, therefore slaves could not work for the South to maintain the economy, and slaves also could not fix up the damages done to the structures done to the South during the war. By starting the Freedmen’s Bureau and passing
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
Reconstruction is the time period after the Civil War, where the country attempted to improve the Union. There were many successes, but what also comes along with success is failure. During the reconstruction many failures were present; such as the lack of racial equality and blatant racism towards blacks, a failing economy in the South, and tense relations between the North and the South. This created a very intense and challenging period of time for the Union.
