Drought has hit California hard. There is barely any more water remaining, “the Golden State has depleted its water resources so much that it 'll all be gone in about one year”(Jay Famiglietti). This NASA scientist used satellites to figure out that most of our water sources are completely depleted. A few weeks ago, there was a huge fire called “The Valley Fire which scorched more than 76,000 acres across Lake, Napa and Sonoma counties, killed four civilians, injured four firefighters and destroyed nearly 2,000 buildings”(Kale Williams). The Valley Fire grew so fast, since there was a terrible amount of dry brush and trees, which easily caught the whole area on fire, and that’s also how the fire grew 10,000 acres over a few hours. This mess
Several studies have been conducted to characterize the lasting impacts that wildfires have had on water quality. The Rough Fire that occurred in California during the summer of 2015, was an intense fire and one of the largest that the state has had recently. Since the proposed project is to quantify the degree to which the Rough Fire impaired water quality in the affected area, several water quality parameters will be examined. It has been shown that sediment loads, erosion, and nutrient inputs increase after intense wildfires and that the temperature of water may increase and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels may decrease. To understand the degree to which water quality impairment has occurred in the affected Rough Fire area, four water quality
Our beautiful 31st state, California, is in a major drought. What is causing the valley to sink more than it ever has in recent years? “Sipping California Dry” authored by Matt Richtel, goes beyond the issues at hand by interviewing the farmers themselves, detailing exactly what is happening in the golden state with pictures that show just how bad it is in California. This drought is a real issue, and the author works very hard to bring to light certain aspects of it that we may not know about in a detailed, informative way.
In the article “California Drought: Governor Jerry Brown Issues Water Rules” for the Cable News Network, Ray Sanchez explains how Governor Jerry Brown is taking drastic measures to reduce California’s water usage. To do that, he has established many rules and restrictions on the people of California, as well as its businesses and farms. Governor Brown states that this drought needs extraordinary actions, as it has shown in the Sierra Nevada Mountains which has lost snow and are now covered with dry and brown grass. I agree with Sanchez and Governor Brown about imposing these rules and restriction on the people of California because these restrictions are going to help guide California out of the drought or at least help maintain and not let this drought get any worse than it already is. I agree with the author because in the article he provides good support to show why these rules need to be enacted upon
Wildfire is a natural process in the forests of Southwest Colorado. However, Colorado and much of the United States is experiencing unnatural behavior in wildfire due to climate change and human intervention. Forest fires in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado are bigger and hotter than they were historically. This is a threat to both the environment and human populations. Wildlife, watersheds, and people living and recreating here are all affected.
Over the past few months, California has been hit with a slew of storms and now the Oroville Dam is overflowing with water. This would not have been as bad a situation if the emergency spillways were not damaged by erosion; or as the anchorman said “... erosion has opened a hole the almost size of a football field and it’s almost 40 feet deep…”. The towns downstream were evacuated because of the potential for flash flooding for the 75 miles downstream from the dam. Workers then started crushing rocks to reinforce and fix the damaged spillways and to delay the potential of flash flooding. Over 200,000 people were evacuated, highways were filled, and gas pumps were emptied in the panic.
The North Valley fire was one of the most destructive wildfires to ever burn the state of California. It started september 12 in Lake County, Califorinia a community 100 miles north of the city of San Francisco. The fire began around 1:00 pm in the afternoon,by 6:00 it already destroyed more than 10,000 acres. Entire towns and thousands of residents along a 35-mile stretch of State Route 29 were forced to evacuate, many running as the fire came down the hill toward their homes. California fire spokesman Dan Berlant said “wind gusts that reached up to 30 miles per hour sent embers raining down on homes and made it hard for firefighters to stop the blaze from advancing” .This
California dry from all of its water people trying to sell or just moving anywhere else. The drought has been going on for many years and slowly California is running out of water. If the government of California does not do anything the people may start to attack farmer to get water or the government may go for the people. The farmers are using all the water and people are losing their water.
Has the lack of water supply affected your life in the past three years? California has been in a drought recently, and there has been a great decrease in citizen water possession. The state should regulate water usage because people are using too much water, and it is affecting other people. There have been many cases of water shortages in communities. “For Angelica Gallegos, the worst part has been going without a shower for five months.”
The cause of all this is the unregulated pumping of groundwater out of aquifers by California 's farmers in the Central Valley. As water is drawn out of these reservoirs, their structural integrity fails and they consequently collapse, causing the land above to sink. Once the aquifers collapse, their maximum capacity is reduced, so they cannot be fully refilled during wet periods. Less water will be stored and pumped, which is a major concern for drought years in the future.
Farmers in California make 90% of tomados 99% of almonds and 95% of broccoli. That means when there is no more water the stores are going to rise the prices because they are the only ones left. Fires are very common in California because it’s very hot. Every year California gets less and less rain. people in California should be limiting water uses like taking shorter showers and when you wash your dishes save the water and give the water to your plants.
Due to a shortage of water in California, the governor has proposed a diversion system to move water from the Northern California to Southern California. As for this will probably help since there is more farming, and more climate changes in Northern California. This will make a big bad and good difference. First, it will be a bad situation because then the farmers will not have the water they need for their crops, animals, etc.
Thomas, as a native Californian has seen the ups and downs of the Santa Ana winds. She has experienced what good they bring to the deserts and canyons, as well as the bad they bring to the new developments that spring up every year. She sees how the winds blow massive natural wildfires across the deserts scorching the low lying shrubbery that grows there. Thomas knows that these fires are what keep the ecosystem turning and re-growing every year. “The padre’s staff--require the heat of a flame to crack open the seed pods.”
Groundwater pumping by farmers should be regulated by the state of California. If civilians in the state are being required to cut water usage back by twenty-five percent (Dimick, 2015), then the farmers should have to as well. The drought is a serious issue for California and a large portion of the Western part of the United States. That whole region of the country should be doing as much as they can to preserve their water resources until the drought (hopefully) ends. Otherwise, this could turn into a major issue for the entire country, not just that state.
People in this society believes every statement that is said by an important person true. In California, new reports has claimed California to be in a drought due to the waste of water. However, is California’s drought report an actual problem? Ever since 2013, the news station ABC news have claimed California is in a drought crisis.
California has one of the most severe wildland fire problems in the world. Population, vegetation, topography, and climate all play key roles in the probability of a wildfire occurring. In other words, it’s not a matter of “if” a wildfire will occur, but it’s a matter of “when.” In California, more and more people are choosing to live in communities near wildlands. These wildlands are composed of highly flammable vegetation which can be explosive.
