Causes Of Economic Disorganization

The first government in the U.S. was called the Articles of Confederation. It was the first set of laws after the states became independent. The laws in the Confederation were very weak, and they all contracted each other. It also had a weak central/national government because the states didn’t want to give it too much power like the monarchy with the British. Some weaknesses in the first government were that each state no matter how big or small had only one vote, each state could coin its own money, making it hard to move, and lastly, they could not have a military so it would be hard to fight armed rebellions or militias.

The United States, under the Articles of Confederation, did not have the ability to properly deal with the problems arising within the borders of the country. As written to George Washington by a delegate from the Continental Congress, troops that had fought in the American Revolution were discontent because they were not receiving their payments and Congress did not have the capacity to pay off the country’s debts. (Doc C) The government was unable to pay off the debt of the country because the Continental Congress did not possess the ability to regulate commerce. Rhode Island rejected the proposal of a universal tariff, which would have helped to pay off the debt of the new nation.

The limited powers of the United States central government under the Articles of Confederation, exemplified by events like Shays' Rebellion, significantly influenced the development of the Constitution between 1777 and 1789, leading to the creation of a stronger and more centralized federal government. This transition from a weak and decentralized government to a more powerful federal authority was a direct response to the challenges and shortcomings experienced under the Articles of Confederation. Believe it or not, the Constitution was not America 's first form of government. Our country started out with the Articles of Confederation, which were...shall we say... less than perfect. They gave the states much more power than the central government, due to a pervasive fear of strong central governments. This fear stemmed from the reign of the tyrannical King George III, and the founding fathers did not want to give their country the ability to establish another monarchy. In the Articles of Confederation, the central government had no power to tax, regulate trade or commerce, enforce laws, settle disputes between states.

As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

With the Declaration of Independence in 1776, The United States came into existence, and began to establish the role of the new federal government in the fledgling country’s operation and control. Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.

Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.

The United States confronted many problems once they gained their independence from Great Britain.
