Causes Of Pre-Civil War

In May of 1856, a pro-slavery mob reeked havoc on the town of Lawrence, stealing property, demolishing buildings, and even setting the governor’s home on fire. Two days after the attack on Lawrence, a man named John Brown set out for vengeance.

He kills many people who just are in his way. On the night of May 24, 1856, the radical abolitionist John Brown, five of his sons, and three other associates murders five proslavery men brutally with knives and swords. Just four years later, he seizes the arsenal at the Harpers Ferry, take weapons from there, and destruct many properties of the town. By destructing properties and murdering many innocent people, he starts a guerrilla war. He kills many people and scares many others.

On October 16, 1859, John Brown lead twenty-one men, made up of both white and black men, to attack a federal armory at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. Brown’s plan was to steal weapons to give to freed slaves nearby and then return back to the mountains to do more raids to free more slaves. To do this, Brown and his men stopped man trains and took over many bridges to stop all people from coming in and stopping them. After this, Brown’ men got to the federal armory and took the weapons and captured hostages. John Brown thought that if the story got out about the weapons he stole, slaves would rebel against their slave owners and run away to meet him to join the fight.

The mission of this small group led by John Brown was simple, form a rebellion against slavery using acts of terrorism. In 1859 21 of John Brown’s followers led an attack on Harper’s Ferry the biggest federal arsenal in what is now known as West Virginia. There he killed many men infront of their children and wives. Word spread out how he was raiding Harper’s ferry and U.S. marines showed up and overan Brown’s men killing 10 of his men including two of his sons, and also freeing the hostages they were holding

The War was between the two groups known as the Union and the Confederacy (the North and the South respectively). The War between the two groups inevitably occurred due to the issue of slavery. During the Civil War, approximately 620,000 people were killed. Although many were killed this war was a big turning point for the U.S. and played a major role in making us the country we are today.

By the time he got to his 50's, he saw that slavery was not going to end peacefully. This led to an obsession with the idea of serving justice to black people and slaves. John Brown figured that the only way for it to end was for him to go and use force on white slave owners, which consisted of him killing them or hurting them and forcing them to give up their slaves. During this obsession with anti slavery, Brown planned a slave uprising at Harper's Ferry. John Brown started plotting to raid the town of Harper's Ferry and seize guns from the federal armory.

How the Civil War Came to Be Was the Civil War very “civil” at all? The Civil War had many factors that led into it but there was one major factor that started the war. Slavery was one of the biggest factors in the Civil War. There was a big issue that divided the North and South which was slavery. The wide spread of slavery was a big deal to most Americans; but some were not the biggest fans of the concept.

In the United States, during the eighteen-hundreds’, a small group of people believed that slavery was immoral and did many things to abolish it. John Brown, a Caucasian male who was part of this group of people, did two things that many people in United States history didn’t have the passion to do. John Brown’s life was very interesting: His early life and transition to adulthood, his decision to fight for the cause, his actions of violence in Kansas and Harper’s Ferry, along with, the long-lasting effects of these actions led to his hanging. These events were pivotal to the beginning of the Civil War. “John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut, on May 9, 1800, five months after the death of George Washington”(Marrin,7).

In 1859 an abolitionist led a raid of 20 men to a federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia in order to supply slaves with weapons and provoke a slave rebellion (B). This man was named John Brown. Born to an evangelical Christian family, Brown deeply hated slavery and favored military tactics to abolish it (C). Viewed as a martyr in the North and a murderer in the South, he had a great impact on the abolition movement. People even today continue to debate on how to define him.

John Brown a major person in the fight to end slavery "led a band of 18 men into Virginia to seize the federal arsenal there, distribute the captured arms to slaves in the area, and create a general slave uprising."
