During the 1670’s, farmers in Virginia struggled to profit as they depended on tobacco for a source of income. In this early period of colonization, indentured servitude was the most common source of cheap labor. Critically acclaimed author and historian, Lerone Bennett Jr., described this labor system as “the big planter apparatus and a social system that legalized terror against black and white bondsmen” (Bennet). Tied into service bythe promise of land, indentured servants could not profit off their work. By doing so, servants were forced into a continuous cycle of service to provide for themselves and their families.

In the 17th & 18th century, when sailing overseas to living in America; life for most English civilians, was a tremendous suffering. Johannes Hänner and the Hundreds of Indentured Servants are, the treatment of indentured servants varied according to the master, the location the indentured served, and the German immigrants were able to pay for their passage to the American colonies, which was much easier than those who came as indentured servants. In 1619, the first indentured servants were introduced by the Virginia company. Since arriving, many indentures had to work from dusk to dawn out in the tobacco fields of Virginia and Maryland with no pay.

Tobacco exhausted the fertile lands in Virginia because it took all the nutrients from the soil (Bacon’s Rebellion). Since tobacco harmed the land, settlers struggled to gain profit from the growth of the crop. In addition to lower profits, Berkeley’s land grants and the way tobacco grows supplemented to the continuous cycle of indentured servitude. Plantation owners needed cheap labor to grow tobacco, and were unable to fulfill their original contract of land as payment for years of work. During the colonial error, the Native American, and Colonial families were forced into marriage at an early age. The Native American families were small in size, they suffered a high child mortality rate, and their children were forced to start work at an early age. In all respects, the English women were sold to marriage. The father and husband were head of the household. The Colonial family worked together as a unit both socially and economically, as opposed to the families in the south, there family life differed.

Convicts that were leased to plantations experienced much of the same conditions they were subjected to during enslavement. “The prisoners ate and slept on the bare ground, without blankets or mattresses, and often without clothes.” They were forced to live in their own filth, bloodied floors and vermin infested quarters. Punishments were usually carried out with lashings, however, they were subjected to “natural punishments” such as exhaustion, pneumonia, heatstroke, dysentery, malaria and frostbite. Convicts were more vulnerable than free workers, and paid a greater price.

Life of an Indentured Servant Life was not easy in my hometown as there was poverty and hunger everywhere. Introduction: At this point in time in history, indentured servitude wasn’t an uncommon act. Many of those who migrated from Europe to the New World couldn’t pay for their passage and were sold to landowners to pay their dues for passage. They were fed, clothed and given shelter. Those who could afford passage to the New World had no money to survive once they arrived.

Although they have numerous differences their characteristics resulted from one important factor, which is, the reason the settlers came to the New World. This had an impact on the settlement, economically, socially, and politically. Settlements in the Chesapeake region included Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the New Jerseys. The first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution and various other reasons. In this paper we will explore the many roles both male and female colonists as well as Native Africans played. In the colonies gender played a large role in everyday life.

The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. These were founded by similar people but, with their strikingly differences, grew into separate political, economic and social structures. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. They were part of the Anglican religion.

The three main colonies that we hear about are Virginia, Plymouth, and Massachusetts. These three colonies basically define all the others, as each group and its main founder either went for a personal financial gain or to escape religious persecution. Virginia was originally settled by Captain John Smith and grew into a successful trade colony through tobacco. Plymouth was originally founded by the Separatists and was lead by William Bradford. Eventually the dwindling Plymouth joined with Massachusetts which was originally Puritan based.

The early Virginia and New England colonies differed politically, socially, and economically due to the situations that the settlers faced. Throughout many of the letters written about some of the experiences of the earlier settlers, one can easily see a major difference in the way of life of the two colonies. Although many of these colonies differed in the way of life, each colony faced some similar things that they each had to overcome. These challenges made a massive difference in the way that each of the colonies started out and directly influenced the future for both colonies. When these challenges are faced, many of the settlers will create the foundations of their political, social, and economic systems.

The New England and Chesapeake colonies were established during the early 1700s. Despite the population originating from England, the regions had distinct societies. This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.

Misogyny is the dislike of, contempt for, or prejudice of women; Washington Irving has been accused of misogyny because of the treatment of women in his stories and their content. Washington Irving was a writer during the 1800’s, and some of his most popular works include “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Within these tales and other works of Irving’s, aspects of misogyny is discernible, though there is debate about whether the author himself was a misogynist. I believe that the misogyny that is shown throughout a select few of Irving’s works is due in part to the time period, not entirely Irving, himself.
