Initially when I read the essay, I believed that it could only apply to Latino women, due to it being published in a magazine directed towards Latino women, but before I finished reading the passage I realized that her story could apply to anyone struggling to learn their native tongue or a language in general. Chapter 1-15 Four is a Divergent which is a variation of every skill He is Dauntless, Amity,Erudite, and Candor. The people of the the world fear the Divergent they think they are a threat to the society. The people who scan and put the kids through the simulation to figure out what faction you belong to are unpermitted to give up the information even if they are Divergent. Tobias Eaton was Four's real name and he was Divergent and he knew it for a while and so did his father and also his mother.

Chapter 11: Crazy Horse goes on a raiding spree into Crow territory for several weeks along with his brother, Little Hawk, and Red Cloud, High Back Bone, and other Lakota. They dominate every camp they come across and become a real force of the land. Crazy Horse saves many of his fellow warriors over the trip and gains more respect from others. Upon returning home, he receives news that Black Buffalo Woman decided her husband would be a boy named No Water. He becomes heartbroken by her decision and stays in his parents’ lodge for several days.

Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street, “an important, original contribution to civil rights historiography”, discusses the topic of rape and sexual assault towards African American women, and how this played a major role in causing the civil rights movement (Dailey 491). Chapter by chapter, another person's story is told, from the rape of Recy Taylor to the court case of Joan Little, while including the significance of Rosa Parks and various organizations in fighting for the victims of unjust brutality. The sole purpose of creating this novel was to discuss a topic no other historian has discussed before, because according to McGuire they have all been skipping over a topic that would change the view of the civil rights movement.

The book I chose to read for my book review was “ Killing Mr.Griffin”. It is about 5 high school students who hate their english teacher Mr. Griffin and come up with a plan to kidnap him. Their main purpose is to just torture and make Mr. Griffin think he is going to die. The plan takes a tragic turn and results in Mr. Griffin's death. The plan simply falls apart in a domino effect of terror and grief.

Growing up in a Hispanic community, I was exposed to the limitations of females and was taught to know my place. I recall many times in which I saw firsthand the belittlement of women. Beginning in my own home, my father expects my mother to cook, clean, and organize his belongings. As a Hispanic female, I have been surrounded by this mentality. In Latin American countries the corresponding roles of women are justified by the term machismo.

This quarter I read the realistic fiction book, The Batboy by Mike Lupica. This book is a story about a 14 year old boy named Brian Dudley. Son of a former pitcher and an avid baseball fan, Brian gets his dream summer job: the bat boy for his favorite team the Detroit Tigers. When it seems like his summer cannot get any better, his all-time favorite player Hank Bishop is signed to the team. At the beginning, Hank is cold and yells at Brian a lot, but in the end they become friends.

Brown et al., states that the area’s close ties with Mexico due to “family, friends, media, and trade” dissipates the physical border between both countries as the area shares a unique culture (10). One of the strongest aspects of this culture is the fact that Spanish is the primary language in many communities and cities across Texas’s border region. As a matter of fact, some cities across this region have made Spanish part of the local government’s way of governing such as in El Cenizo, Texas. In 1999, the small Texas city declared Spanish as the official language of the town in order to get more people involved in local government, which caused serious controversy around the country (Gorov). Despite the fact the city of Laredo has never declared an official language, there is no doubt that many city services and processes are also communicated in Spanish due to the high prevalence of the language in the community.

Victor Rios begins chapter six by describing the way the Latino boys he studied used masculinity as a rehabilitative tool. He describes how the boys are constantly “questioning” each other’s manhood as a way of proving their own masculinity. “The boys’ social relations with one another and with community members were saturated with expressions and discourses of manhood” (pg.125). Rios continues to describe the affects criminalization and its gendered practices has influenced these young boy’s mentality of what it means to be masculine. In chapter six, the author explains that although the boys had easy access to weapons, they rarely used them because of their clear understanding the consequences associated with such violence.

On the other hand, in Richard Rodriguez “ Public and Private Language”, he talks about how people who are out in public they tend to speak in English and when they are at home they will speak in a language that makes them more comfortable. Both authors struggle in English but in different ways. Tan’s mother has hard time speaking English since it was not her first language.

In the 1920s, the entire culture of The United States was changing as women gained more rights and black jazz came into popularity. Along with this culture shift, language changed as well. As the 1920s grew, more women’s rights had come into popular culture,“The movement of the ‘liberated woman’ had an immense influence on the country’s language” (Bulletin).

Generalizations take after specific individuals for the duration of their lives. Judith Ortiz Cofer is a Latina who has been stereotyped and she delineates this in her article, "The myth of the Latin lady: I just met a young lady named Maria. " Cofer depicts how pernicious generalizations can really be. Perusers can understand Cofer 's message through the numerous explanatory interests she employments.

“If a person, Chicana or Latina, has a low estimation of my native tongue, she also has a low estimation of me. Often with mexicanas y Latinas we’ll speak English as a neutral language. Even among Chicanas we tend to speak English at parties or conferences. Yet, at the same time we’re afraid the other will think we’re agingadas because we don’t speak Chicano Spanish.” These sentences are mostly in English, but were oppressed by the three words “mexicanas y Latinas.”

It can be quite easy to make assumptions about one’s character upon first glance or first encounter, but often these first assumptions are not a direct representation of a person’s true disposition. In the short story, “The Diary of a Madman” by Guy de Maupassant, an esteemed magistrate is being remembered for the model citizen he was, having lived a life that no one could subject to criticism. However, a notary uncovered his diary in a drawer in his home, in which he entailed his tendencies and cravings for murder that no one had expected of him. Within this text, the author uses the character of the magistrate to convey the theme that one’s true character cannot be decided from external appearance or actions. From the beginning of the text, it is made evident that this man was revered as the most well-respected judge in all of France.

Shackelford English 1113, Section 101 1 September 2016 Analysts of “How Male and Female Students Use Language Differently” An essay written by Deborah Tannen called “How male and females students use language differently”, is describing how they talk and interact with others. The writer presents different studies on how language changes based on a certain person. The essay states that men are more aggressive and talkative, while women are calm and modest about talking about the views they share.
