Chapter Summary Of The Book 'Small Black Notebook'

Rusty Crowder Period 2 Quarter 2 Commentary #1 The Long Walk by Stephen King Pages 1-25 (Chapter 1) The story starts off with the main character, Raymond Davis Garraty. He is a 16-year-old boy from Maine. The only one competing from Maine, where the long walk takes place, and is supported by big crowds of people.

The book "Black in White Spaces" by Elijah Anderson is a perceptive investigation of the experiences of Black people navigating primarily White spaces. The effects of these experiences on Black people's sense of self and interactions with others are discussed in detail in Chapters 1-4. In the first chapter, Anderson sets the stage by describing his own experiences growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood and the impact it had on his sense of identity. He argues that these experiences are common among African Americans who live in predominantly white spaces, and that they face unique challenges in navigating these environments (Anderson 5).

I chose the book Black Hearts by Jim Frederick because it was recommended to me by First Lieutenant Smaldone. He had to read it as course material during his training at TBS (The Basic School). Officers go to TBS following Officer Candidate School where newly commissioned officers learn to lead and inspire fellow Marines. Black Hearts is a non-fiction story about the 502nd Infantry Regiment’s deployment to a region south of Baghdad, Iraq and it’s breakdown of leadership, morale, and discipline. The Unit was known as “The Black Heart Brigade.”

After reading chapter 11, it’s sufficient to say Zach Wahls has a very strong sense of right and wrong. During this chapter, he talks mainly about defining “morality” through the use of moments in his life. He uses these experiences to help break down the idea of what is truly immoral and what society believes is immoral. The examples he uses range from simple things like drinking soda and smoking.

Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street, “an important, original contribution to civil rights historiography”, discusses the topic of rape and sexual assault towards African American women, and how this played a major role in causing the civil rights movement (Dailey 491). Chapter by chapter, another person's story is told, from the rape of Recy Taylor to the court case of Joan Little, while including the significance of Rosa Parks and various organizations in fighting for the victims of unjust brutality. The sole purpose of creating this novel was to discuss a topic no other historian has discussed before, because according to McGuire they have all been skipping over a topic that would change the view of the civil rights movement.

In the words of Steve Lopez, “You're only as good or bad as your latest attempt to make some connection with the world.” The novel, The Soloist, by Steve Lopez is an insight to Lopez’s time helping and connecting with Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless schizophrenic. When Lopez meets Nathaniel he is awed by his musical talent and soon discovers he once attended Julliard, a prestigious school of performing arts. Lopez’s story was transformed into a film produced in 2008. Lopez’s character in the book and film share similarities and differences in his personal life, attitude towards Nathaniel, and struggles that contribute to the overall theme of the novel.

In chapter 9, Brooks introduces Samuel Johnson through a brief biography of his distressing life. Johnson’s life is seemingly one of hardship from the beginning as he is the son of an “unsuccessful bookseller” and “uneducated mother” (p 213). More so, he is described as a “frail infant,” one who was infected with tuberculosis by the wet nurses’ milk. Brooks subsequently discusses Johnson’s appearance, “ugly and scarred” (ibid), as a result of the small pox he developed. Eventually, Johnson becomes a Christian at Oxford (p 215), where he “emphasized that worldly pursuits fail to fill the heart” (ibid).

The story “Everyday Use” has some symbolic meaning incorporated into it. A symbol, according to Kirszner and Mandell (2012), is when something in the story takes on a particular meaning. The three key symbols that were present were Dee’s name; the dasher; and the quilts. Wangero was symbolic to Dee because it represented freedom.

Symbols in Looking for Alaska. In John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska there are many symbols ranging from cigarettes to flowers. The symbols in this novel play a major role in helping to better understand the novel and it’s meaning.

In addition to the monkeys another symbolism in the novel was when Lorraine, John and the Pigman went to zoo and seen the bats in the cages. The bats in the cage symbolized how John and Lorraine are in cages and are trapped because they don’t fit into society’s idea of how they should be. They also don’t meet their parent’s standards of them and feel like they are in a cage, trapped because they can’t make them happy. When the Pigman told John and Lorraine about the story about the wife and the bridge and the killer it symbolized how the reader doesn’t really know who was responsible for Mr. Pignati’s death and the betrayal of John and Lorriane like the wife in the story. Another symbol in the story is the breakable glass, marble pig collection of Mr. Pignati’s.

1) Isaac Hourwich’s purpose in writing this book is to oppose the claims of the Immigration Commission as there are also many stereotypes of Immigrants created by Native born Americans and also challenge the findings of the Immigration Commission. Hourwich uses his economic aspects to explain that Immigrants do not cause the labor market to decline, decreases wages, and increase unemployment in the United States. Most of the native-born Americans fear that as the rate of Immigration increases, it might hurt the American wage-earners. Therefore, there is an assumption that most American workers made was that “undesirable” Immigrants should be out of the country and keep the American workers busy. (82)

In chapter 1 Jay Heinrichs, the author of the book, to uses examples from his family life to help introduce the central theme. He starts with an example of arguing with his son about toothpaste, Heinrichs’s argument with George reaches a clear resolution unlike some of the other examples given in the text. Heinrichs does this to show readers a way to argue while showing intelligence. Having established the importance of controversy and rhetoric in an everyday setting, Heinrichs states that rhetoric is an “unavoidable a part of life”. This is where he introduces the central idea of the book which is that rhetoric is necessary and unavoidable part of life he goes on to state that

The cat, the L shaped barn, the red pickle dish, and the elm tree all have an important symbolic meaning to the story. Wharton uses all these objects as a way of creating and developing the theme of failure in this story. One major, but not the most important symbol used in this novel is the Fromes family cat. The cat is used symbolically throughout the book.

I have read the chapter 7 and chapter 8 of book written by Deborah Stone. In these chapters the author Stone has described the facts about the values of symbols and numbers in development and change of public welfare policies by the politicians. According to Stone, symbolic representation is the embodiment of issue definition in politics. According to the author, a symbol is anything that stands for something else. The importance of a symbol is not characteristic for it, but rather is put resources into it by the general population who use it.

Gazebo - Raymond Carver Everyone has, at some point in their lives, had a strained relationship with someone, whether it has been with a friend, a lover or merely an acquaintance. Contrary to other relationships, a dysfunctional love affair is of great significance, as it can give rise to strong feelings of unhappiness and depression if one is betrayed. This is attributable to the robust and substantial bond between the two partners concerned. In Raymond Carver’s short story, “Gazebo”, a dysfunctional romance and also its consequences are depicted. The short story portrays the two spouses, Duane and Holly, who are experiencing an appreciable weakening of their relationship owing to Duane’s extramarital affair.
