Movie: Saving Mr. Banks
Character: Pamela Travers (Helen Goff)
The story of Pamela Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, was portrayed in the movie Saving Mr. Banks. In the movie, the struggle of Walt Disney in asking for P. Travers’ approval is quite a struggle but a deeper struggle was depicted. In this, we will look deeper on P. Travers’ personality and have a better understanding of it using my chosen theory.
The Family of Pamela Travers/Helen Goff Helen Goff (or more known as Pamela Travers) is the first-born child of her parents. Her father, Travers Goff, works in a bank while her mother, Margaret Goff, is a housewife. In the movie, it is shown that her father is a sweet and loving father but he has problems with being an alcoholic. It is also shown in the movie that she has a close relationship with her father. This may also be evident on how they have similarities especially in terms of being imaginative and a bit of a dreamer.
Their family had a problem when her father was fired from his work that they need to transfer residence. They moved to a house and have a life which is far from what her family used to have. This has been heartbreaking for her mother but her father showed a positive attitude towards it. His father had a hard time balancing his work due to his alcoholism. Cati Nelson, she is from Joliet Illionis, born November fourteeth. She atteneded Joleit West high school. For Cati, high school was not her thing, she actually hated it. The reason why she hated it because people were too immature for her level of mature. Cati grew up with a Stiffed- neck background.
Both Brandon's parents were heavy drug users. Brandon and his sisters are placed in foster care and eventually, their mom is given full custody due to becoming completely sober. Brandon's mom had a very strained relationship with Brandon in particular because of his use with drugs. She felt like it was her fault that her son turned out this way. Brandon's family history also yields a long history of depression.
They never getting tired caring for him and loving him because they are a family that will stick together no matter what the challenges that they were facing. To tell the truth, there are more to life than being sad and feel lonely in this world. Finally, Papa drinks less and he is going back to his old self again. He has changed intrapersonally because he is back to his old self again. Everyone is happy when Papa started to go out and talk to his family again.
Growing up with an alcoholic father and having to starve when they couldn 't afford a plate of meal. Yet, even through the toughest time her dysfunctional family is going through she stills finds a way to see the good within it.
Through digging deeper the readers know learned what is was like growing up in the McCandless household. Chris McCandless and his sister, Carine, lived with Walt McCandless, their father, and Billie McCandless, their mother, in Virginia. Carine McCandless explains how their parents, “[...W]orked all the time,” (Krakauker 107) and how it was very stressful for them, because their parents had just started their own consulting firm. Chris and Carine McCandless became very close when growing up because they, “[...L]earned to count on each other when Mom and Dad weren 't getting along,” (Krakauer 107). McCandless was very protective of his sister and would hold her hand, and he even waited for her after school so they could walk home together.
R/s Glenda Baker is totally disabled, she can’t walk long distance and she can’t stand for long period. R/s Ms. Baker has two crushed discs above her tailbone, three bulging disc in the back of her neck, Fibromyalgia, and her spine is shape of an S. R/s she suffers from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, severe depression, anxiety and panic attacks. R/s Ms. Baker takes medication for all her conditions. R/s Ms. Baker is living with her daughter, Lindsay and she is mentally and emotionally abusive to Ms. Baker. R/s Lindsay curses at Ms. Baker and calls her names like “a fucking bitch.”
Jazzlyn is a motivated, conscientious and enthusiastic fourth grader who displays a sense of seriousness about school. Jazzlyn puts forth her best effort in all that she does, and positive demeanor radiates to her peers. Jazzlyn is kind, empathetic and supportive of her peers, and able to navigate social interactions independently. Jazzlyn holds herself accountable for her own learning by asking questions when she needs further clarification and uses both teachers and peers as resources. As a reader, Jazzlyn is enthusiastic and enjoys reading books across genres.
Throughout ‘A bridge to Wiseman’s cove’, James Moloney introduces to characters who are in despair. However, the reader is shown how the characters are rescued with the support of each other. The protagonist Carl Matt is in despair after moving to Wattle Beach, because his mother and sister leave him and his younger brother. Joy, a middle-aged woman is also portrayed as a character who is afraid to give love to her daughter. Another individual, Graham Duncan, commonly known as Skip is a character who is rescued from despair.
Many people live by a specific motto. It is their guide through life, and usually affects their life’s future direction. In The Glass Castle, By Jeannette Walls, the grandmother, Lily Walls’s motto of “push and pray” is the driving force that determines the direction of her future. She pushes and prays throughout the book, but can most prominently be seen when she ties to push back against her father, is working hard to publish her school newspaper, and spends all her effort to raise enough money to move to New York. Jeannette pushes and prays very hard to push back against her father’s detrimental behaviors, creating an extra drive for her to leave the house.
Sandra and her younger sister Cindy were dropped off with their paternal grandmother Lorraine. Her mother remarried and Sandra and Cindy went to live with them. Unfortunately this marriage didn’t last long either. Sandra mother Vicky was very abusive and was a prescription drug addict.
Mary Poppins: Not Your Average Children’s Book Children’s books are often categorized as safe, sweet, and full of laughter. In many ways, Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers fulfils these labels. Mrs. Banks is usually cheerful and doting on the children. The characters from cherry tree lane always provide some type of amusement. Mary Poppins herself—while stern—makes the children feel safe while encouraging them to explore new things.
This kind of childhood caused each of them to have their own problems to work out as well, and as they grew older they started to find their own ways to escape their painful lives physically and
