The Canterbury Tales The narrator of The Canterbury Tales characterizes several religious figures as deeply hypocritical. Three characters that are the most hypocritical are the pardoner, the monk, and the nun. The first character that is hypocritical is the pardoner. The pardoner is characterized as hypocritical because he tells a tale about greed being a horrible thing, but he is a greedy person warning other about the evils of being greedy. The pardoner states, “What! Do you think, as long as I can preach/ And get their silver for the things I teach./ (ln. 57-58). The monk is classified as hypocritical because he is the complete opposite of what he is supposed to be. The monk says, “Many a dainty horse he had in stable./ His bridle, when he rode, a man might hear/ (ln. 172-173). This shows that the monk is only concerned about is money and it also shows that he is not a quiet person like he should be. A monk is not supposed to care for money and is supposed to remain silent. However throughout The Canterbury Tales he proves to only care about money and he does not remain silent. The last character that is hypocritical is the nun. The nun is characterized as a hypocritical character because she also acts the complete opposite of what she should. The narrator states,”But she could carry a morsel up and keep/ The smallest drop from falling on her breast” (ln. 134-135). This shows how the nun tends to flirt with men and also wears clothes that are revealing. A nun is usually always wears clothes that cover their body and they are usually independent and aren’t looking for men. She does all of this while claiming to be a lady, and holding herself is higher regard than everyone else around her. By using the Lord to persuade the Christian customer, the pardoner can convince his customers to buy these fake relics. He makes them seem as if they are terrible people who sin if they don’t buy from him which forcefully causes them to buy from the greedy pardoner. The pardoner further lies about how he had relics that belonged to saints and even swears that they are real. Chaucer goes on about telling how several of the characters on the pilgrimage had questionable lifestyles yet the characters were taking part in a religious journey. Religion can only influence a moral character but does not make its followers untouchable to the imperfections found on earth. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer’s character, The Pardoner, is a church official who altered the peoples mind by cheating the people into believing any nonsense.
In The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the many characters, the Pardoner, takes advantage of people’s vices and ignorance, preaching against avarice, a sin which he does not feel guilty of committing. The Pardoner in The Canterbury Tales speaks of greed as “the root of all sin” and of himself as doing “Christ’s holy work”; although, he “practices” avarice himself he has no guilt of his thievery. The Pardoner deceives the towns people by falsifying professionalism by “speak[ing] a few works in Latin” and displaying his “bishop’s seal” on his “license” disguising himself as a trustworthy person.
Pardoner admit over as much story that he knows the correct strategy of extorting cash starting with individuals by preaching against the avarice from claiming cash. His skill lies in singing at the offertory to extract greatest cash starting with the individuals. Greed is those root from claiming shrewdness. “I preach nothing except for gain”(Line 105, Pardoner). Through the whole Pardoner’s tale he displays his love towards money and his greediness.
The Pardoner is extremely upfront regarding his greedy motives as seen in the quote “For myn entente is nat but for to wynne,” (117). The sole reason he is in this game is no other reason than to make money. The revelation of this goal results in an ironic situation as his job consists of preaching against greed, while the only reason of his employment is driven by his own greed. “To yeven hir pens; and namely, unto me” is also written as “With offered pence, the which pence come to me” (116). Through this line, the audience can see that the character of the Pardoner, himself, does not see his situation as particularly ironic, instead, to him, is what he has to do in order to support his lifestyle.
The character of the Pardoner in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is a complex one, full of contradictions and ambiguity. On one hand, he is described as a "noble ecclesiast" (Chaucer 691) and a skilled preacher, capable of moving his listeners to tears with his sermons. On the other hand, he is also a con artist, selling indulgences to people who believe that they can buy their way out of sin. This duality is central to the Pardoner's character, and it is the source of both his power and his corruption.

The Friar breaks the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and stability; therefore, he is the most corrupt pilgrim in The Canterbury Tales. The Friar is apart of the Clergy, or the religious or Church class. To be apart of the Church, you must take the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and stability. Chaucer is making fun of the clergy and saying that most of the members do not honor their vows.
“All they needed was a series of impressive looking letters and a confident manner in making the appeal” (Chaucer role of pardoner).The pardoner would go on to using the same tricks on everyone they saw near them. All they did was pull out the papers with the bishop's signature and use a confident manner to impress them. When the people of the villages found out about the scamming they would just ignore the pardoner's when they saw them. The pardoner’s were looked down upon the people all over the villages and all across the land. They would just simply ignore them or just keep on walking if they happened to come across a pardoner.
In the Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer utilizes the immoral character of the Pardoner to tell the utmost moral tale through satirical devices, presenting the true greed and hypocrisy that runs throughout the Church, regardless of it attempt to cover it. Chaucer introduces the hypocrisy within the Church through the characterization of the Pardoner, as he is explained to be a man with, “flattery and equal japes./He made the parson and the rest his apes” (“General Prologue” 607-608). “Japes” are tricks, alluding to the Pardoner’s relics, as they are fake; yet, the Pardoner still sells these relics to the Church members as genuine treasures. In “The Canterbury Tales” Chaucer illustrates the corruption of the church through the religious characters in both the tales and the prologue and their obsession with money. Illustrating the fact that medieval England, the church had a big impact on the lives of people due to them being able to “read” the bible. In many cases, this was uses to manipulate people into giving their money to church. Throughout the tales, people are shown to stand up to the church and beat them at their own game and this provides the ideal response to church corruption.
