In the novel Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls the protagonist, Billy is in a hunting contest. While, more and more hunters and their dogs are eliminated from the contest, they end up rooting for Billy. One of the men tells Billy, “I think almost every man in this camp is hoping you win it” (pg. 460). The author doesn’t say exactly why the men start to root for Billy. However, there are few things that I think probably contributed to the men rooting for Billy to win: 1) Billy and his dogs are the “underdogs” of the contest because Billy’s dogs are smaller and less experienced (pg. 460). 2) Billy is endearing; he is a sweet boy who really loves his dogs.
