The ability to trust others is a good quality to have, but too much trust can lead to betrayal which then can cause a change in someone. The dystopian novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman is about kids ages 13-18 trying to survive in a disloyal world from getting killed and stripped for body parts. In the novel The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, there is an alien invasion where all the aliens manipulate all the human’s fears and weaknesses to eventually kill them off. Both authors of the stories use character archetypes and symbolism to indicate the theme that people who have been betrayed in the past, tend to change as a person whether the change is good or bad.
First, in Unwind, Shusterman uses character archetypes to uniquely show how Lev has changed as a person after being betrayed by his mentors. In the beginning of the novel, the author chooses to portray Lev as an innocent character archetype. All his life Lev was naive and was brainwashed by his parents and pastor into believing that being a tithe was a good thing, and that the only way he could prove himself with god was by sacrificing himself. “ Lev knew he was a tithe from the time he was little…’you’re special,’ his parents had always told him. ‘Your life will be to serve god, and mankind.’ ”(ch. 21) But, later in the story when Pastor Dan (Lev’s mentor) tells Lev to run away and live right before arriving at the harvest camp, Lev reevaluates his life purpose of being a tithe and decides to help Risa and Connor from being
In the novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman, there are a lot of characters with a lot of different personalities. The main character Connor shows many different traits that make him above the others. When Connor has to choose over running away or giving up and getting unwound (killed) he choses to run. He gets pretty far until he ends up getting caught because he left his phone on. Although he may have been caught he wasn't captured and still had a trick up his sleeve.
The Greatest Read “My life is absolutely horrendous! I’ve never even met my own parents, my legal guardians don’t love me let alone want me, they remind me every day what a burden it was to take me in and how lucky I am, I’m bullied at school, and I sleep on a porch! Could it get any worse!?” are all phrases the main character, Leven Thumps, in Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo by Obert Skye, could have said… but did not. Which is part of why it is such a wonderful novel.
Mental Battles at Sea 227. The number of days Pi survived at sea with little food, little water and, even a Bengal Tiger..or so he thought. Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, describes the journey of a young boy named Piscine Patel, also known as Pi, whose father owns a zoo in India. When his family decides to sell the zoo and move to Canada, the freighter they travel in breaks down and sinks. Luckily, Pi gets on a life boat just in time but weirdly enough, with four zoo animals who were also in the freighter.
Shusterman shows the theme of Government Control through the Unwind society and Connor Lassiter’s trial of escape and fight towards the society. Connor Lassiter has very many different archetypes throughout the story. He is a hero because he saves Lev form being unwound, although that’s not how Lev views the situation. Lev views it as he is being kidnapped by a crazy lunatic, “... Connor looks into the eyes of this frightened kid,... he reaches through the window, pulls up the lock, and opens the door.” (Shusterman 19).
For example if a leader keeps failing at protecting their people then they might lose trust in them, people also lose trust when they get lied to.. An example of Odysseus’ men trusting him is in book ten when he asks a few of them to explore the land of the Laestrygones to see what type of people live there, ¨So I sent two of my company with an attendant to find out what sort of people the inhabitants were.¨ (Homer par. 8). This is an example of trust because Odysseus is trusting them that they will tell the truth and not run off with whoever lives off that
Religion was also used in order to keep Lev oblivious from what was going outside his religious circle. Being a tithe gave him a different understanding about the unwinding process. For him the idea of unwinding meant a sacrifice of himself for the greater good. This completely differs from the ideas that other characters had. However, the novel also showed the dependency of Lev and his family on the church.
Be Careful Who Trusts. Kevin Bochantin Write a six paragraph essay about detective and darkness archetypes found in batman nightwalker that show that you should be careful with who you trust Batman is one of the most well-known superheroes in popular culture, and the archetype of the detective is a significant part of his character. In the novel Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu, the detective archetype is explored in detail, alongside the archetype of darkness. These archetypes serve to show that it is essential to be careful with who you trust, as the truth is not always clear.
In life, many people seem to have problems with trust. These problems usually stem from prior developed issues. Daniel James Brown’s book, The Boys in the Boat, tells the story of Joseph “Joe” Harry Rantz who experiences struggles of abandonment and his ability to make the University of Washington rowing crew. To combat this, George Yeoman Pocock, the crew’s shipwright and mentor, gives Joe advice in order to overcome these obstacles in his life. Throughout Joe’s journey, he comes to learn that, in order to succeed one must learn to trust and depend on others.
And I am happy.” (34). Lev is preparing himself for the harvest knowing he is proud to be a tithe. Then there is an incident. “ ‘Please—you don't understand—you can't take me now, I'm being tithed.
After analyzing “On the Rainy Road” through an archetypal lens, it is clear that the symbols effectively indicate that going to war was a terrible decision. To start, Tim’s archetypal character showed that he was not emotionally ready to go to war. For instance, when Tim was trying to decide if he should go to war or run away to Canada, he had flashbacks described as follows, “I saw a seven-year-old boy in a white cowboy hat… I saw a sixteen-year-old kid decked out for his first prom, looking spiffy in a white tux,” (O’Brien). Tim imagined the colour white which is the archetypal colour for purity and innocence, showing he represents the divine child archetype.
If the power isn 't in your hands, the power of temptation is... The word power makes some think of leadership, positive role models, and mentors, but sometimes power is a want that can overcome the actions of an individual in a negative way. The novel Unwind is about two runaways, Risa and Connor, who are trying to escape being unwound or dismantled, as well as make the right decision that will defend what they stand for, and keep them alive. Similarly, in the novel UnWholly by Neal Shusterman, Connor and Risa have moved on from running away, and are now taking leadership in running the Graveyard, a safe place for runaway unwinds until they turn 17, and cannot be unwound. Both of the stories use symbolism and character archetype to imply the theme that wanting power of something you don 't have can be tempting, but might not always be the right thing.
This leads one to believe, Betrayal and hidden lies do affect everyone around you. Everything that happens is a chain reaction. Willy Loman's failure at the American dream is the first symbol of betrayal in "Death of a Salesman.
I feel as though most of the betrayal shown in this story wasn’t meant to actually happen the way it did. They felt like some stuff was meant to happen to have a better outcome. As they had said in the story about sacrifice. Some things might was bad for them to do but they did it just to try to please somebody else or better yet to please themselves. Quoted by
“For there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first.” This quote once said by Suzanne Collins, the arthur of the Hunger Games, relates to Sir Thomas Malory’s novel, Le Morte d’Arthur because many characters betray others in many different ways. More importantly, there is one thing in common, all of the betrayals had trust before there was betrayal. The love betrayal involves lovers having affairs or trying to kill their lover for power. Malory describes family betrayal as a member of the family who is betrayed by a relative of their family.
