The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that focuses on Jay Gatsby, and his attempt to regain a relationship that was left in the past with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby is an ambiguous character. Gatsby had many great qualities, such as being a dreamer, determined, devoted and wealthy. On the other hand, Gatsby possesses many flaws, a few being dishonest, possessive, naive, and living off an idea from the past. His inability to let go of the past and move on ultimately leads to chaos and reveals that Gatsby can not process the passage of time.

Gatsby, otherwise known as Jay Gatz, was an unusual man- dressed up in a pink suit and making his way to the top (seemingly) like it was nothing. We could talk about how unusual Gatsby’s tendencies and personality was for days, as it’s quite the controversial topic. But instead, we’ll touch upon Fitzgerald 's choices in The Great Gatsby that helped make Gatsby into the character he was. One of the major choices was Fitzgerald’s emphasis on aging and decaying, which helped show that while the world aged and changed, Jay Gatz didn’t.

Gatsby’s dreams and aspirations in life are rather interesting and amazing as he goes about his life in the book. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald helps highlight the social, moral, and political issue that were very present during the 1920’s and today. Gatsby is the focus of the book as before the book began, he was an ex-soldier who came to wealth by some rather illegal ways. Daisy a married woman is his person of interest, who was his ex-lover 5 years before the book started. Gatsby’s actions, and words demonstrate a clear obsession with Daisy that seems to have no end.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby main character, Jay Gatsby develops in many ways. Jay Gatsby’s mysteriousness, loving nature towards others, and boldness towards other changes at a wide span throughout the book. All of these lead to his death by gunshot. All of these areas that Gatsby changes in make Tom more suspicious of him. He then tells his former lover’s husband that Gatsby killed his wife because Tom is upset with Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby is an American novel written by Scott Fitzgerald. On the surface, the book revolves around the concept of romance, the love between two individuals. However, the novel incorporates less of a romantic scope and rather focuses on the theme of the American Dream in the 1920s. Fitzgerald depicts the 1920’s as an era of decline in moral values. The strong desire for luxurious pleasure and money ultimately corrupts the American dream which was originally about individualism.

The story also focuses on Jay Gatsby. Nick’s affluent neighbor who often throws large parties at his mansion. The Great Gatsby is based on the idea of the American Dream; it is a belief that with sufficient work ethic, one can accomplish most, if not all of their goals.

This draws attention to the readers that question if Jay Gatsby is "Great". Despite the uselessness of his beginnings, Gatsby is great due to the intensity of his will. Although, Gatsby is a person whose false love, materialism, and egotism led him to the tragic end.

Jay Gatsby, the title character of the novel “The Great Gatsby” is a man that can not seem to live without the love of his life. Trying to win Daisy over consumes Gatsby’s life as he tries to become the person he thinks she would approve of. What most readers do not realize is that Jay Gatsby’s character mirrors many personality traits and concerns that the author of novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald, had. In fact, Gatsby and Fitzgerald are similar in that they both had a girl they wanted to win over, took a strong stance on alcohol, and ironically both had similar funerals, also, both people also symbolize the American dream.

For multiple reasons The Great Gatsby impacted my life. With personal issues and a previous appreciation for the theatrical version of the story, I was able to connect with the novel on a much deeper level than most. Through Gatsby’s persistence and passion, I was taught how important it is to care enough and pursue everything, even your craziest dream. Also, Jay’s tragedy revealed to me when a person should realize that maybe it is better to draw a line and move on in life even if it hurts. Overall, I am very thankful for the opportunity to read the book and learn the lessons I did.

The deception of the characters in Fitzgerald’s novel signifies the emptiness and artificial lifestyle of people in the 1920s. From a young age, Gatsby has never accepted the life he was born into, always seeking a way to participate in the abstract customs of the rich, resulting in his lies to convince Daisy as well of others of his rich background. Gatsby is presented as a character that has not been able to transition his life to the present day time period, keeping his eyes shut from the realities of his dreams, "Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!"(Fitzgerald 116). In Gatsby’s attempt to change all the features he was born with, including his name, James Gatz, he fails to realize that his dreams are not worthy of him and he will never be able to achieve them.

The eponymous character was born the day he met Dan Cody and invented himself a new life. Ultimately, Gatsby created and fabricated his own ideal ‘identity’ to meet his expectations: “The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his platonic conception of himself […] so he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year- old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end.” Two identities therefore arise: Jay Gatsby and James Gatz. Yet one can almost see the threads of James Gatz behind the Gatsby facade. With Daisy, Gatsby loses the carefully constructed identity: he reverts to the young soul seeking for his place in the world, with “a touch of panic” in his voice when he realises that Daisy has “slipped away [and become something] no longer tangible”.

This moment he changed his name to James Gatsby. This was an important part of Gatsby’s life, it was the time period where his past was erased and he received a new identity. Nick describes Gatsby as “….Jay Gatsby…sprang from his platonic conception of himself”(Fitzgerald, 104). Nick tries to show how James Gatz has modeled himself after “Jay Gatsby”, which is a man that Gatsby has created for himself.

The Great Gatsby is a book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story follows Nick, the protagonist, as he moves to New York City and starts his new life there. Throughout the book, the reader meets an abundance of horrible characters like Daisy, a self-absorbed and careless beauty, Tom, a brutal and unmoral man, and Gatsby, an ignorant and mysterious fool who wasted his life chasing a hopeless dream. Baz Luhrmann and Woody Allen are just two people of many who have recreated The Great Gatsby or dedicated a homage to it, both proving effective representations of the film.

I believe the first time I read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was when I was in high school. The novel was never assigned or studied in any of my English classes and so, out of sheer curiosity because I knew it was considered a literary masterpiece, I decided to read it for my own pleasure. The only information I had about Gatsby was that it was set during the 1920s and that it was an American classic.
